Overdose of Albon...help!!!

I just realized that the vet gave my 64 g beardie enough Albon for a 1 pound dragon. He received 1 mill on Monday, .5 mills on Tuesday and Wednesday. What do I do?

Oh my....are you sure ? Have you contacted your vet + verified this, if not call them to see what if anything needs to be done. You can also send a p.m. to Drache613 [ Tracie ] who knows a good deal about meds. + dosing. How is the dragon acting ? Hopefully he'll be O.K !

I made an appointment with a local Banfield Hospital that operates out of PetSmart and was told I would be seeing a reptile vet. When I got there, they had scheduled me on the wrong day, so it wasn't an exotic vet. She did a float and found coccidia (now I'm wondering if it was just a normal amount of coccidia not even worth treating), then gave Drago 1 ml of Albon and sent me home with five syringes of .5 ml's to give on the subsequent days. I was looking over the paperwork this morning and noticed they had his weight as 1.1 pounds, and it should be .1 pounds!!! He was eating less than normal yesterday, but with a normal bowel movement. This morning, he didn't come out of his cave, so I took him out, loved on him a bit, then put him on his basking rock. I'm sure he feels terrible. I called the vet's office and they're going to get back with me, but their reptile vet won't be in the office for weeks.

Be sure to keep all your paperwork and the syringes that you have in case your dragon has any problems, you will want compensation. For now, discontinue the meds. and try to offer water orally as much as you can to flush out his system.If there is another qualified reptile vet in your area you might call + explain your problem and if there's anything you need to do. But for now he's just kind of lethargic ? Have you offered any food ?

He ate about 8 small dubias yesterday (normally is probably 30), but I didn't offer food this morning before leaving for work since he was still cool and wanting to be under his rock. I'll go home at lunch and check on him and offer some food. He does just appear lethargic. Yesterday I bathed him and will continue to do this daily as well as getting as much water in him with a syringe. The vet is supposed to call me back this morning, but I will definitely call a more qualified vet if I need to. I sent Tracy a private message as well. Thanks so much for the quick response. I'm feeling quite on edge and helpless at this point.

Hopefully since it was only for a couple of days he will be O.K . Being that he ate yesterday, that's a good sign....try not to worry too much.

Wow, that was quite a mistake. We all know how rough Albon is on them and too high of a dosage makes it even worse. Very surprised that he ate. Would be a good idea to give a probiotic in case the Albon upsets his stomach, wouldn't want him to vomit or have diarrhea. Do you have Benebac or Acidophilus on hand? If not, you could even give a fruit flavored SOY (non-dairy) yogurt.

Poor guy, that is quite an overload.
Since he is eating, I agree, that is a good sign right now. Keep him a little warmer overnight, just to help his body assimilate & metabolize it more effectively.
I hope he is doing better!

Thanks everyone. He was acting very normal today...he ate less than normal, but had a bowel movement and was very alert and moving around normally. Does anyone have a recommendation as to whether I should give the last three doses of his Albon (the correct dosage, of course)?

I ordered probiotic online as soon as he was diagnosed with coccidia. Sure hoping it comes in tomorrow.

Hello,

Drago looks very colorful! I am glad that he seems to be getting back to normal.
Hopefully the probiotic will help out his appetite & he will start eating his usual amount soon.
When did he get the most recent dose? I would give him at least a week off, then you could give a few more appropriate doses, if you feel it is needed.

Ok, that is fairly recently. Maybe you should wait until monday to give anymore, just to be sure his system has cleared out pretty well, too. How is he doing, has he eaten anything?

Thanks, Tracie. Drago is acting 100% normal now (other than the original issue of walking sometimes on the back of his hands). He is eating well and bowel movements are normal. I'll plan to give the last three doses starting Monday. What dose of Albon would a 64 gram beardie need?

What is the strength of the Albon that you have? I can dose him if you need.
I am glad Drago is doing well. Hopefully he is feeling better, too.
