Oh, I totally agree. I did everything "by the book" with Draco, my very first beardie about four years ago? Alas he passed away pretty early (was full adult size, but he was maybe two or three?), and I have to wonder if it was the sand I'd kept him on. With all the awesome advice here, Kimba went from a way tiny baby to the handsome young adult he is today. I don't think I could have done it without this board!

Awww poor baby im sorry to hear that and yeah I started everything by the book >> bought a ZILLA STARTER KIt >> worst decsion IVe ever made. Spent 120$ on the kit and spent atleast another 100$ on upgrades to fix the problems* with the kit >>

All in all i now have a happy 12 inch 3 month old Healthly beardie -vet checked him out- says he has a good weight to him and hes sheding alot implying hes growing fast. Its all thanks to this site for advice Ive gotten off here about diets subtrates and more. :) Im more than happy to help people in petstores looking at beardies. I got stopped by a teenage boy and his mother who was looking at loki. They were saying how hes so much more colorful then thiers they asked me alot of questions about diets and subtrates. Im glad they talked to me. Thier critter was on a cricket/romaine lettece diet at 1 month old and they had the zilla tank too.

Anyways all in all IVe yet to find a good book to my likeing becuase i like hearing stories and experiances from people personally :) Books maybe "recordings" of peoples exserpiances but its not like you can easily ask them questions. Also not all book agree with your views. If a book sujest you should turn your tank to 140 degrees would you do it? Knowing that temp is to hot for beardie but becuase a book said so would you still do it?

Thats my opioion :) everyone has a right to each's own. Dosnt mean we are all right, or wrong. Its just depending on what you beleive is best for your beardie. '

If anyone knows any good books beside the manual Please tell me Id more than happyily read it.

Thankyou for reading

Oh, thank you. I am going to talk to my neighbors again, because I know their poor little rescued beardie doesn't have a UV light (hah, I just typed USB - working on computer stuff much? ;) ) and when I started talking prices about how you could get the bulbs so much more cheaply at Pet Mountain, I could see the "oh!" look in their eyes and not the good look either. They have him on the commercial bearded food and freeze dried crickets. I so wanted to run home, get some nice fat gutloaded crix and watch this guy chow.

I am so happy you mentioned your guy shedding a lot. Kimba does too, and while I figured it was from all his good food (greens in the morning when I get off work, crix later in the afternoon), I did wonder.

And I second the "would love to read more good books" comment. :)

I work third shift, so keep these hours even on the weekends. He came with the commercial pellet diets and a can o' crickets, so that's what they've been feeding him.

Id say ask em if u can bring him a treat? Prepare a small salad of mixed veggies - colllard and such- and then bring a few live crickets and see if he likes that better?

The BD manual has 26 pages on Diet and feeding Management-excellent resource.Well worth getting book for that chapter alone!!!

Personally, I dont go by books. Ive found that in most books (not just beardie books... Any animal care book Ive read) about 75% of the info is mostly right, but rest of it is crap that can kill your pet. Even in recent books. There are so many new things that are being discovered about reptile care, a book just cant keep up with it! Alot of the books seem to be pretty old fashioned too- Like reccomending sand as a substrate, lettuce as a staple veggies, UTHs and stuff. The internet is just a much better source.

I would read a book that Tom wrote though, LOL! I would trust that info :D

I agree, years of "on hand" experience especially from a breeder would prove to be very useful/helpful.

That's exactly what I'm thinking about doing.

A lot of advice is well meaning, but mostly wrong in most cases.I rely on expert advice mostly through research,papers,books....

May I point out that anyone can publish a book and refer to themselves as experts? What exactlly qualifies someone as an expert? There are tons of people on here who have years of experience in raising and successfuly breeding Bearded Dragons, some probably have even more experience then these so called experts you keep talking about, the only difference between the "experts" and the people on here, is that the people on here actually care about the well being on the animal instead of just writing down whatever they think people want to hear to try to intice them to buy their books.

Expert would be Philippe de Vosjoli, the main author of The Bearded Dragon Manual for starters. He is the best selling author of more than 20 books and 100 articles on reptiles. He pioneered comercial breeding of beardies. He founded Advanced Vivarium Systems books the #1books on reptile care.I think most would agree that he knows the husbandry of Bearded dragons.....so his advice would be very credible....

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
