Hey,
Phoenix worms are a great staple! They can be fed exclusively, along with crickets, or in any combintation with other insects that you want. I fed them to my baby girl for months as a staple with no crickets or other insects and she thrived and thrived. P. worms helped her to grow, made her color POP out and kept her healthy.
As of now I feed her mix of p. worms and other feeders only because she was getting bored of just the p. worms...she wanted to sample other fine cuisine...lol
P. Worms are naturally high in calcium. This is great because you don't have to dust them with calcium powder as you would other feeders. I just dusted mine a couple of times a week w/ a vitamin supplement. I found the easiest way to dust them was to put them in a dish and then use my finger to gently tap vitamin powder over them. This worked well for me because my beardie is ULTRA finicky and wont eat dusted critters...she never seemed to notice on the p.worms though...lol.
Phoenix worms also have a perfect level of calcium and phosphorus.
P. worms are easy to care for...you don't have to feed them or clean them. They come in a substrate that keeps them in great condition until they get eaten (poor wormies...lol). They stay fresh for a couple of weeks at room temperature. Although I have never tried it, I have been told that they can stay fresh for much longer at a controlled temperature of 50-60 degrees. You should not refrigerate them as that much of a temperature drop could kill them. If there bedding gets dry, you can add a few drops of water to moisten it...but most of the time that doesn't happen. As p. worms mature, they darken in color. Ive been told that the darker the p. worm, the higher the calcium level. They eventually turn black. Once they turn black, they are close to changing into black soldier flies. They will harden and appear dead. Often the tip of the worm will kind of curve. I'm pretty sure this indicates that they are about to change. To avoid that change, just make sure to feed the darker worms first.
My worms have changed a few times recently, only because Lizzy is bored and not eating as many as she used to. She did however greatly enjoy a Black soldier fly today....it was her first one...lol
As for buying p. worms in the UK.. The Phoenix Worm Store (phoenixworm.com) state under there faq that they currently ship to distributors in Canada and the UK who have obtained clearances to import p. worms. They are not able to ship directly to customers outside the United States due to customs restrictions. They say to contact them by e-mail to find out or specific information for your area.
I hope you find them! They really are great! Good Luck!!!
