How do you know visually when they become adults old enough to breed? I know the adult males have wings but how do you know when the females become adults? When they turn all shiny?

I found this picture to be really helpful:

You can see the shiny, darker adults easily -- one male and two female, I believe -- and babies and nymphs.

Nice photo!

They will be shinier than the nymphs, but if you look, the mature females have wing stubs. They look like little wings that never finished growing. Once you see them in person, you will immediately know the difference, though that photo shows it quite well.
