The entire internet says Albon or Baycox for coccidia and only Albon is prescribed by the 3 reptile vets in my town.

Kingofnobby, are all these people wrong?

Most likely tied to the company/s who manufacture/s these 2 drugs contractually, so are reluctant to prescribe other drugs (which are used successfully elsewhere).

Also , this thread has not been running long, and certainly not as long as one life cycle for the coccidian infesting your beardie either, I think I pointed out this wont clear up overnight early in the thread and no one contradicted this.

It's worth mentioning that my crew was prescribed SMZ/TMP for coccidia with great success. I believe it's supposed to be less harsh..? I'm not as experienced with medications as others are on this site, just wanted to add some input on treatment

Is that Trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole ?
https://www.drugbank.ca/drugs/DB00440
Trimethoprim is sometimes used alone as an antimalarial.

You also said that you have no experience with coccidia.

Yes, it is
"Each 5 ml (1 tsp) SMZ/TMP Oral Suspension contains 200 mg sulfamethoxazole and 40 mg trimethoprim. SMZ/TMP Oral Suspension may be used to treat bacterial and protozoal infections. SMZ/TMP may be used in horses where control of bacterial infections is required during treatment of acute strangles, respiratory tract infections, acute urogenital infections, wound infections and abscesses. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim."

My vet has prescribed Ponazuril for coccidia 20mg/ml suspension from a veterinary compounding pharmacy. It seemed to work well.

Here is some info on the meds I have coming:

25mg/mL strength is 2.5% and is much easier to dose for animals under 50 grams.

Please read this before giving any medications How to Read a Syringe !

2.5% 25mg/mL Liquid Toltrazuril Coccidiocide for babies and smaller reptiles! This is a revolutionary product that is effective in eliminating coccidia in one to two doses, yet is safer and more effective than Albon. No more scary side effects or need for excessive fluid and beneficial bacterial therapy.

Great for treatment of baby bearded dragons, geckos, chameleons, and all other small reptiles needing treatment for coccidia.

Comes in 2mL, 5mL, 10mL, 15mL with easy dose tip and a 1cc oral dosing syringe.

The suspension has almost no flavor and taste like slightly sweet water. It is also thin enough to inject into bugs with a needle syringe.

How does it work? The active substances in this medicine interfere with the enzymes needed for coccidia to breathe. As a result, it is able to kill the parasites at all stages. Also effective against roundworms.

2.5% Toltrazuril Suspension 25mg per mL

The best way to fight coccidia is by prevention. To help prevent coccidia from infecting your animal, always remove poop as soon as possible. Never feed in any environment where poop is present, not even small particles. Do not allow any animals to eat live bugs that have been hiding in a cage where particles of poop may be present. Do not put any live feeders back in with the others once it has been in any animals cage. Even dust from poop can have coccidia eggs in it, dispose of all uneaten feeders that have been in any cage over 20 minutes. Coccidia kills the cells that line the intestines and can be fatal if left untreated.

Thanks for the tip. I guess I have a bad reptile vet problem where I live. I have read a lot of success stories here from people that used Albon and a probiotic.

Here is an example of my Vet problem;

The Vet told us that her Technician was the resident expert on dragons. ( I had hopes that the Vet was the expert) This is the same Tech that told us antibacterial dish soap is what we should use to clean the cage.

I really feel for you + for the baby, I know this is very difficult.

Rather than the 40 gal. tank as a temp. home, just pick up a medium plastic tote from Walmart or a Dollar store. Not a tall tote but a shorter one and fix the lights on top. A flourescent light fixture can be set across the top and an aluminum one can be suspended over it or hung over the side like this.

It's very easy to clean and cage decor like cardboard egg crates can be thrown away + replaced daily. The flooring can be paper towel for easiest clean up. Or you can use nothing at all on the floor.

Wow .... I don't think I'd ever use that vet ever again .... that's really bad and really incompetent, vets have been deregistered for less here in Australia.

That is a real good suggestion regarding a smaller, easier to clean enclosure. I just have to figure out the heat gradient.

Here is a sad picture. The temp basking furniture has been cleaned with boiling water, a lot.

Do you think relocating her will stress her and irritate the problem?

No, she's not well anyway and she may even go after some live food if she's in a smaller area.

I've forgotten, what is her name ? She's still not looking thin or miserable.....I know she's not well but I'd give her a chance.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
