Chat Window...

I think it'd be cool to have a chat window, so we could see who's online and could directly talk to them rather than wait for posts back and forth, etc. Just an idea.

We should! There is one on another forum I'm on, and it's fun to randomly talk to everyone.

Yea! It can get crazy! Many conversations going at one time!
I pulled my Mom into a chat room with me once and we laughed till we cried! By the time she answered or asked a question, we were 10 subjects new by then! :mrgreen:

She just could not type fast enough! I don't know if they still do divided screens anymore...but this one was a four square, divided strange thing. Very fun, and different. You would move to a different box for that conversation...made my Mom dizzy lol

Now it is just line after line and still funny.

I think it would be a blast to all meet at a specified time etc. I wonder if the bandwidth could handle it??? LOLOL

There were some problems having the "chat window." Some members got out of hand with bad language, etc so it was removed. It only takes a few to ruin it for everyone. If enough members are interested, perhaps Alex would reconsider it, Alex?

If enough are interested, but it has to be a lot, otherwise it will end up just not getting used. Also, I'd have to look in setting up all the software for it again. When we upgraded, I didn't bother to install the components for it again. The chat server is actually pretty complicated on the back end.

Is there a way to sensor the chat? Like, if someone were to cuss, it would just have *********** there instead?

Not easily. And there is often ways around most censors.

The problem wasn't really the language. That did get out of hand a little, though. It was that no one used it. I went through all the work of getting it going because people said they wanted it, but then it died after a few weeks of semi-regular use. The issue is that it requires people to be in there all the time. No one seems to stay there if it's empty. And so, every time someone joined, it was empty, and they left. Unless people coordinated a very specific group chat "event", it didn't get used. And the group chat events just weren't happening after the initial novelty wore off.

I personally, have never seen a chatroom work on a forum (I moderate several forums and I actually run the IRC Chat server for one of them, no one uses it). Like beardie said, unless you coordinate an event, people usually come in, see the place is empty, and leave.

What I've seen work better than a chatroom, is simply creating a thread in the Off Topic section that is for random chit chat. It tends to have a better flow because people can come in and out at their leisure and can easily catch up on what's been talked about. Even if no one is currently in the thread, there is still some history you can go back and read, as opposed to walking into a totally empty chatroom.

Yeah... the Off Topic forum (at the bottom of the "bearded dragon" forums section) does fairly well for the chit chat. I kow it's not the same as real time chatting, but it works well for when there's a delay in people being there at the same time.

How about a chat box that was constantly at the top of the page? That is what they have on another forum I'm on, and you can't help but read it when you look through posts.
