I think the 40 breeders are perfect size for them. Mine rarely leaves a couple different areas so i believe it's not too small and not ridiculously big either. Dave is my 18 inch male and here is his tank:
It looks a little less bare now, but you get the idea! haha
Thank you, Kelsey. He does have room in there to move around.
It was hard for me to tell from pics what size the tanks were. Also after looking at Oscar's 4x2x2 I couldn't tell if the 40 would really work for me. I can't seem to find any 50 breeders out there either.
I work at a pet store and we can't even get 50 gallon breeders! I would love if we could get them! But in my opinion 40 gallon breeder for a bearded dragon than a 55 gallon. Dave doesn't climp very much so it's a pointless waste of space to have anything taller than the 40 breeder. It's only as tall as my baby beardies 20 gallon. Which makes it easier to get into even though it's on a desk. also it doesn't take as high wattage bulbs to warm up the tank!
I think they're perfect and not too bad for $100.
Here's Viggo's old tank. I've since built a new viv for him. It's not exactly a 40 breeder. It's a 55 breeder but it has the same floor space as the 40, it's just a bit taller.
RedHandFilms, where did you find a 55 breeder? I can't seem to find anything bigger than a 40 here. Also, out of curiosity, what is the blue top for, and what is the skinny metal thing on the blue top, LOL
The 55 is second hand. It was a saltwater fish tank about 15 years ago when it belonged to my father's boss. The fish died and we got it for our first dragon, Draco. Draco had it for 10 years and it then sat in a shed for a few years until I got Viggo. A few months ago I built a huge viv for Viggo and sold the tank to a family for their first beardie. So, no, I can't tell you where to find one.
The blue thing on top is the lid to a plastic storage container, which I used as Viggo's feeder box. It does help to hold a little more heat in the tank rather than let it all get out through the screen. The skinny metal thing is the a metal spray bottle for water.
Thank you for answering my questions. So maybe I should be looking at regular fish tanks instead of just looking for reptile tanks. You have been a big help. I will hopefully be going to a reptile show in November and can find something there at a reasonable price to put Calypso in.
(until I can get my husband to build another 4x2x2 viv, that is)
Is a 40 gallon breeder just a long tank not tall? I ask cause there is a 40 gallon tank like that at the petstore I go to that I have been eyeing. I just can't imagine the size of a 100 gallon tank.
This is my 40 gallon breeder tank. It's a work in progress but I have enough now so I can go pick up my beardie this week!!! YAY!!!
(so tank is dragon-less at the moment while I get my temps stable)
Cardboard over the screen top to try to trap a little heat...
That looks great, so nice & neat. I do have a concern though if you don't mind. The clamp light holder looks like it is resting on the screen top and I would be afraid that it would melt the rim of the screen as they get very hot. Is it a mercury vapor bulb or a reptile basking bulb? Is the light in the strip holder a UVB or just a standard fluorescent tube (non UVB)?

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
