No, unfortunately it can't pass through glass, that's why they need the bulb. =/
From what I've read they live 5-8 yrs in the wild. In captivity they live 8-14 yrs (but it's unually closer to 12 max).

UVA is visible to reptiles and can pass through windows, so the natural light might help things look more like they should for him. They also seem to enjoy a nice view :)
