Personally I can't say if I care or not, WHEN you get bit by a cayman\ croc w\e, it's your fault and you deserve it. Same with any animal, WHEN it bites you remember you're the one who wanted it so deal with it.

Do I want a large lizard like a croc or what ever else they come as, no. But I won't say you don't have a right to own one if you want to. Just be sure that you intend to keep it for the rest of it's life as a lot of people decide after a while that they don't want it and give let it out in the wild which some have done for beardies and captive beardies don't survive well in the wild. I've read a few threads on here about how beardies have ended up in bad shape just because someone left them in their back yard and moved away.

I think that everyone keeps taking personal offense to what I am saying. So allow me to take another shot at it.

These animals are dangerous and should not be available on the market for just anyone to have access to. You don't want someone to start an alligator fighting trade much like they did to the pit bulls. There are selfish people who just want to make money off of everything and will do unbelievable acts with their pets. Alligators/Caimans are not going to do a favor to the reptile community if they cause a problem.

If they are so readily available and not to mention CHEAP, then honestly, what do you think the possibilities are?

I still think that a basement is equivalent to a 10 gallon tank for a beardie. You can't just handle it and they live 50-80 years. The chances of these guys having an early death is inevitable.

If you have boocoo bucks and plenty of room with the skills of a crocodile hunter, have one. Heck, have 3. I still think that you should have a license... permit... something to have a natural born killer.

Brian, while anaconda/alligator deaths are rare because they don't hunt humans, I imagine they wouldn't have to hunt you if you are going down to your basement to view/poke at them to tape their mouths up for whatever reason.

People get beardies and have NO idea how to care for them. If you don't believe me, just look at this forum. Might I remind you that most places that allow you to buy a beardie also have books on how to care for them within arms distance. STILL, you have oblivious people asking what shedding is and such.

I think that anyone who has any love or desire for a specific species would not want them subjected to people who would get them and allow them to have a bad name. They are just too potentially dangerous for anyone.

Allow me to also add that people who don't have basements also have the option of keeping them in their yard. I know anyone who has had a dog or cat has had an accident and they got off their leash, hopped the fence, ran out of the front door... I can tell you, that from my experience of living in Louisiana... those things will eat Fifi or Bruno in a heartbeat.

You can speak of proper care, but you can not speak for anyone who comes across those sites. The second site sells American Alligators for $75.00 with free shipping. COME ON!

Chelly, I fear you're wasting your time. This debate sounds very much like other debates. "If I can't have my arsenal of sniper rifles and cannons and tanks then they're coming for your handgun next!" "If I can't take my pet lion to the local off-leash park they'll be coming for your shih tzu next!" The slippery slope argument is one of the common fallacies for a reason.

I agree. Common sense isn't so common.

You can think its a lack of Common Sense all you want but here is what I wish to respond with.

First off the comparrison of a lion being taken to a dog is foolish at its best just have to point that one out.

As to the large reptile deal. Comparing the ownership of any large constrictor to that of a alligotor or croc is downright unintelligent at best. And on top of that, its not a slippery slope to say that once the government is able to control one facit of the reptile trade that all will follow.

Let say that a law finally gets passed saying owning a gator without a license/permit/or being a zoo is a federal crime ok. Now a year later some ***** slips while handling his croc monitor now people start pushing to have those outlawed, and with the way politicians work all large varanids would be added to that list. Then you have places like New York that ban all constrictors no matter their size or home country. Few years further down the line the US is following suit of state laws and banning all constrictors, then all lizards, and lets not forget turtles cause they cause salmonilla and then comes tortoises cause they are like turtles and there went the reptilian pet hobby, all because someone wants to complain about people having caimons and/or crocs as pets. Im sorry but it does much more harm than good to try and make waves about having 1 species regulated cause it opens the door to all species.

Weather or not you think I am using common sense is of no consequence to me in the least. If you pay attention to the state of our hobby and how lawmakers are doing everything they can to pull our ability to own reptiles you would understand where i am coming from with my statements.

Oh and by the way (just to add fodder to your post) I am pro guns and pro choice and pro gay rights and pro big military and pro small government. So i fall right into your "lack of common sense" group.

i agree, on the sites selling cheap, so anybody can order, though i buy at expos so i yea, this is not in the gators favor, but at least if a inexperianced owner gets one, ti will likely die before it gets person eating age, still a no-wine case but yea

Brian,

You are missing my point, but that is to be expected. Brian, I will not have my intelligence insulted because I don't think it makes sense to have owning an alligator at liberty to some goon with money and a computer to buy it from.

All reptiles are welcome to require a license to obtain. Maybe so many careless buyers will have initiative to at least learn about them before they buy them.

This means drug addicts, people with mental disabilities and other issues can obtain these animals. You can't tell me that these fools can have an alligator. When they can't take it, another freak will take it and so forth until the alligator ends up dead or killing someone. I'm not speaking of reputable people, but the fact that they are as easy to obtain and cheaper than a puppy.

right cause Im sure the first thing on joe crackhead's mind is spending money on anything other than drugs. When any of you come up with a valid and intelligent argument for this I will sit back and read it and think it over but until you have an argument that would be able to equal a solution to what you see as a "problem" I will be standing by my posts. And ps your intelligence was not insulted it was questioned. Oh well

Crackheads have never bought and fought pit bulls? Someone needs to guard the crack. My arguments have been feasable. You on the other hand are being stubborn and one-sided. As normal. I'm done with you, Brian.

Once again comparing to very different animals. Pit bulls are easy to steal or trade for drugs. You dont find many guys on the side of the streat saying "Hey man want my gaurd gator"
Im not being hardheaded or whatever you want to say. Im just showing the large gaping holes in the comments yall are making on this.

Same as anacondas, They wont strike as soon as you put your hand in, i think most of these people are ignorant.i've kept snakes, ball pythons, blood pythons, ted tail boas, reticulated pythons, and even one anaconda and im only 15! Just because the media say's that they are "natural born killers" they're not, thats being biased : Dont say oohh anacondas, and retics are dangerous when you've never kept one before. Shure they get heavy and need some adult supervision, but i have never been bit by them (just my ball python wich is the smallest of the constrictors 4-6 ft).

I agree with you spyder 79. I don't really want crocs out there for people to have as pets, but I wouldn't say they can't. The way the politicians do things is they chip away at our freedoms and before you know it, we don't have any. Just look at the 'political correctness' garbage. You can't say anything much any more because you might offend someone. This means our freedom of speech has already been diminished.

BTW: I like the warning in your sig line. It makes me laugh every time I read it.

I'm going to ask you the same thing I ask everyone who complains about "political correctness" (I call it just being a decent human being, but whatever).

1. What exactly is it that you want to say that you now "can't" because someone might get offended?
2. Can you show me any law that has been passed by the US government curtailing your freedom of speech in the name of political correctness? What's the penalty for saying something that might offend someone?
