Silkworms are harder to get and harder to keep than Phoenix worms... Good source is phoenixworms.com There are some other posts about this.. Recommend trying to use the search to see some of the other comments about good sources.

Most good companies will use heat packs in with the crickets. I am in a similar situation come winter time though. What I have been doing is ordering the crickets and having them delivered to my local petstore... and just give them a few bucks for letting me use them. That is only because UPS...

Yea you really can't wash it. It's basically changing it out once a mth to do it right. Sand is a huge pain in the butt to be honest and like the above poster said can harbor some unwanted things in it. I recommend against it.
