Tropical 50 vs Desert 50?

I just bought a Zilla Tropical 50 and wasn't sure if I should've gotten the Desert 50 instead!

Also is it safe to remove the glass that came on it?

You'll want the desert 50 because that provides a higher output similar to sunlight (it works best at 6-8'' out). The tropical 50 is lower output and designed for shade animals. You definitely want to remove the cover from the fixture because glass and plastic coverings will intercept the UVB wavelengths rendering the bulb useless.

No, that could be harmful. For safety reasons I wouldn't allow the light to be any closer than 6''.
