Clear Nails

Why do they get clear nails, and do all hypos have clear nails? Any input will help,

Clear Nails is how the HYPO GENE is displayed through the Bearded Dragon's species visually.

**** There is no albino gene reportedly hatched in Pogonas.... That have hatched in captivity... Rumor reports of hets caught in the wild or WC ones but none survived for more than a few weeks. Dont know if the gene was T- or T+......

im not to sure about that. hypo can also be part of thier skin.
the latin prefix hypo has to do with "under", "below" or "less than usual".

i think with beardies, the "less than usual" part is the pigmentation. im pretty sure hypo beardies have clear fingernails and are usually light colored. they are not albinos, just lacking pigment.

This person you quoted was not correct on Pogonas genetics.

There have not been any true leucistic bearded dragons, to date. They call very lightly patterened, light colored, white appearing dragons, "Snows", "Marketed Leucistics" "Ice Dragons". They are simply light colored hypomelanistic dragons.

This also goes for "Pastel". Many "Pastel" dragons are simply light variants of hypomelanism, and those would have clear nails. Some "Pastel" dragons may be normal phase with very light color and those would have black nails.

The only way you can correctly determine a dragon's genetics is to have parents and grandparents. You have to trace bloodlines back to determine what genetics you are dealing with or you would have to do genetic testing on that particular dragon.

A normal looking dragon may have the genes to produce hypomelanistic or translucent offspring if bred with another dragon with the same heterozygous traits. It gets complicated. If you google around there are some great articles on the internet.

Just trying to give you a better understanding on this issue. Many breeders use fancy terms to sell dragons. It can be very confusing if you are shopping for a baby. :mrgreen:
