Hey Lance, or anyone else willing to answer.

I have run out of water crystals, and it got me thinking about other ways to give water.
I saw a guide for cricket care that said get a shallow dish and fill it with clean gravel. Then fill it with water tell the water reaches the tip of the gravel.

Do any of you think this is ok (obviously not ideal) but do you think something like this would work, or would it cause too much drowning.

It would work for the adults but I would worry about the babies. Give it a try and see if it works. You can also fill a shallow dish and fill it with cotton balls.

Yeah, I figured it would be a just go and try it. I will try it overnight and check in the morning for casualties. :)()
Will report back here though.

I think im' going to stay away from the cottonballs. Seems like it would grow mold too fast.

Thanks Lance.

ok ... I'm sure this has probably been covered in this thread(and I have read this whole thread at one point), but I can't remeber everything.

I have an 18 Gal. rubbermaid tote and another that's larger, what size colony would comfortably fit in the 18G tote? At some point I'll probably be using the larger one.

Thanks

Well, I thought I had gravel laying around but I didn't lol. So at this point my water crystals will already be here soon enough so I guess I won't be posting my results with my colony. Although I still might try.

I had 200 female and 40 male in my 18, and they were fine :) *I* did not care for it b/c it was hard to get the food and water crystals etc. in the empty space. For me anyway. I only had (and still only use) 4 egg crates. They just stay piled together so the outside crate is nearly empty...except most of my females like to lay their eggs on that side, likely b/c it is less crowded?

I did put them into a 30 gallon after about a month and I love it much more. There is plenty of room for food and water stuff and I notice they hide under that stuff more. I honestly did not see much of a difference in babies b/c of the size, I started seeing more when I put them in a closet that is always dark and more quiet.

You will love having feeders 24/7/365!!

I just wanted to thank everyone on this post, because if it wasn't for these pictures and discussion of the egg sack, I probably would have thrown out the female I saw today with half an egg sack protruding out her backside. It was the first time since I got them that I saw one like that, and it's both disturbing and encouraging (an odd combination of feelings I'll admit).

LOL....wait until you see the white coming out!

Somehow a female got loose...I think she hitched a ride on my son's sleeve but by the time I saw her she was on her back dead. I saw that she was all full of this white stuff and thought she had...well, something really wrong, sick.

So...being as my son is 12yo...I did what I should...I squeezed her a bit so we could see this *puss* and ask about it on here! LOLOL

It was when I squeezed her (ok, sorry for the graphic pic!not) that I realized what it really was b/c it just SHOT out of her, it did not *mush* out of her. I felt terrible. But she really was dead. Never had an adult out any other time. We don't wear long sleeves when dealing with the bin now

It really is a very cool thing to see because you know there are going to be more baby dubias!! I never ever regret starting a colony!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
