after owning bearded dragons for over 7 years, you go through trial and error with several different feeders. I have used crickets,mealworms,superworms,roaches,butterworms,silkworms,hornworms,zebraworms,waxworms....about 4 different species of roaches. the ALL TIME best feeder hands down is roaches. Over my experience with all kinds of feeders, i found ROACHES the most beneficial for me and the dragon. With a higher meat to shell ratio than crickets, less smell, no jumping, less disease prone than crickets, will survive a hot summer with zero die offs, will breed easily, has live birth....the list goes on. Roaches are great once you get a colony up and running, you will not have to buy another feeder! These guys breed quickly depending on species. I currently have a dubia colony breeding for a month. I started with 200 nymphs and 6 adult pairs and already have a bunch of little guys running around. They do not smell and are easily maintained. Now, as a second feeder but more expensive...it has to be hornworms. A low fat diet if you want to call them due to their low fat ratio, these guys are green stimulators that will get the most stubborn to eat. one monster horn is like eating 5-7 crickets so they get full on 2-3 instead of feeding 15 crickets. They are however more expensive so a supplement feeder is suggested. Superworms is what i feed while my colony is breeeding which are also beneficial being higher in fat and less of a shell than mealworms. I have learned over 7 years that mealworms are absolutely a NON feeder as well as waxworms. Some say they are good as a treat but they can be addictive like giving candy to a child. Hope this helps !!
