Depending on their age I would say it is a sign of growth if they are younger, older dragons may shed just to get rid of old skin every once in a while as you said. Sheding in a younger dragon is most likely a sign of a healthy growing dragon.
If you would like to make the shedding process easier on him/her you can
bath or mist with water more frequently.
One more thing which I'm sure you already know but I wanted to add just incase, make sure you do not pull any of the shedding skin off, this can actually hurt your beardie and damage the new scales underneath.
