Hey guys I had two of these bulbs that I bought cheap a while back and I haven't used them. I wanted to be clear, what exactly is the problem with these bulbs? I know they are not recommended but are they okay to use?

Hello there,

The repti-glos are generally disliked in terms of a UVB bulb due to their inconsistant, and often poor output ratings. Basically they say 10.0 but you are not going to get that output.
Furthermore with repti-glo bulbs there is a link with optical discomfort. Many dragons will shy away from the light, closing one or both eyes. Others will even develop infections or crust their eyes over.

The easiest site to refere you to as for tangable proof is http://www.uvguide.co.uk.

Im sure other members will be able to voice their own personal catastrophies with reptiglos.
The most telling results you will find online are here. On this forum.
If you type Reptiglo into the forum search i cannot count the number of posts you will find on sick, lethargic dragons, or dragons with optical issues resulting from the use of these bulbs.
You will also be able to read the reports of a much improved dragon after being advised to change their bulb.

Basically, repti-glos are not the best bulb, and CAN pose health risks.
To me its not worth the risk to save a few quid, and Im a student - I know how it feels to live off noodles for weeks!

All the best.

.Got nando when he was three months he is now nearly six months. He was about 8 inches long and 60grams.I noticed with in a couple of weeks after getting him first i thought he was not eating because of relocation stress. He was not basking a lot he was not moving a lot and then started to close his eyes.I did have a couple of other problems with my viv which didnt help. This is how i found this site so after taking the reptiglo out and putting in an mvb ,sortin out the other little problems all is good. Now at six months hes 17 inches and 190 grams and still growing and imo that is a big improvement

i have been using reptiglo 10.0 fluro lights for my baby with no troubles (my reptisun blew up after 4 days use in the very beginning). Reptisun 10 are hard to get here in australia parts where i live.

It just needs to be strictly 10" away from basking area and put a bright basking light right next to it, and have nothing interesting on top of your viv to make the bd look up. If you follow this then most likely you'll have no problems,

I think reptisun 10s do have better uv and a much bigger margin for error in terms of setup and placing.

My baby is very active, growing an inch a week. No eye probs or pooping or any problems at all. So i am sticking with my reptiglo 10 as i have no problems with it.

You got to recognise that in australia, the big franchise pet shops in westfields shopping centres, petbarn (big pet store franchise), kellyville pet store (biggest pet store in NSW australia) and specialised reptile stores like "extreme pets", They do not stock Reptisuns 10.0! They stock Reptiglos, yes all of them stock reptiglos in 2.0 5.0 10.0 in every size you want and a few no name brands ones. The specialised store had one 3 foot reptisun 5.0 which was there since 2 years ago and is covered in dust. You ask to order reptisun 10.0 and they say they cant get it in.
You can order reptisun 5.0 on the net for about $40usd, but no 10.0.
Someone asked where to get a reptisun 10.0 on the forums of australias most popular reptile site, no one knew where they had them in stock and eventually he got one of another member who lived interstate.

So without a doubt i am sure most beardie pets in australia are under a reptiglo tube. Just by the fact that i goto alot of franchised pet stores and can see their supply of reptiglo tubes sell

With respect I dont think availiability should be the deciding factor. Im from england and suffer from a similar issue. All the stores here stock are repti-glos aswell.
To hell with that tbh.
I order my bulbs at great expense online. Ive even had a MegaRay shipped across the world.
Im also a poor law student, so I understand the aggrivation at the extra expense. But when it comes to my babies, why take the risk?
This is, of course, just my oppinion.

i am just saying that reptiglo work well for me.

Beardies are from australia and if thousands of people in australia use reptiglo without much complaints at all in australia, i don't believe all the negative views are warranted. just use it the correct way and most likely you will have no problems.
money is nothing when keeping a beardie lol i spend at least $20usd per week on crickets for my one baby as i wont breed them :puke:

Out of the 100s threads about reptiglos, only about 5 people have replied that it is fine when they use it. But in australia alone you can imagine how many 1000s of bulbs are being used and with no real problems to our beardies (our aussie reptile forums have not a whelp of any problems with reptiglos)

I just think that yes reptisuns are better but reptiglo is not the end of the world either.

I personally would only recomend the ReptiGlo 8 if u are going to go with ReptiGlo. These are the pnly ReptiGlo's that show NO problems as of yet. Otherwise I would get the ReptiSun 10. I use the ReptiSun 10 because I believe it is better & have had no issues thus far.

Hello,

I do have to comment on this. There have been more than 5 people who have complained about the Reptiglo 10 flourescent tube bulbs & lots more who have had problems & complications with them who have switched to another light & seen all of the difference in the world.
I am on the boards alot, & am on Aussie boards & UK boards & people have complained about them on there as well. While it is true that if used properly, meaning, mounting them at least 10 inches away with a bright white light directly beside it they should be fine. However, what is not being mentioned is that it is a very poor quality of UVB light. This light emits LESS UVA which means it is much harder on their eyes than the Reptiglo 8 & the Reptisun 5 & 10. This light emits low wavelength frequency of UVB, which is very close to UVC emissions. It is not a favorable wavelength for D3 synthesis. They used the incorrect phosphor coating on this bulb which allows the UVC or low wavelength to filter through.
There have been no long term studies on reptiles for prolonged exposure to radiation. So, I do not recommend the use of the at all until they fix the problem & there has been enough testing done on them to deem them safe.
There have been an increasing amount of dragons getting metabolic bone disease early on. That is telling us that most of the lights out there are not emitting adequate enough UVB emissions to help maintain bone strength. Alot of times, it wont affect them until a little later on into adulthood while other times, it will affect them early on as a juvenile.
The Arcadia D3 12% is a great light & should be able to be found in Australia. The Reptisun 10 can be found in parts of Australia though & can be ordered online.

Hey,

I wish I'd read all this before my mum ordered my beardie's new light. She got the Repti Glo 10.0 and my beardie is not a happy boy at all.
At least one eye is constantly shut, if not both and he's always trying to hide from the light. I came in today after Uni to find my boy squashed behind his rocks, with some plants over his face and eyes shut to get away from the light. He was cold cause he wasn't near his basking light either and he's in a big tank :(. He also stopped eating and is very lethargic. He won't pick up until he's out the tank and wrapped up in his warm fleece blanket. I'll be getting the Repti Sun 10.0 tomorrow.

So to anyone thinking of using the Repti Glo 10.0 to save some money? Don't. Chances are your beardie will end up very unhappy and could end up being very sick.
