13 March 2022 NSW

Across NSW, more than 95 per cent of people aged 16 and over have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 94.4 per cent have received two doses to Friday 11 March 2022.
Of children aged 12 to 15, 83.6 per cent have received a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 79.1 per cent have received two doses.
Of children aged 5 to 11, 48.3 per cent have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Of people aged 16 plus, 57 per cent have now received a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
This represents 61 per cent of the eligible population that received their second dose more than three months ago.

NSW Health is reporting the deaths of seven people with COVID-19; four women and three men.

One person was aged in their 40s,
one person was in their 50s,
two people were in their 70s,
two people were in their 80s and one person was in their 90s. Older age is a significant risk factor for serious illness and death for COVID-19, particularly when combined with significant underlying health conditions.

Of the people aged over 65, one person had received four doses of a COVID-19 vaccine,
two people had received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine,
and two people had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Two people who died were aged under 65 – a woman in her 40s and a man in his 50s. Both had received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and had significant underlying health conditions.

Two of the seven people were from south western Sydney,
two people were from south eastern Sydney,
one person was from western Sydney,
one person was from Maitland
and one person was from the Wollongong area.

NSW Health expresses its sincere condolences to their loved ones.

This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,984.

There are currently 965 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, including 44 people in intensive care, 20 of whom require ventilation.

There were 13,093 positive test results (cases) notified in the 24 hours to 4pm yesterday – including 7,867 positive rapid antigen tests (RATs) and 5,226 positive PCR tests. The 5,226 positive PCR results were returned from a total of 43,143 PCR tests.

There has now been a total of 479,763 positive RATs recorded since reporting began on 13 January 2022.

Following further investigation, 16 COVID-19 cases detected by PCR tests have been excluded and 484 cases previously reported as RAT-positive have been confirmed as PCR-positive cases, bringing the total number of cases detected by PCR tests in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 981,704.

NSW has reported 13,095 new COVID-19 infections along with a further seven deaths.

The state's caseload continues to fluctuate. Numbers were below 10,000 at the beginning of last week and peaked at more than 16,000 on Thursday, while Saturday's total was 12,850.

Health officials say the majority of fresh infections are among the young, aged between 10 and 19.

Meanwhile, the number of patients in hospital is steady at 965, with 44 in intensive care. Of these, 20 are in need of ventilation.

The latest virus-related fatalities were of four women and three men, NSW Health said on Sunday. One each were aged in their 40s and 50s, two in their 70s, two in their 80s and one was in their 90s.

The state's booster vaccination coverage is still short of the levels authorities had hoped for.

25% of assessed Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley properties uninhabitable; 16 Covid deaths.
Sunday 13 March
Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley recovery coordinator Dean Betts says about 4,000 tonnes a day of waste has been removed from the streets from people’s properties.
The movements are averaging about a truck per minute into those waste stations. In four days we’ve moved more waste than we did in four weeks with the mid-north coast record floods only 12 months ago. So extraordinary work continues but there’s extraordinary work still ahead, just with that relief and cleanup.

Close to 15,000 properties have been assessed ... more than half of those – over 8,000 – have been identified as having damage and we know that about 25% of all the properties are uninhabitable.

So we’re talking about a significant number of people being displaced. We’ve got 1,000 people currently in emergency accommodation.

That’s where we will leave the live blog for Sunday.

Here’s what we covered today:

Flood damage has left 25% of some 15,000 Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley properties that have been assessed so far for damage are “uninhabitable”, recovery coordinator Dean Betts said.
NSW premier Dominic Perrottet has said the deployment of Australian Defence Force troops and rescue teams would be examined as part of a review into the response to the flooding event. Currently there are still 23 evacuation orders in place across the state, with the premier announcing “this event is not over”.
Meanwhile the federal government will provide $35.9m to ensure communities affected by the Queensland and NSW floods can continue access health services, including mental health support.
The NSW government also announced $25m in additional funding for mental health support in the state.
Queenslanders have been warned to avoid “disaster tourism” and stay off the Brisbane River, with the clearing of debris caused by devastating floods expected to take weeks. Maritime authorities say more than 1,000 tonnes of debris have already been removed from Brisbane waterways.

Here are some more details about the support package the NSW premier, Dominic Perrottet, announced earlier.

The NSW government will fast-track access to essential trauma and recovery services to communities hardest hit by the recent flooding in NSW as part of a $25m funding package.

Perrottet said this package will provide mental health support to people in flood-affected communities across the state to help them get through the recovery as they begin to rebuild.

Deputy premier Paul Toole said the investment will have an initial focus on communities across the northern rivers, with other areas likely to be included as the full impact of the floods becomes clearer. He said:

The task before us is complex and extensive. People’s mental health will not only be affected by the floods but by the enormity of the clean-up effort and the uncertainty it brings.

NSW Health will support the immediate mental health needs of the northern NSW community by deploying mental health clinicians from northern NSW, mid-north coast and northern Sydney local health districts. Teams from Hunter New England and western NSW local health districts are also being prepared to travel to northern NSW to assist.

There will be $5m in grants allocated to non-government organisations to deliver local trauma and recovery programs so support is available long after the clean-up has finished.

The Wellbeing Package includes:

$7 m over three years to fund Primary Health Networks to engage both clinical and non-clinical workforce, including staff for the Safe Havens, to boost local access to psychological and clinical support.
$5m over three years to establish grants program for NGOs to fund trauma-based programs. Key focus on supporting young people, older residents and Aboriginal communities.
$5 m for statewide needs based resourcing and support.
$3.5m over three years to appoint Headspace and Lifeline work with affected communities to identify what each community needs.
$3.5m over three years to recruit 10 Local Recovery Coordinators who will coordinate service delivery and identify emerging issues.
$1m to set up four pop-up Safe Havens in the areas hardest hit.

NSW premier Dominic Perrottet has said the deployment of Australian Defence Force troops and rescue teams would be examined as part of a review into the response to the flooding event. Currently there are still 23 evacuation orders in place across the state, with the premier announcing “this event is not over”.

Perrottet said he would “prefer to have as many troops on the ground as possible, where they’re needed”.

“But I don’t want this to turn into a story of New South Wales government at war with the commonwealth,” he said.

You’ve got troops available around the country, and from the ADF and from the commonwealth perspective, they’ve got to make sure they’re getting troops to where they need to go. Now that would be complicated. I’m assuming that would be a complicated task in these circumstances.

But as part of the review that we will do, that [looking at deployment of troops] will be included.

I think what has been lost over the course of the week is that we rely on volunteers.

This event was not predicted and in this event those volunteer resources may not be at the level they need to be.

What we see is people looking after each other, people who aren’t registered volunteers going out, conducting rescues providing care and support that shouldn’t be seen as a negative. That should be seen as a positive. But I believe it’s been lost in the media over the course of the last two weeks.

And it’s sad from my perspective, because from what I’ve seen over the last two weeks has been an incredible spirit in our people have coming together or putting their life on the line to provide that support to get people to safety, to come together and setting up their own community hubs. Making sure that every single member of the community has been looked after that period of time.

NSW SES commissioner Carlene York said during the last flooding event, it had been difficult to get ADF resources and work had been done since then to remove red tape to accessing and deploying them.

We’ve very much been working with the government to get rid of that red tape. We need to be a fast moving, responsive, professional organisation that I think the SES are. And I think we can always improve on it and it would be good to have a look at those circumstances as well in any review.

But she said some of the criticism of the rescue efforts had been unfair.

Community members have put their hand up without payment to risk their lives to help the community ... We’ve got great equipment now, it’s improved over the years and you know, this event was [handled] better than the last event and the next event will be better.

>>

Attention is now focused on the clean-up following NSW’s devastating floods.

Two recovery centres, in addition to six operating in the state’s north, will be opened in the Hawkesbury-Nepean area to provide access to multiple government agencies for those seeking support and assistance.

Resilience NSW Metropolitan Sydney director Dean Betts is co-ordinating the task while deputy police commissioner Mal Lanyon has been charged with the same role for the northern rivers disaster.

Prime minister Scott Morrison declared a national emergency in NSW late on Friday, allowing the federal government to access stockpiled resources and remove red tape in terms of business and welfare support.

A further four COVID-19 deaths and 5192 new cases have been reported in Victoria, as a mandatory vaccination deadline passes in the state.
The cases include 3434 from rapid antigen tests and 1758 from PCR lab tests, the health department confirmed on Sunday.

The number of Victorians in hospital has grown by 20 to 195. Of those, 25 are in intensive care and eight are on ventilation.

Active cases in the state remain steady at 40,606.

Victoria has 62.5 per cent of adults vaccinated with three doses, as mandatory jab rules come into effect for key workers.

After being pushed back, the new deadline has passed for aged care, disability, emergency service, meat processing, quarantine and food distribution workers to get their third jab by 11.59pm on Saturday.

It means these workers - including contractors, volunteers and students on placement - must have received a third dose to attend work or hold a valid exemption.

Healthcare workers who received their first jab before September 12 are also now required to have their third dose.

Meanwhile, a new late-night, weekend-long cultural event has been unveiled in a bid to entice more locals and tourists into Melbourne after two lockdown-plagued years.

Art After Dark Melbourne, inspired by Europe's Night of Museums, will offer a program of free and paid experiences from May 13 to 15 across the city's leading galleries, museums and other cultural institutions.

The Arts Centre Melbourne, Federation Square, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, State Library of Victoria and Melbourne Museum will participate and remain open until 1am for the program's first two days.

Victorian Creative Industries Minister Danny Pearson said the event would draw tens of thousands of visitors into the CBD in a prospective boon for its night-time economy.
"There'll be no early bedtime for our creative institutions that weekend," he told reporters on Sunday, the third day of Melbourne's annual Moomba festival.
"We know that the night-time economy has suffered through COVID. This is going to absolutely zhoosh up Melbourne."

The full Art After Dark program will be released at a later date.

NT COVID-19 update 13 March 2022
There were 151 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the NT in the 24 hours to 8pm on 12 March 2022.
Of these, 129 were positive cases from a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT).

There were
105 cases recorded in the Top End region,
17 in Central Australia,
three in East Arnhem,
seven in the Big Rivers region
and 19 are under investigation.

There are currently 26 patients in hospital, with seven patients requiring oxygen. There are two patients in ICU.

The number of active cases in the NT is 1,817.

Public health measures
To slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community and reduce the rate of transmission, the following public health measures are in place across the NT:

Masks must be worn in high-risk settings including hospitals, GP clinics, remote health clinics, renal facilities, aged care facilities, family violence shelters, sobering up shelters, homeless shelters, corrections facilities and disability facilities. Disability support workers need to wear a mask when undertaking home-services.
Masks must also be worn in airports and on flights, in line with federal requirements.
It is highly recommended that all people aged 12 years and over wear a mask when physical distancing cannot be applied
The Territory Vaccine Pass.
COVID-19 vaccination
It’s important everyone aged 16 years and over has their booster dose. Three doses of the vaccine significantly reduces your risk of getting really sick from COVID-19 and will help to protect you against any future strains of the virus.

You can have your booster, three months after your second dose. If you have had COVID-19, you can get vaccinated as soon as you have recovered.

Protect your children against COVID-19 by getting them vaccinated. All children aged five years and over should get the COVID-19 vaccine.

The COVID-19 vaccine is available at NT Health Vaccination Centres, participating GP clinics, respiratory clinics and Aboriginal health clinic
COVID-19 testing
Everyone should get tested for COVID-19 if showing symptoms. A number of NT Rapid Antigen Testing and Distribution Points have been established.

To reduce the risk of COVID-19 spreading in our communities, it is important for everyone to follow all health directions:

* If you have symptoms, stay away from others and get tested for COVID-19
* Wash your hands with soap and water and use hand sanitiser regularly
* Do not go to work if you feel sick
* Maintain a physical distance of 1.5 metres where possible.

On Sunday, the health ministry reported six deaths from Auckland, the hardest-hit region, as well as one in the Waikato and another in Rotorua.

The country's death toll stands at 113.
A third of those deaths, 37, occurred in the past 10 days during the Omicron wave.

While Sunday's daily case numbers were the lowest this month, hospitalisations grew again to a nationwide record of 896.

Officials reported 14,494 new community cases on Sunday, though doubt surrounds the accuracy of that number after a switch to home testing.

15 March 2022 NT COVID-19 update

There were 295 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the Northern Territory in the 24 hours to 8pm on 14 March 2022. Of these, 277 were positive cases from a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT).

There were 210 cases recorded in the Top End region, 33 in Central Australia, 12 in East Arnhem, 13 in the Big Rivers region, one in the Barkly region and 26 are under investigation.

There are currently 31 patients in hospital, with seven patients requiring oxygen. There are two patients in ICU.

The number of active cases in the NT is 1,664.

The COVID-19 vaccine is available at NT Health Vaccination Centres, participating GP clinics, respiratory clinics and Aboriginal health clinics.

16/3/2022 NSW

NSW Health is today reporting the deaths of five people with COVID-19; three men and two women.

One person was aged in their 30s, one person was in their 60s, one person was in their 70s and two people were in their 80s.

Of the three people who died over the age of 65,
one person had received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine
and two people had received two doses. Older age is a significant risk factor for serious illness and death for COVID-19, particularly when combined with significant underlying health conditions.

The person in their 60s who died had not been vaccinated and significant underlying health conditions.

The person in their 30s who died had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and had significant underlying health conditions.

One person was from south western Sydney,
one person was from Western Sydney,
one person was from the Central Coast,
one person was from the Northern Rivers
and one person was from Wollongong.

This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,996.

There are currently 1,016 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, including 36 people in intensive care, 15 of whom require ventilation.

NSW Health advises that about 10,000 positive rapid antigen tests (RATs) registered with Service NSW by people between Sunday 13 March and Monday 14 March are included in today's numbers following a data processing issue.

These positive RATs from Sunday and Monday artificially inflate the cases being reported today for the 24 hours to 4pm yesterday (Tuesday).

There were 30,402 positive test results notified in the 24 hours to 4pm yesterday. This includes 22,748 positive RATs, with about 10,000 of those from Sunday and Monday.

There were 7,654 positive PCR results returned from a total of 48,987 PCR tests. PCR tests results were not affected by the data processing issue.

The data processing issue, which has now been resolved, only affected reporting of cases. All of these cases were still connected to clinical care as per normal processes with positive COVID-19 results.

Following further investigation, 8 COVID-19 cases detected by PCR tests have been excluded and 367 cases previously reported as RAT-positive have been confirmed as PCR-positive cases, bringing the total number of cases detected by PCR tests in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 999,189.

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) reporting update - 16 March 2022

NSW Health advises that about 10,000 positive rapid antigen tests (RATs) registered with Service NSW by people between Sunday 13 March and Monday 14 March are included in today's numbers following a data processing issue.

These positive RATs from Sunday and Monday artificially inflate the cases being reported today for the 24 hours to 4pm yesterday (Tuesday).

There were 30,402 positive test results notified in the 24 hours to 4pm yesterday. This includes 22,748 positive RATs, with about 10,000 of those from Sunday and Monday.

16/3/2022 BREAKDOWN BY AGE
16mar2022-age-breakdown-of-cases-nsw.png

17/3/2022 NSW
Across NSW, more than 95 per cent of people aged 16 and over have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 94.5 per cent have received two doses to Tuesday 15 March 2022.
Of children aged 12 to 15, 83.5 per cent have received a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 79.1 per cent have received two doses.
Of children aged 5 to 11, 48.6 per cent have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Of people aged 16 plus, 57.6 per cent have now received a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
This represents 61.5 per cent of the eligible population that received their second dose more than three months ago.

NSW Health is today reporting the deaths of five women with COVID-19.

Three women were aged in their 70s and two women were aged in their 90s.

Of the five women, three had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and two were unvaccinated. Older age is a significant risk factor for serious illness and death for COVID-19, particularly when combined with significant underlying health conditions.

Two women were from south western Sydney, one woman was from western Sydney, one woman was from the Central Coast and one woman was from the Port Macquarie region.

NSW Health expresses its sincere condolences to their loved ones.

This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 2,001.

There are currently 1,036 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, including 34 people in intensive care, 17 of whom require ventilation.

There were 20,087 positive test results notified in the 24 hours to 4pm yesterday – including 12,348 positive rapid antigen tests (RATs) and 7,739 positive PCR tests. The 7,739 positive PCR results were returned from a total of 47,495 PCR tests.

There has now been a total of 523,822 positive RATs recorded since reporting began on 13 January 2022.

Following further investigation, 26 COVID-19 cases detected by PCR tests have been excluded and 717 cases previously reported as RAT-positive have been confirmed as PCR-positive cases, bringing the total number of cases detected by PCR tests in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,007,619.

The latest data report up until 12 March shows reported cases of COVID-19 increased in NSW, while hospital and intensive care unit (ICU) admissions for people with COVID-19 stabilised during the previous three weeks after declining.

Most cases continue to be identified by rapid antigen test (RAT), particularly in regional areas.

The Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) is currently the dominant COVID-19 variant of concern circulating in the NSW community. Both main sub-lineages of the Omicron variant (BA.1 and BA.2) are circulating in NSW, with the proportion of BA.2 increasing in recent weeks.
