My beardie has been opening his mouth as if he was gaping but his heat light is not on. Is this normal?

What are your basking temps?
Does your beardie do this even when not basking or just when basking?

His basking temps are a little over 100 degrees and he does this when basking and even when not

What do the night time temps get down to in your beardies viv?

Is this gaping something your beardie has been doing for some time or is it a new thing?
Maybe I should also ask how old is your beardie?
And how long have you had your beardie?

Can you see any saliva stringing from upper to lower jaw when your beardie is gaping?

Beardies normally gap to regulate temps I call it a smile because it's like they are so happy to be warm enough to have to regulate....but in some cases if they get to cool then they can get a mild Respiratory Infections and they will also do this in the beginning stages. Not trying to send you into a panic just if it is alot more gaping than your normally use to seeing and the temps are not to high then just watch closely for saliva and pay attentions to breathing if you see saliva an or hear any breathing sounds then I'd suggest a vet visit.

my beardies temps reach around 80 degrees at night and ive had him since i bought him as a baby from a pet shop he is 4 years old. hes always gaped when basking but never when not. and there is saliva when he opens his mouth. is this something i should worry about?

coulld be respritory infection.

If your seeing more gaping than usual and even when not basking alone with saliva(this is what would most concern me) I'd have him checked out. It's always best to catch these things early and it will give you peace of mind...if nothing else it will rule that out.
