Can anyone tell me the name of a UVB bulb that they like besides Power Sun? The 100watt Power Sun that I bought last week damaged my beardies eyes. Looking for an alternative.
Thanks
The Exo Terra Solar Glo is a distant third (in terms of UVB output), but also a good and safe bulb (comparable to the PowerSun, but hasn't had any of the issues that the PowerSun has been experiencing).
Em,
Thanks, for your helpful email. I'm going to print it out and keep it for future reference. I'll hop online and get one of these bulbs ordered today. Thanks, Franki (and Rocky)
Joe, Drache is collecting PowerSuns for research on what is wrong with them, have you thrown away yours ? If not, please contact her, and arrange to send this defective MVB.
I agree with Em!! She helped me out with getting a better bulb. I have both t-rex and the megaray. I would suggest getting the megaray! It produces more heat, but other than that both of my beardies are happy and healthy. My megaray beardie had to adjust to the light at first. He would close his eye one at a time, so if you see this it is normal.
Oh that is too bad. So, you had the Powersun 100watt with a red dragon on the front of the box? If so, that is their "new" light which has incorrect phosphors on it that is making it too strong. They are currently under some changes with it right now, I hope.
I just saw your post on the thread for me with information. I appreciate it. I hope your boy is going to be ok.
In the meantime, try to rehydrate him daily right now. Give him a week or two before putting another UVB source over him & just use a bright white basking light so his eyes & his body will get a rest.
I am in total agreement, the Megaray is superior to all other lights, then, the T-rex active UV heat is next.
Thanks to everyone for all the input. I ordered the MegaRay this morning and it is supposed to arrive this week. I have him under a basking light alone now and he already looked better this morning. He still closes his right eye some but his left eye seems completely normal.
Thanks again for everyone's help. If it hadn't been for this blog I wouldn't have associated Rocky's problem with the new light. I really appreciate the info I get here!

Indeed, the info here has saved many dragons (including my own). Glad to help. We use a T-Rex currently and our girl has done extremely well under it, but we're planning to give the MegaRay a try when it's time to replace it come December/January.
The best, and good luck with the new light. I believe your beardie will be MOST appreciative.
I have another question: My beardie seems to be sleeping a LOT lately. I just got over the UVB scare so I guess I'm still a little jittery about his health. He slept from 6pm until I woke him at 7am this morning. I took him to the vet who told me he looks perfectly healthy. I came home from work this afternoon and he is asleep again. Does anyone else's beardie go through periods where they sleep a lot? I haven't received the new mercury vapor bulb in the mail yet so he is still just under a basking lamp. Do you think it could be the lack of UVB rays?

It could very well be the lack of UVB, yes. When we had our girl under a poor UVB, she slept a lot. During the time we had turned it off, and were waiting for the new lamp, she continued to sleep a good portion of the day (mainly, waking late and retiring very early). When we installed the new UVB (a good quality UVB  ), she perked up within hours.
Em,
Thanks for the info. I've been intending to take Rocky outside some during the day to get some sunlight while we're waiting on the new bulb to arrive but everytime I come home from work he's crashed and I hate to wake him. I think I'll insist that he get up and out in the sun tomorrow, though. The vet said he appeared to be very healthy when I took him in today so that eases my mind quite a bit.
Thanks again for your input.
Franki
I think one reason that he has been so tired is that he has been under stress due to the bad light. It has most likely dehydrated him also being exposed to the low wavelength frequency UVB lighting so do try to get extra oral fluids into him. Taking him outside may help his demeanor as well.
Great to hear that the Megaray is on its' way. I am quite sure that he will love it, too.
