She's sleeping. Whew. I thought for sure she wouldn't sleep tonight because of the pain. But she's snuggled on top of my t-shirts with her eyes closed and limbs tucked close to her body. By next week she'll probably be sleeping with me.

I have had to throw out her heat rock (I had nothing else to do with it) and thermometer (the buttons wouldn't push, it was so filthy and sand-caked), so I'm adding thermometer to my nonexistant list. My stepmother said that she needs bleach anyway, we'll see if we can bleach the water dish out and get rid of the algae. Yucky.

One day of recovery down.... many more to go. At least I know she isn't impacted, and that she likes collard greens. Do you guys think I could feed her some mango, or should I wait for the sores to heal? Mango is kind of squishy....

I'm finally relaxing. She'll be okay. Finally. *big sigh*

Jacqui- Looks like you have had some great help since you first posted. I'm glad she is adjusting. Poor thing has had quite a day. Now for you- Deep breaths, in- out, in-out there, feel better? You'll do fine, after all you've been dubbed a beardie whisperer. Love that term BTW. Though I think I'd say dragon whisperer, it just sounds cooler. (Is that a word, "cooler"?)
Neat that your dad's a cop. My DH is too. Though if he is loaded, they must pay better in TX than in TN!

You might want to go a little easy on us "country bumpkins" We aren't all dumb. Most of us can tell when a water dish is dirty and know about getting rid of poop. An ***** is an *****, country, city makes no difference. :banghead: :angry5: If he cared for his livestock like that he would be in big trouble. That is if he were caught. I can't stand people who don't have the sence it takes to keep an animal clean. All animals need a clean place to sleep and fresh clean water. :banghead: I do hope he does better with the baby.

Sleep well young Dragon whisperer. You will win her over and heal her. Time will be your best friend in the process. Prayers for you and Gem.

Teehee "Dragon Whisperer". That sounds cool. :D

OK, seriously, I need to go to bed now. I've been saying that for the past hour.

Jacqui, I am sure you will have her happy and healthy in no time!

And completely off topic, Sandy, I have to ask, I see people use DH but I do not know what it stands for. I can usually tell the person is talking about their spouse. I have wondered for a long time, finally had to ask.

In the snake world, DH stands for "definite het", but I doubt that's what Sandy is referring to.

Don't be embarrassed, I had to ask too. I guess us old folks are a bit out of touch. The D stands for dear the H for husband. There is also DS, DD and DW, for son, daughter and wife. I guess it is used in texting. I don't do that. Can't push all those tiny buttons right. I'd rather just call. Or wait for a larger keyboard!

Ahhh, I see! my best guess (and only a sarcastic one at that) was dumb husband!
(not calling your husband dumb, just in general, that is what I had made up in my mind!)

Good heavens! all this stuff happening in one day. I missed all this when I took a nap after work. I couldn't function without one. Good for you Jacqui! I don't envy you all the work it will take to get her healthy! At least is summer now so you don't have to worry about work.

Lori

I have another question, is this the beardie you talked about maybe getting a couple of weeks ago, just before you got momo? Isn't it good to have 2 beardies? I'm just glad my husband is home during the day to feed and give our girls real sunshine every day, when it's warm and sunny enough, that is!

"DH" stands for "dear husband" or "darling husband"

Jacqui, I was almost in tears reading your first post about Gem and seeing her pics. I think I even held my breath for a few of them. You truly are an angel for rescuing her from that horrid owner/place.

You had already received all of the expert advice on how to treat her wounds, so I won't add more. What I do want to suggest is that you might want to section off a portion of her viv, just until she's used to her surroundings and not so stressed. All that room might scare her, not giving her a secluded feeling. Maybe you could cut up a cardboard box for her to hide in until you back in PA.

Could the 'sore' on her back foot be a callus or retained shed? Is it squishy or hard?
I'm sure Gem was dehydrated, and the two baths you gave her helped her perk up physically and mentally - and it reduced the swelling in her mouth.

How much longer will you be in Austin? If it'll be a week or longer, you might want to limit Gem's exposure to the outside world. Wouldn't want her to get used to her current environment then have to start all over again. Just trying to limit the stress level.

See if your stepmom could find this in the stores for Gem, it'll be perfect for her:

Alright, hijackers, enough about DH. I always thought it was 'Deh Husband' as in LOL Beardie talk. Oh well.

Lori (I almost wrote Lord, woops): No, this is a totally different one. The Rescue Center never replied to my email about the one you're referring to.... grumble grumble....

Gina: (Thanks). The thing is, she's used to the viv she came in. She walks from side to side and basks and stuff, she knows every nook and corner of that viv. I think if I did section it off, she'd be more stressed because she can't walk to the other side. Plus, it's quite skinny, hardly wide enough for her to fit her large self. I'd be claustrophobic, I don't know if beardies can be.

I have no idea how long I'll be here. Until the end of July at the most, but I want to go home, as I'm not having the best time, and I don't know whether or not my dad will let me go home early.

About the foot. I can't tell you how it feels, as she never lets me touch it. She jerks it away whenever I go to touch it. Gem did try to run away from me, and I noticed that she walked on the lump rather than her foot. Could this be a callus from her walking on her heel so much? Perhaps she injured her foot?

It's funny, I bought that exact babyfood, only in a little plastic box.... I always use Gerber.

Okay, enough stalling, here are more pics.

Her mouth sores:

IMG_0015.jpg

They seem to be more red than pink today, but not as swollen.

Her tongue (if you can see....)

IMG_0013.jpg

It's way less yellow than yesterday. Could it have been dehydration?

She's hissing at me now. She wasn't yesterday, today she is. She's also hobbling around. She doesn't walk normally, it's like a hobble/limp kind of walk.

I did get babyfood into her. She liked it and tried to eat the syringe. Then she freaked out when I tried to clean her beard.

Jacqui

EDIT: Also waiting for a comment on the Hibiclens.

From what I can see from the pics, the lump on her heel doesn't seem to be a callus, but a sore. She probably either banged on it sometime ago. How about using a Q-tip instead of your finger to test the hardness of the wound?

Ouch! The mouth sores look incredibly painful. Does she rub it at all? Is that the only one or are there more elsewhere? I have to wonder if it could be due to dehydration, if it's primarily to the lip area.

I guess I missed the part where you told us that you got her viv as well. My bad. In that case, forget what I said and keep things the way she remembers them to be.

As for the yellowing of the tip of Gem's tongue, I'm not so sure. One of my former beardies also had some yellowing at the tip, but not quite that prominent. (I'll do some searching to see if that's normal or not)

Jacqui, I'm sure she'll start to improve for you real soon. Don't be intimidated by her hissing -- that's just her expressing her annoyance to all that you'd done to/for her. Perfectly normal.

*hugs*

Wow Jacqui!
I completely missed this post until now, but I wanted to say good luck and congratulations.
Also, no one mentioned this yet, but make sure that you are washing your hands and even changing your clothes in between handling your dragons. It is very likely as you suspect that Gem has parasites and some of them, from my understanding, can attach to your clothing then be passed from dragon to dragon. I know this is a pain and more laundry, but it's better than having two sick babies. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong and parasited cannot travel on human clothing).

Gina: Yeah, she's not very impressed with me. She doesn't rub the sores at all, but she does occasionally open her mouth a bit, probably to get the pressure off of them. She has two, on either side of her mouth, right across from each other.

Sara: I've been careful not to handle MoMo since I got Gem. Except for the one time when my brother let him out.... anyway, I don't want ANYTHING from Gem transferred to MoMo, so I haven't been handling him.

Jacqui

P.S. Got an estimate for a nearby vet, he said it would only be around two hundred bucks to take her in and get her a fecal, dewormed, antibiotics on the sores, calcium injections, X-rays, and her foot checked out. I guess that's not too bad, but then again, I've never been to a vet....

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
