Hi, is it necessary to have that aluminum around the uv. I have a reptisun tube without that aluminum on it, I just have a regular ffixture. Is that ok or I have to put some kind of "hood" around it?
Thanks
No, you don't have to have a reflector on your light, but it will definitely help. Studies show that the use of a reflector can pretty much double the output of a UVB light. http://www.uvguide.co.uk/fluorescenttubereflectortests.htm
Adding one is very easy and cheap. Go to the hardware store and get a piece of round duct pipe. This is the kind used for stove vent hoods. Cut it in half lengthwise, fold over all the sharp edges, and attach it to your fixture. I used this 2 foot bit of duct pipe for my 4 foot fixture. It really helps and cost like $3.
