GTP can be just as docile as any ball python. They just take more time and effort than other species.

What's the point in handling gtp anyway? THey are more "fragile" then most morelia. And it is not good for hatchlings.

i've read care guides of a few big breeders who say not to attempt any handling before GTP'S are a year old although they do generally say that they can become handlable with work I'd just be so scared of hurting them, they are more of a display snake

and while i'd like a snake that is a little bit of a display animal ie is pretty and i'm going to see more on average than my corn (i say on average as for about a month she went nuts hunting round her tank for a mate i think, however has now gone back to normal)

My day geckos have made me realise how much I do love to be able to handle my reps, don't get me wrong i love them they will both take both fruit puree and insects from our hands Yoshi our female who we've hand since she was a baby isn't really scared of us at all anymore and has jumped onto me on a few occassion however generally gets a little panic darts like a pin ball and i guide her back to the safety of her tank, the male isn't so good but we've only had him nearly 2 months

i'm babbling again
I'm pretty stuck on the jungles but its going to be a while before I get one,I think my OH is resigned to it happening now but first we're concentrating on the day geckos, getting a new big viv to put them in together see if they breed etc, then get cresties, and are currently talking about some sort of shelving units for all the viv's and finally when that all sorted and can afford it my carpet

its probably a good thing I can't rush into it, aren't people always saying patients is a virtue
i suppose i'll appreciate it all the more for having to wait so long

sorry Dave for hjacking your thread

progress going with your little B&W jungle? hows feeding going? has he tagged you at all?

That's kinda like asking what the point is in in handling a bearded dragon....

They're not that fragile. My friend has three of them, and they've been handled since they were babies. Not roughly, of course, but then again, neither my friend nor I ever handle any of our reptiles even remotely roughly.

I barely handle any of my herps.. They don't tame down they only tolerate it, it doesn't help them in anyway.

What's the point in having pets if not to enjoy them and handle them? All 6 of our snakes are handled at least every few days otherwise they'd become alot less enjoyable.

So you would prefer your enjoyment even though they don't like you handling them?

How do you know they don't like it? Our mexican black king used to curl up and watch tv or nap with my brother in bed.

Show me evidance that they like it? They tolerate it, they don't enjoy it or get anything out of being held, they aren't a dog or a cat, if you want something to cuddle get a dog/cat.

I'm not attempting to fight with you, simply saying that i've never had a snake act like they're unhappy about being held. Yes I only have 6 snakes and have only allowed snakes in my home for the past 3 years but it's my opinion that they don't dislike it. Maybe yours don't because you don't handle them frequently. Everyone has a different opinion about things.

By the way I don't really like dogs and cats due to the hair they shed, that's why I have snakes and rats.

Show me evidence they don't like it. And I don't mean just those times when they're in a bad mood and snap/hiss at you. I mean every time.

I believe that it varies with different snakes. Many imports will never become accustomed to handling. My Borneo blood isn't the friendliest, and although he tolerates handling, I highly doubt he enjoys it.

My ball python, on the other hand, has been with me for almost two years and she does seem to enjoy handling. Or, at least, she enjoys to stretch out and crawl around. Having been with her for almost two years, I have learned to "read" her pretty well. After a half hour or so out of the cage, she whips me and makes a beeline for dark places, which is her way of telling me that she's done.

But, as I said before, it varies.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
