... how old is that chicken? and where'd you get a freakin' feeder chicken from?
She is looking so good! I didn't realize bredli's had some arboreal tendencies!? Do they spend a lot of time coiled up like a GTP?

Awesome! Nice photos! I will have to keep a chick in mind for my snakes, you just can't find them but in the spring around here!

The chicken is a couple days old. Normally she takes 1day-ers. Don't you have shops that sell chickens to O/S ? We can walk into a meat produce store and they will sell you frozen day old to large roosters from as little as 50c to as much as 20dollars for a rooster. :D And they are from the morelia species, same as GTP,coastals,RSP etc. so there semi aboreal, you can keep adults in 4x2x2 tanks (like beardies) or go for 4ft high and 2ft wide/long.. they wil;l normally coil around like a GTP when resting.. though you supply hides they will prefer to lay in the open like that. The hot end branches still get to 32c (thats like um 90-95c)

Well, sorry you guys don't get exotics from South America, Africa, and Asia.

We have almost the opposite rules. You can't keep native species in most U.S. states (to discourage wild catching). Of course except for like Florida and Hawaii the U.S. is too cold for released/escaped exotics to survive.

lol, you get 5years jail or nearly 2k fine for wild catching here.. we are on license.. so nearly impossible to buy a wildcaught..

Like I said, most U.S. states don't allow native species to be kept as pets with exemptions for the species already common in the pet trade with captive breeding populations(like corn snakes, king snakes, milk snakes, rat snakes).

Wild catching(even the species you are allowed to keep a captive breed specimen of) is illegal. The penalties aren't quite as harsh as they are there, but still illegal none the less.

Since we don't have to have a license to own a(non venomous) reptile that says what reptiles we own, it would be really easy to wild catch one without getting caught.

Another reason behind the no wilds laws is to keep people from catching venomous species as "pets" without jumping through the legal hoops to legally keep a venomous species.

Actually, keeping exotics can vary greatly by state to state or even county or city. The city next to us supposedly had a ban on all herps. I have tried to find more info on it, but the only thing I can get is from a police officer there. I find it hard to believe that you can't have a reptile, turtle, snake, etc when there is a petco that sells them all... but, who knows.

I believe some states, at least cities, require permits for certain animals, other areas require you to register/tag your animals. Just like some metro areas limit you to two dogs or two cats.. seems silly to me, but I guess I 'get it'...

In Aus you can only keep 2dogs/2cats.. except country folk will keep more as they don't need to register them.. Venomous snakes you have to do handling courses etc.. two written signatures of people who think your ready and you must be over 18...

I've heard of cities and states with bans on certain very large constrictors like retics and anacondas, and on venomous, but never on all snakes.

I've also heard of bans on monitors, but not like all lizards.

I'm not 100% sure what the regs on venomous are as I've never been interested in one, but I've heard the Federal govt has regulations on them(even if your state or city doesn't have additional ones). From what I understand you have to register your number and types of snakes with the govt, as well as having a Dr. sign a certification that he is keeping antivenom for your type of snake to administer it if someone gets bitten by your snake.

 Anti-venom costs over a grand and has short life span, its not worth it. I guess for venomous snakes in America it would be, since Australia has the top 10 dangerous elapids.. Monitors can be kept on a normal licence here, but most people wouldn't sell a large monitor to a kid.

Most States and Cities as well as the feds don't have a restriction on monitors, but I've heard of some that do.

As to native venomous snakes...

Yeah most of our native venomous are hemotoxic pit vipers.Rattlesnakes, Cotton Mouths, and Copperheads(copperhead isn't deadly on a non allergic adult)

The coral snake (found like south of Interstate 10) is the only neurotoxic elapid. They are extremely small, and reclusive, and dosile.

There is the neurotoxic Mojave Rattlesnake out west that is officially the most fatal U.S. species, although the Diamondback and Timber rattlers as well as Cottonmouths are generally fatal or require amputation if left untreated.

Copperheads are only dangerous to children and people who have an allergic reaction and you will not get antivenom as long as your vital signs are normal (although you should still go to the hospital for treatment and some antibiotics as a hemotoxic wound is prone to infection)

Personally I'm not interested in owning a venomous snake as I have slow reflexes that are like the opposite of cat like reflexes. If I owned one it wouldn't be a matter of IF I'd get bit it would be WHEN and how bad.

The only time I ever had to handle a venomous snake a 6 ft long timber rattler had wrapped itself around a guy who was sunbathing's leg.

Anything that would safely blow the snake away where there is no chance it could strike would (like a 12 ga) would blow the guys leg off, so as I was the only one with any experience handling any kind of snake I got volunteered to grab it.

I had someone keep it distracted to the front while I grabbed it from behind. after I got it uncoiled from the guy's leg it coiled around my arm where I couldn't safely uncoil it while holding the head, and no one else would help me, so I had to decapitate it with a knife unfortunately.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
