Kookie will soon be moving from his 20 gal. long to the 40 gal. breeder. I'm currently using the ReptiSun 10 18" tube. Would it be best if I get an MVB for the new larger tank? And if so, what wattage?
Either will do nicely, actually. That said, we opted to upgrade to a MVB when we went to a 40 gallon, and we are really liking it. 100w T-rex. Our beardie, (due to a rough start with a compact light), was struggling with growth. We changed it out while in her smaller tank, for a ReptiSun 5.0, which was ok, certainly an improvement, and helping her back onto her feet, but the MVB, in the new tank, has been quite amazing, I must say. I've never seen her more energetic, full of appetite, and she basks so many hours a day, it's like she's standing in worship (you know, when they get up on their front legs and lift their head to the bulb?). It's been a wonderful experience so far, and it's only been two+ weeks. The bulb heats the tank nicely, with help from a 45w flood on the cool side (won't be needed for spring and summer, I don't think), and all in all we're very happy with the arrangement. Aside from the strong UVB emissions that are making beardie awfully happy, I like the fact of only changing the bulb once per year, instead of twice, and money comes out about about the same. In addition, the tank set up just feels more simple and streamlined, and being OCD, this is very helpful to me, personally.
Here are a couple of threads I found helpful (inspiring?) in making my decision:
