Hey Jacqui, good job in rescuing Gem. She looks like a real sweetie. Considering all the things she has been lacking, she really doesn't look so bad. Great that you're giving baths and that she just took a big poop for you.

I would go real easy on the protein for at least 4 or 5 days because you don't want to over tax her system, you have to be careful of her liver & kidneys. So, get some more baby food squash and use more of that to a smaller portion of chicken or turkey baby food. Also get some Betadine from the drug store and add enough of that to her bath water so that it looks like weak tea. Be sure to put her in plain water first in case she wants to drink as she shouldn't ingest any of the Betadine. Also, do you have any triple antibiotic on hand like Neosporin or Bacitracin? After the Betadine soak, blot her dry and put some of that cream on the sore areas. Be sure to let it sink in a little before putting her back under the basking light.

Try not to let either of them view each other, don't want to stress any of them out right now, they are both trying to adjust to all the changes, especially Gem, ok?

Also, getting some soy yogurt may help her mouth sores too. Stoneyfield makes some great soy yogurt that you can read about here: http://www.stonyfield.com/ourproducts/OSoy-SoyYogurt.cfm

Let's see what you have written down that you need to get so far to make sure you're not leaving anything out, ok?

Honestly, I have no idea what I need, so I have nothing written down. I've used Stonyfield yogurt before when Reggie had parasites and was on Panacur. I used the blueberry stuff. He didn't like it much, but then again, he didn't like anything edible that didn't move much.

The pictures do her justice. She looks worse in real life. She's quite heavy, but she's letting me hold her now. :D She had been eating protein, just not good protein. She was having bugs, but they were from outside. So she has been eating. Just not good stuff. I will have to pick up babyfood. She doesn't seem to like drinking water. I've also had experience with Betadine for Reggie's amputated tail.

The sores are in her mouth. I don't think she should ingest Neosporin, should she? I could put it on her foot, but it looks like it's a big swollen mass of something. It looks like it's poppable. Obviously I am not going to pop it. Just saying.

Yeah, my brother (he's two) let MoMo out.... I found him trying to get into Gem's viv.... and Gem trying to eat MoMo.... I have to find a new lock for MoMo's enclosure or he'll let MoMo in to play with Gem. I'll do that now....

Alright. Well, it's about MoMo's bedtime. He just went through a huge shed, very tiring, you know. I'll have to put him to bed now....

Yes, definitely put a lock on the tank, otherwise something terrible could happen.

No, you don't want to use the Neosporin in her mouth, but on her outer sores instead. The soy yogurt would be for her sores in her mouth. Perhaps you can get a different flavor instead of blueberry like maybe raspberry.

I know she was eating protein, but hard to say how much. Wax worms are very fatty so they may be too much on her system. You're better off with the baby food slurry and feeding that, will give her sores a rest.

Good that you know all about the Betadine. Can you try to get a picture of the blister type area on her foot so we can take a look at it?

Hello Jacqui,

Well, Gem is a beautiful girl, poor thing. She definitely did not get good care previously.
Can you post another picture of her foot, a closeup? Is it swollen?
The end of the tongue should just be a greyish to whitish color. How yellow is it, & it just the tip of the tongue of more than just the tip? Does it look like it is coated a little bit on the last quarter of her tongue?
Go very slowly with the protein because she has been so dehydrated for so long. Her kidneys wont be able to handle processing the protein.
The betadine should be good for any wounds. It can be used for mouth wounds as long as it is diluted really well. No, she should not ingest any neosporin or polysporin. You could getg some novalsan cream & that is pretty safe, used very sparingly for mouth sores.
You can get some bee pollen & brewer's yeast to help with her immune system. Just mix it in with the greens slurry daily for her.
You have the liquid calcium? What is her weight, do you know?
What an angel you are for adopting her. :love5:

Let's see here... If I move the tv and the pc into the bedroom and living room, there is room for a Jacqui and two dragons, and a bed and dresser. Desk isn't moving, so you'll have room for that. Oh, and you might wanna tell your dad, that you are thinking about moving to Savannah for a year or two ;). Okay so that isn't feasible, but it is a nice thought !
Keep up the good work ! I want to see a Gem smile !
Janie.

My Mom wants to know if there's room for her, too. :laughing6: She wants to go to Savannah.

I'll see if I can get my dad to get another picture of her foot, he's the camera guy. I can't get it to focus for me ever....

It's a light yellow, kind of like mustard. Yuck. Mustard. As suggested before, could this be from the carrots? The guy who owned her said that was the "Only vegetable she would ever eat". I beg to differ, she's been picking at collards.

I have no protein to feed her except hornworms that are way too big, and I'ma give those to the chickens because I have nothing else to do with them. So no worries for protein. Hornworms scare me, by the way.

I think the sores in her mouth are shrinking! Her lip appears to be less raised up on the left side. I will get some bee pollen/brewer's yeast and mix it with her babyfood. I'm gonna make a run real quick for babyfood and betadine and novalsan, plus the pollen/yeast.

I have liquid calcium, yes, as Reggie never accepted powdered calcium. I have no idea what she weighs, but dang, is she heavy!!! I'm estimating at least 300 grams. She's not underweight, I can tell you that!

She's keeping me busy! She's full of pleasant surprises. I'll check on her tongue tomorrow and let you know how it looks, I don't want to stress her anymore tonight.

Hello Jacqui,

Is the foot swollen or just discolored? Thanks for trying to get another picture for me. I appreciate it.
No, the discoloration on the foot should not be from the carrots though.
Well the hornworms would be fine for her, pretty soon. Try the chicken babyfood she should really like that. Great she is picking at the collard greens too!
I think she is in good hands now, for sure.
At least she has some weight on her though, that will give her a better chance for survival right now. I hope that her lip is getting better.
Keep us posted!

Hi Jacqui,

Nice of that guy to leave all of that pertinent info out of his ad, and use what appears to be an old picture! Well at least you got her instead of someone who doesn't know what they're doing.

Some bd's do have yellow in their mouths naturally, so it's not necessarily an indication of problems. Cam's mouth is very yellow inside and that's just normal. My vet told me a story about another vet that he works with that was all ready to start treating a bd for liver problems due to a yellow mouth when in fact it was just normal pigmentation! Check with your vet and see what he/she thinks.

Wait, that was worded wrong. I'm tired, I'm anemic, and I'm stressed. I was trying to answer too many questions at once. I meant her TONGUE was yellow, not her foot.... Her foot is whitish and looks like it just has a big lump on her heel. I'll see if I can get a pic now that she's tired. She's not sleeping though, she probably hurts.

She keeps trying to burrow under the paper towels? I keep moving her onto my t-shirts to burrow, but she insists on paper towel burrowing? Weird girl. I got my babyfood, but Walgreens was out of Betadine! The woman there recommended a different liquid, said it was exactly the same, but I don't know. We have it, it's called Hibiclens. I'm not trusting a woman who works at Walgreens. What do you guys say?

Yes, the lip is definitely getting better so far. I'll try to get a picture of that, too....

Well, I learned so far that she does NOT like heavy metal. LOL I accidentally left my phone by her viv, and it went off, and she was not pleased with my ringtone. She doesn't have a black beard. It's more orange and yellow. So maybe the tongue is normal.... I'll try to get a pic of THAT, too! Gah. My pictures suck.

The guy thought she was completely healthy. He was a country bumpkin with a low IQ. He never held her, and didn't take very good care of her at all. He thought that because she was fat, she was healthy. He obviously didn't do his research.... but, I have her now, and he's not getting any more because of his new baby. I feel sorry for the baby.

Can you believe that's why he was getting rid of Gem? Because he didn't want her biting the baby? You'd think he'd know he was doing something wrong.... some people! And he didn't even name her.... mental abuse! I'm frustrated with the guy. There's algae in the bowl and dried carrots and poo in her food dish and she's on dirty sand and eating wild bugs and he gets rid of her because he doesn't want her biting the baby.... gah. I need to go to bed.

I don't blame you at all with all those lame things he was doing/not doing. The poor thing, it's a wonder she even let you touch her after all the mistreatment she's received. :banghead:

If you're having trouble getting the algae and discoloration out of her food bowl, you might want to consider buying a new one rather than taking any chances with that one.

You've done a great job with Gem already, she is finding out what TLC is thanks to you.

Oh, no! I don't get on the forums for twelve hours and I miss the most important thread!

Poor Gem! :( She's in good hands, though. I'm so glad she's with you, Jacqui. :) It sounds like she's on the road to recovery already.

Good luck with her!! She is a beautiful girl.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
