Tiles?

Is there a preferred tile to use as a substrate? One that isn't slippery and maintains heat well?

I use ceramic tile. And I don't glue it down, so I can just take it out and wash it, then put it back in.

Tile with a good texture is good. I use slate tile that is reddish orange ( it looks great and is easy to clean). I just lay mine down on top if felt. Most importantly, choose a tile you like!

I agree. Get one with texture.

I bought 18x18 squares and my boyfriend cut them down by about a 1/4" to fit.

Ok. Are there any grip for his claws on the tiles? Like if he tries to walk quickly he won't slip

Yes, but not so much that it would catch in his claws. It definitely has texture, but not too scratchy so it won't hurt him.

When I first came to BeardedDragon.org I felt so overwhelmed and I was using sand (with Pudgy). When I read about tiles I felt like, "HUH??" Then I just looked at the Viv thread where people have all their pictures, and I went to Home Depot for Doc and it was easy. I say definitely go to Home Depot and as soon as you see the tile, you'll know it's the right one for you and your beardie.

Haha. I never used sand. Even when I first got him. But I've been thinkig about building one of my own. And reptile carpets don't come in custom sizes
