Anyone have any good ideas on how to retrieve the roaches without touching them? Tweezers don't seem to work well!
Oh and how does one go about separating sizes or do I leave them all together?

You can "harvest" them with paper towel/toilet paper rolls in the bins, but you will get all different sizes. The best way, honestly, is to just pick them up. I can understand your hesitation, BUT, they do not bite and are not very fast. They just feel a little strange the first time. You will get used to it. Trust me.

The "bucket method" mentioned here on the forum is very usefull for sorting or sizing, but I think you still would need to touch them.

I hope this helps....... :)

I'll add to Sam's reply w/ a video that I made. Instead of sending you trying to dig it up I'll just post it again. Here's the link on my video that explains "The Bucket Method". And I must say that once you get over your fear of the roaches and handle them... You're life will become MUCH easier when dealing w/ them. :D

Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints! ;-) Just had to add it. But being from DC, I'm a Skinz fan.....we all know how great THEY are right now.

Back to harvesting. I went up the pet shop and bought these "tweezers" that are about 12" long. They are GREAT for picking out the nymphs if your not mass sorting. I also have two buckets on the standby waiting for a big mass sort.

I was squeamish about the at first, especially the Adult males. Now I just scoop em out with my fingers and toss em in the Dusting bag, once you get over the initial fear you will feel like a fool for not doing it before, so much faster, less tedious and it makes getting the right size roaches easy.

Just nut up and do it :blob5:

I was waiting on that. LOL.

I have to say at first, I was having problems catching them with the tweezers too, but with practice....you should be able to snatch a fly from the air with a pair of chopsticks. ;-)

I think that eventually, you'll get frustrated and just grab one. But, if your still really bothered by them, you could go up to the pharmacy and get some rubber gloves. (like the ones medics use). Then you wont notice they touch you so much. Just a thought.....good luck.

Don't make me send my 6 year old daughter over there to show how to pick up roaches w/ your hands! She's quite sufficient when it comes to gathering up the roaches (by hand) and feeding them to our animals. She also has n/p telling friends of mine who are too scared to touch the roaches to stop being wimps. I mean we're only about 3000 x's bigger than the roaches are! We giveth and taketh life away when it comes to them. And since they have no self defense other than running and hiding, there isn't a darn thing that them little suckers can do about it! LOL!!!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
