i've been trying not to check on them for like 2 or 3 days just to take out the dead ones and replace them. i looked this morning and i found 4 aliens. so that's pretty cool. also my eggs first batch of dragon eggs from Bertha which were laid on Dec 18 all but one egg has hatched so far. i started with 23. one of the eggs started to mold about 4 or 5 weeks in and one of the babies died shortly after climbing out. he had a big yolk sac attached to him yet. and the one that has yet to hatch. So out of 23 eggs i have 19 babies and that one i hope will hatch soon. i need to redo the way i have my incub. set up soon. i think my female is going to lay another clutch this week or soon. she's been digging the last 2 days. so wish me luck.

ok here's a question: what does everyone use if they have to change their worm bedding?
I had to do so today. i was using apples and potatoes but to much moisture and my bedding started to surrond the food and get all hard so i used our kitchen strainer and got all the big stuff and left all the good stuff. i know you are suppose to change it once in a while cuz of the frass and stuff but what is the fastest way to do so?

There is no fast way.
You should try to remove all old food each day before replacing it with fresh. I usually change the substrate about every 2 months. When you notice that there is no large peices of wheat germ flakes and lots of worm poop then just strain all of your worms out. I use a large medal spoon with holes in it as my worms are large now an I don't really need to worry about them falling thru the holes.

Are you just putting a half of an apple with the skin still on it in there?
Anyway I only use the apple once in awhile because I was having the same problem.
(Created to much moisture in my substrate even with good ventilation) or (putting on dish)
I found that squash, carrots, and potatoes along with the water crystals worked best for me.

How big are your worms now?

my worms are almost 2+ inches. they are the ones i ordered. i didn't think about using a straining spoon. i was thinking about getting a cheap plastic bowl and putting some holes in it to change the worms. i had to change them out or atleast take out the cbig clumps before they made my bedding a mess. i am using carrots now. how do oyu use the water crystals. i was thinking about using them but have no idea. i'll be getting a pound for almost $13 that's the cheapest that i've seen. that includes shipping. i know it's going to take me a while to use a pound of water crystals but it's cheap. i like buying in bulk. i also like to bargin shop as much as i can. i was thinking that when the beetles start to lay their eggs to change them out every 3 or 4 weeks but put them in a new big until they are little bigger and then dumb them all in one big when they are all about the same size and use the big bin for feeding out of.

You mix like a teaspoon of dry crystals to a quart of water. It takes awhile for the water to completely absorb. Then you just place them on a plastic lid and set it in the tub of worms. Usually by the time they have buried the lid the crystals have been sucked dry.

when the beetles start to lay their eggs to change them out every 3 or 4 weeks but put them in a new big until they are little bigger and then dumb them all in one big when they are all about the same size and use the big bin for feeding out of.
That's what I do. :)

Hey everyone,

I have some problems breeding superworms. I got about 30 beetles and only about 50 worms were born ( in about 3 months ). I tried many different substrates, right now i have them in 2 boxes, 1 contains oat cereal, some dog food and i add fresh vegetables every few days. A second box contains pieces of wood, egg carton, soil and sawing leftovers ( i dont know how you spell it in english, its normaly used for pets like rabits ). I spray it everyday soo its full of moisture. I must be doing something wrong because as far as i read, most users said getting bettles is the hard part, after that you sit back and have tons of worms.

Maybe if someone has lots of experience in breeding them could add me to msn for some individual help, it would be cool. PM me if you are interesting.

Im trying to start a colony of supers, i ave a few seperated in indevidual containers. They have been in there for close to 3 weeks now and none of them have started to morph yet. I check them daily or every other day to make sure they are still alive. what am i doing wrong, or what can i do.

i kept mine in a dark place and kept a heating blanket under them only cuz our house is always cold in the winter. i am trying to morph over 200 worms which i know is a bit much, but i am going to be feeding 10 adults and 20 babies and using them for fishing. plus i am pretty sure i am going to have people near by coming to buy them. so i know i will have places to get rid of them. i've had a bunch of worms die and maybe 3 or 4 aliens die. so far i think i have 5 beetles and almost 20 aliens that need to morph. the main thing is heat and dark.

Hi everyone. Very interesting how you all raise superworms, very good reading material. I read through the entire thread and thought I would share a little of how I give my supers and mealies moisture. I just started with the supers myself a couple months ago. I tried the water crystals on the lid, didn't work for me. The little buggers sank the lid in the substrate. Substrate and water crystals got all nasty. I figured out a way to get them moisture and also to tell if you have babies. I take 2 oz deli cups (3-5), drill/burn/poke holes (4-6) in the bottom, about 1/8" for mealies and 1/4 for supers. Lay them on top of substrate and fill with veggies or fruit. I use carrots. The worms come up through the bottom, get there moisture without spoiling the substrate. I also use leftover veggies each day from my beardies. This works great for baby worms your not sure you have yet. After you take your beetles out, set your cups in with veggies. Check every few days by picking up a piece of carrot or whatever you use. If you have babies, they will be attached to the underside of the veggie and the cups will start to sink as well. To date, I haven't had any mold problems. As the veggies get eaten or dry up, just take out old and replace with fresh.

I also put substrate in with my single worms in 2 oz deli cups. I tried both ways, with and without and had better success, survival rate with substrate. I started with 50 supers and have 20 beetles and 12 pupas waiting to change to beetles. Only a few worms died and the rest were fed to my 2 beardies. The morphs are in one container and the beetles in another with egg crate on top of substrate, with veggies on top of egg crate for moisture. I use wheat bran, oats and fish flakes mixed for the substrate. The supers and beetles seem to love it.

I found a 25# bag of wheat bran at the local feed store for $10. I keep all bran sealed and lids on because of those pesky little moths. I am still buying supers until mine start taking off. My B. dubia roaches are breeding good and I have had some success with crickets too, which I will eventually get away from. I have a clutch of beardie eggs due to hatch out in May. Looks like they will be getting crickets and roaches. Sorry for the long post, got a little winded. :D

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
