swollen/peeling/covered nose on juvie

Hello. Just two days ago, me and my boyfriend d bought a beardie from pet smart. Noticed today his right nostril was peeling and looked kinda swollen. What could it be and how do we treat it? Thank you xo

posted some photos hope it helps. looking at him right now, and he's pretty sleepy, all the time it seems. not sure if it's just the stress of moving from pet store to new home or what. Eats great though. He is such a pig. But the nostril almost seems to be peeling on the one side now that I have a good look at it. Could he be getting ready to shed? Also one more question, the top of his head between both eyes is kind of grey...normal or is it signs of shed?

Yes, that nostril has a wee small wound on it but is also shedding.....when the nostril sheds it has a small " ring-shaped" patch of skin that comes off. The small grey areas are generally little scars [ I know from raising my own babies ] that can come from a bite of a clutchmate and takes a few sheds to disappear or fade , although sometimes it doesn't completely disappear. He will probably be fine, but you can put the very tiniest dab of either Neosporin or raw honey on it [ from a health food store ] . The raw honey is a natural antimicrobial + is good on all wounds. But be sure to use just a dab, you don't want to cover both nostrils, just the one. Also if you use honey, be positive that there are no loose crickets after feeding him, they would go for the face , being attracted to the honey.

It's great that he's eating well, always a good sign especially for a new baby. Make sure the bugs are no bigger than the space between his eyes or he could get impacted. Can you list the exact brand + type of lights you use to be sure his lethargy is not caused by improper lights ? Pet stores are notorious for selling wrong UVB bulbs.

Those kits don't come with the right lighting for a beardie. You can use the basking light it came with, but you want to switch out the UV light for either a Reptisun 10.0 or an Arcadia 12.0 tube bulb. It needs to be the long tube not the compact coil. You can get the Reptisun from Petsmart, zoomed makes it.
What substrate was with it? Those kits either come with carpet or sand. The carpet is fine but sand can cause a tiny baby to become impacted. They're such messy eaters, like all babies, they can swallow it, then it clumps together in their stomachs and gets stuck.

Came with carpet! We won't be using anything but the carpet as I've heard horror stories about other stuff. And I was concerned about the lighting and was looking at getting new bulbs for it anyway as I noticed the temp wasn't where I wanted it to be

Good that it came with carpet, and once he gets bigger and you can't keep it clean very easily you can go with non adhesive shelf liner, easier to clean.

You will do well to switch the UVB bulb [ the long tube ] to one of the ones that Sedjet mentioned. The Reptisun 10.0 and the Arcadia 12 % are the best , the Reptiglo 10.0 is good as well. Don't get any tube bulb that is less than a 10.0 You may also want to check to see that the long fixture doesn't have a plastic shield, that blocks the UVB so if it's there you can take it off.

For the heat bulbs you can actually use old fashioned incandescent bulbs or halogen.
