6-8" seems to be the most popular answer to this question. Also your going to want this to be his Basking location, So try to arange your lighting ina way that his 100*F-105*F basking spot is in this 6-8" area.

No. Your basking light needs to be as close as possible to your UVB light. There is a correlation between long term eye health and the proximity of these lights to each other. The 6-8" is the optimal distance of your bearded dragon to the UVB light, so just make sure he can get that close to it. This would be the distance for the Repti-Sun 10.0 - other bulbs have different recommendations.

I hope I explained that well. LOL We have our basking light tuned into 105 degrees directly under it (the basking platform), and the UVB is just behind it. My dragon can get on her elevated hammock which is along the back wall if she wants to get closer to the UVB. That's the 6" place, and the basking area is about 8-9" distance.

Yep that's fine to do, just check the temp with a sensor thermometer for about 20 minutes to makes sure it has time to register an accurate temperature, and slide the UVB right up next to it.
