I would be very cautious with spraying the ants with anything. If they get sprayed and then crawl in the viv they will bring whatever it is in with them and if your beardie eats any they will ingest the spray. Try to find where they get in and spray them with something that will kill them fast...

Sounds like your doing what you need to be. I still kinda wonder if he couldn't use a little more UVB, I mean the combination of being 10" away and out of the viv 4 hrs a day. Plus from what you said hes only awake 9 hrs a day and if 4 of that is out of viv then hes only getting 5 hrs of UVB...

How old is your UVB and how close is he to it in his normal basking spot? Thats one of the main reasons a beardie would start getting less active, although normally they would start eating less as well. I've never had a corn but I know they are good 1st time snakes. I'd go for the ball python tho. They are very hardy and very easy to care for. They very rarely bite and are easier to hold since they don't squirm nearly as much. So if your into holding your snake a ball python might be a better...
