Why exactly do beardies sometimes bask with their mouths open? Is there something wrong or just enjoying the heat. When I walk over he immediately stops though.

It's a way for your beardie to regulate its body temperature. He can't sweat so he opens his mouth to let off excess heat. fascinating creatures our beardies

It is called mouth gaping. Bearded dragons are ectotherms so they thermoregulate by opening their mouths. Crocodiles and even dinosaurs are thought to have done the same thing. It cools them.

I think my lizards are just too lazy to move to a cooler spot so they just sit there baking and gaping. :D
