I'm sure someone will know better but Kale everyday on its own isnt very good and mealworms are no good for beardies as they have a hard casing and very little of anything else. Your beardie needs a mix of veg and live crickets or roaches also locusts any of these can be fed to him. I would say...

Put in a normal spot bulb for his heat they are just as good for his bright light and heat,you only need a ceramic bulb for night if the temp drops below 65 at night. He really needs his bright light a normal spot will do it. Sue .Hope he starts eating properly soon.

Regarding sand , a lot of people on here use paper towels as they are easy to clean and dont look to bad,others use newspaper some of us still use sand and have no problems. Its basically down to your choice and what is right for you and your beardie, Good luck when you get your new friend, Sue
