24/3/2022 NSW UPDATE EXTRACT
NSW Health is today reporting the death of a young infant due to COVID-19. The two-month-old infant tragically passed away at John Hunter Hospital in December 2021.
The death, first publicly reported in January, was referred to the Coroner, who has this week determined the infant died due to COVID-19 infection. The infant had no underlying health conditions.
NSW Health offers its heartfelt condolences to the family and asks that their privacy be respected during this most difficult time.
The infant was infected with the Omicron variant of COVID-19, as was a two-year-old child from Sydney whose death due to COVID-19 was reported on Monday this week.

NSW Health is also today reporting the deaths of seven adults with COVID-19 – four men and three women.

One person was aged in their 40s,
one person was aged in their 60s,
two people were aged in their 80s
and three people were aged in their 90s.

Of the six adults who died over the age of 65,
three people had received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine
and three people had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. Older age is a significant risk factor for serious illness and death for COVID-19, particularly when combined with significant underlying health conditions.

The man in his 40s who died had received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and had significant underlying health conditions.

Two people were from northern Sydney,
one person was from Sydney's Inner West,
two people were from the Shellharbour area,
one person was from the Mid Coast region
and one person was from the Central Coast.

This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 2,044.

There are currently 1,180 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, including 43 people in intensive care, 14 of whom require ventilation.

There were 24,803 positive test results notified in the 24 hours to 4pm yesterday – including 14,761 positive rapid antigen tests (RATs) and 10,042 positive PCR tests. The 10,042 positive PCR results were returned from a total of 44,406 PCR tests.

There has now been a total of 606,853 positive RATs recorded since reporting began on 13 January 2022.

Following further investigation, 30 COVID-19 cases detected by PCR tests have been excluded and 989 cases previously reported as RAT-positive have been confirmed as PCR-positive cases, bringing the total number of cases detected by PCR tests in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,064,953.

NSW Health is urging everyone to be extra vigilant as COVID-19 cases increase across the state.

The latest NSW COVID-19 weekly data overview for the week ending 19 March 2022 shows reported cases increased over the week, with 122,870 COVID-19 cases reported, an increase of 30 per cent compared with the previous week. The reported case rate remained highest in people aged 10 to 19 years.

In light of the increase, everyone in urged to take four simple precautions to protect each other:
>use a mask in indoor settings where you cannot maintain a safe physical distance from others, and
get your booster vaccine
>get a test and isolate immediately if you have any COVID symptoms,
>clean your hands regularly.

25mar2022-DAILY-LOCAL-CASES-WITH-CURVE-QLD.png

The state recorded another 9730 cases and three deaths on Friday, but there has been no notable increase in the number of patients needing hospital treatment.

Some 265 people are in hospital with the virus, 14 of whom are in intensive care.

The current wave is largely the result of the BA2 Omicron variant and although its arrival is earlier than predicted, Chief Health Officer John Gerrard says it's not unexpected.
"There is no clear indication at this stage stage when this wave will peak, it's a bit too early, we haven't got enough data (but) it will be some time in April," he said on Friday.

While virus hospital numbers haven't increased, Health Minister Yvette D'Ath said the number of staff off work because they were COVID-19 positive or needing to quarantine was having an impact on the health system.

More than 2400 health workers are furloughed, up from about 1600 at the start of the week.
>>>
Queensland schools are being encouraged to reinstate mask-wearing after the revelation that one in 50 of the state's students have tested positive for COVID-19.

The government, meanwhile, has come under fire for failing to adequately audit ventilation in schools.

Chief Health Officer John Gerrard said authorities would not "specifically" mandate masks in schools, but encouraged principals to reintroduce them if required during "significant outbreaks".
"It all depends on the individual schools, the individual staff — the leadership of the schools can make those decisions themselves," he said.

Last week 14,000 COVID-19 cases were reported in schools — a 55 per cent increase on 9,000 the week before.

This week a further 15,338 cases were reported among children aged five to 11, according to Queensland Health data obtained by the ABC.

Five audits in Brisbane
Ventilation audits began at Graceville State School, McGregor State High School, Albany Creek State High School, Narbethong Special School and Sherwood State School in February this year, Education Minister Grace Grace's response to a question on notice said.

"The initial draft results generally indicate that the carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the majority of classrooms were at acceptable levels," the Minister's statement said.
"For the small number of classrooms that had slightly elevated CO2 levels, cross ventilation through open airways (windows and doors) on at least two opposing sides of the room would provide adequate ventilation."

The expenditure on ventilation efforts has totalled more than $894,000, including almost $24,000 spent on audits, almost $433,000 on 1,420 carbon dioxide monitors and a little less than $438,000 on 250 air purifiers.

'Extraordinary failure'
Air quality expert Lidia Morawska said the number of schools audited was "grossly inadequate".
"This is such a priority, and this was expected — once the kids are back and there are no masks in schools and there is no ventilation, then COVID would be spreading in schools," she said.
"We knew this was going to happen since the end of last year, but we've been talking about this for the last two years, so what can we say?
"They really need to find out a way of doing [ventilation audits] much, much faster."

LNP education spokesperson Christian Rowan said the state government had failed to adequately plan for sufficient ventilation in schools.
"To learn the Labor state government in Queensland has only assessed five schools to improve ventilation is an extraordinary failure," he said.
"In the same time, the New South Wales Government has been able to assess 2,200 schools."

An education department spokesperson said further ventilation audits had been requested and would be completed "in due course, following delays as a result of recent flooding disruptions".

Ms Grace said the department followed expert health advice and that in most cases natural ventilation and air conditioning and fresh air from outside was sufficient.
"However, CO2 monitors are available to schools on request, audits can be carried out, and air purifiers are provided where required," she said.

'Didn't see the spike'
Infectious disease expert Paul Griffin said ventilation played an important role in preventing the spread of COVID-19.
"It's not going to take us back to zero, but as a comprehensive package we certainly do need to include a focus on ventilation again," he said.
"There needs to be an ongoing focus on ventilation until we basically get this current situation under control, really, so they absolutely need to keep that work up."

Dr Griffin said there were a multitude of factors contributing to the wave of the COVID-19 sub-variant BA.2.

He said the spread among students was being driven by the slightly more infectious nature of BA.2, the low vaccination rates among children, and because children were not the best at social distancing, hand hygiene or wearing masks.
"Then I think the environment is conducive … with maybe not having addressed ventilation, but also having a lot of them in classrooms, they interact in different classes," Dr Griffin said.
"I think for the first few weeks we switched off a few of the extracurricular activities and other things, so perhaps we didn't see the spike that was inevitable when kids went back to school and that was delayed when we resumed sport and camps.
"I think the floods potentially had a role in that, with people perhaps very appropriately having more important things to focus on during that time."

Back-to-school blitz
To improve lagging vaccination rates among children, Health Minister Yvette D'ath announced vaccination clinics would be open over school holidays.

She also said there would be a vaccination blitz at school clinic when the term resumed after the holidays.
"We do need to lift the vaccination rates of our young children — we want to make it as available as we can to parents," she said.
"But can I say to parents, don't wait until the start of next school term — if you can, please take your child to get vaccinated over the school holidays."

Thousands more rapid antigen tests will be distributed to communities in regional and remote Western Australia in a bid to increase testing accessibility across the state.

Premier Mark McGowan said free rapid antigen tests (RATs) would be made available at pop-up sites in regional town centres.

He said the program would especially target locations where PCR tests were not readily available.
"We're going to have hundreds of thousands distributed. We have a stockpile of RATs and people can line up and get free RAT tests from those pop-up locations," he said.
"We're trying to ensure we keep workplaces open by using this method, and ensure more people can work in hospitals, in schools … whatever it may be, by ensuring more testing."

Free tests are already being distributed at events and locations in Perth, with public transport commuters among those receiving them after handouts began at train stations last Friday.

Remote communities to get more RATs
Part of the free RATs rollout will include cooperation with local Aboriginal organisations to distribute tests to remote Aboriginal communities.
"Obviously, in remote Aboriginal communities, you don't have the opportunity to go and get a PCR test," Mr McGowan said.

Each household in remote communities will receive 20 rapid antigen tests on top of the 15 already being made available across the state.

With WA's restrictions set to be peeled back to level one in most settings from next Thursday, the Premier said it was unlikely any distinction would be drawn between regions.
"Our restrictions at this point in time will be fairly uniform across the state," he said.
"I doubt, but I can't be absolutely certain, that we'll distinguish between the regions again."

Mr McGowan said the state was entering a different phase of the pandemic as it recorded more than 8,000 cases a day, and that it required a different approach, including moving away from contact tracing.
"The important thing we can do is mask wearing, being COVID safe, making sure we have RAT testing and getting vaccination rates up. That's the stage we're at," he said.

The SA Education Union has called for the school term in South Australia to end a week early amid a growing number of COVID-19 cases and staff absences.
The union said a survey of schools last week revealed more than three-quarters of schools and preschools had between one and 10 teachers away each day.

There were similarly high rates of absences among support staff.

The SAEU has suggested officials declare the final week of the current term a pupil-free period.
"As a demonstration of goodwill toward fatigued educators, this break will provide much-needed time to reset in preparation for term two," the union said in a statement on Thursday.
"Words of thanks are not enough. Real measures to address workforce exhaustion are needed now."

In response to increasing case numbers, classes in some schools have been combined.

While authorities this week decided that whole classes would be sent home if 10 or more students tested positive.

The actions came as infections across SA continued to rise with 4742 new cases reported on Thursday, the second-highest daily total since the start of the pandemic.

SA's highest daily total of 5679 came on January 14.

But recent modelling suggested average daily infections could top 8000 and possibly even 10,000 within weeks with a rise also in hospitalisations and deaths.

A meeting of SA's new Emergency Management Council on Friday will consider the response to rising cases as well as existing restrictions, including isolation requirements and statewide mask mandates.

SA currently requires infected people to isolate for seven days but those considered close contacts for 14 days, an arrangement that has come in for significant criticism.

It also deems a close contact to be someone who has face-to-face contact with a COVID-positive person for as little as 15 minutes if no masks were worn.

Premier Peter Malinauskas has asked for further modelling on what the impact would be on case numbers if SA's close contact, isolation and mask-wearing rules were revised.
"We want to make informed judgements," he said.
"The more information we can have, the better for my team."

South Australia's Premier has quickly shut down any talk of public schools finishing term 1 a week early due to the pressures of COVID-19.

The Australian Education Union yesterday said the early closure was needed to help schools and teachers regroup after a chaotic opening to the year that had seen thousands of students and teachers absent for COVID-related reasons.

However, Peter Malinauskas said starting school holidays earlier did not make sense.

He said it would not happen "if I’ve got anything to do with it — and I do".
"I just can't countenance the idea of extending school holidays by an entire week," he told ABC Radio Adelaide.
"The amount of disruptions that would cause parents, cause students, cause people who don't have fixed incomes, that is, they might not be public servants."

He said he spoke to Department for Education chief executive Rick Persse last night to explain his view.

Mr Persse yesterday said extending the Easter school holidays was "in the mix" and he planned to discuss it with the new Education Minister Blair Boyer.

Department figures show 491 teachers were absent on Wednesday because they had COVID-19, were isolating or were caring for someone else — about 200 more than at the start of the month.

Another 287 non-teaching staff were absent.

Out of all public school students, 3.5 per cent had COVID-19 or were isolating on Wednesday.

Australian Education Union state president Andrew Gohl had called for all four days of week 11 (April 11–14) to be declared pupil-free days.

South Australia recorded 4,742 new COVID-19 cases yesterday, the state's second-highest daily caseload on record since the start of the pandemic.

Another two men with COVID-19 died, one aged in his 60s and the other in his 70s.

A meeting of the Emergency Management Council sub-committee of cabinet will discuss easing close contact rules this morning.

South Australia's new Premier has relaxed COVID close contact rules, as the state records 4,549 new cases and four COVID-linked deaths.

Quarantine for household close contacts has been reduced from 14 days to seven days, effective immediately.
"This is about bringing South Australia into line with the rest of the nation," Premier Peter Malinauskas said.

Mr Malinauskas also announced that as of 12:01am tomorrow, the definition of a close contact will change.

To be classed as a close contact, someone will have to have spent four hours in face-to-face unmasked interaction with a positive case. Previously the defined time period was just 15 minutes.

The government will also extend the time frame previously infected people are exempted from consideration as close contacts, from 8 weeks to 12.

The state's latest case numbers brings the total number of active cases to 28,198.

The four COVID-linked deaths include men in their 30s, 40s and 80s, and a woman in her 90s.

The state has 157 people with COVID-19 in hospital, including six in intensive care.

Mr Malinauskas also flagged that mask rules will be relaxed on April 14, unless significant changes occur.

However, people attending events at Adelaide Oval will now only need to wear masks when entering and exiting the oval, and in fully enclosed indoor areas.
"If you're at the footy and you're lining up for your chips and a Coke, or something else, then you will not have to wear a mask unless it's in a fully enclosed environment, which of course most places aren't at Adelaide Oval," Mr Malinauskas said.

Police Commissioner Grant Stevens will also seek a further 28-day extension of his powers under the Emergency Management Act, which was due to expire on April 1.

The rule changes come as Chief Public Health Officer Professor Nicola Spurrier said the state was facing a "BA.2 wave".

Latest advice on COVID-19 re-infection
The re-infection period between when it is likely people could have COVID-19 again will increase from 8 weeks to 12 weeks on Monday 28 March 2022, based on the latest advice from the Communicable Diseases Network Australia.

This means, people who are within 12 weeks of the date of their release from isolation after testing positive to COVID-19 have a low risk of being reinfected.

People who are within the 12 week period of being released from isolation after having COVID-19 will not be considered close contacts and will not be required to get tested if they have symptoms or to quarantine.

This 12-week period applies even if individuals are immunocompromised.

Advice on winter vaccination dose for vulnerable people
The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) have issued advice recommending a winter dose of COVID 19 vaccine for vulnerable people.

Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are recommended for this winter dose, which should be administered 4 months after the booster dose.

Specific groups who should get the winter dose are:

Tasmanians who are 65 or over;
Residents of aged or disability care facilities who are not yet 65 ;
Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people who are 50 or over;
Anyone 16 or over who is severely immunocompromised – for this group the winter dose is most likely their 5th dose as their primary course was 3 doses and their booster their 4th dose.
If you are eligible, the COVID 19 winter dose can be given at the same time as the flu vax – this can be done with your GP or Pharmacy.

26/3/2022 NSW UPDATE EXTRACT
NSW Health is today reporting the deaths of four women with COVID-19.

Two women were in their 70s and two women were in their 80s. Older age is a significant risk factor for serious illness and death for COVID-19, particularly when combined with significant underlying health conditions.

One woman had received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and three women had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Two women were from Sydney's Eastern Suburbs,
one woman was from the Central Coast
and one woman was from northern NSW.

This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 2,055.

There are currently 1,177 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, including 44 people in intensive care, 15 of whom require ventilation.

There were 19,843 positive test results notified in the 24 hours to 4pm yesterday – including 12,160 positive rapid antigen tests (RATs) and 7,683 positive PCR tests. The 7,683 positive PCR results were returned from a total of 51,159 PCR tests.

There has now been a total of 630,615 positive RATs recorded since reporting began on 13 January 2022.

Following further investigation, 52 COVID-19 cases detected by PCR tests have been excluded and 836 cases previously reported as RAT-positive have been confirmed as PCR-positive cases, bringing the total number of cases detected by PCR tests in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,084,577.

With cases and hospitalisations continuing their increase on a week-to-week basis, we urge people to take particular care to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Everyone is urged to take simple precautions to protect each other, such as:
>use a mask in indoor settings where you cannot maintain a safe physical distance from others;
>get your booster vaccine;
>get a test and isolate immediately if you have any COVID symptoms;
> and clean your hands regularly.
