Hi all. I'm new to owning a beardie. I rescued the one I have and I notice these bumps or spots on his back legs can you please tell me if this is normal and what are they???
Hi there....those are femoral pores. They are larger in male beardies and used to announce their presence to females in the wild. EDIT....I should have added that they excrete a waxy substance, that is what does it.
Oh thank you soooo very much for getting back to me so quickly. I love this little guy so I just wanna make sure he's good and I'm doing the right things. I'll post a pic of his face and body.
Thank you again.
Not sure why they upload sideways. Sorry about that. But here they are. He's atleast 6 years old. I'm not sure at all.
You're welcome. ! He looks great visually, someone took good care of him and he probably has good genetics. Bright eyed, not too fat and not thin. Hopefully he'll be with you for another 6 years.
Thanx I love him. But actually he wasn't cared for very good at all. He was on a steady diet of blueberries. He actually only got 4-5 every few days THATS IT. That's why I took him. He was very skinny. I have had him for almost two months now and I have him on crickets every day and super worms and horn worms as treats. He also gets a salad everyday with bok Choy, apples, cucumber, carrots collard greens and dandelion greens. He has shed twice since being in my care and now looks totally different. He's a snuggle bunny. I fell asleep with him wrapped in a towel on my chest and woke in the morning and thought omg he's gone. And no he was resting his face on my cheek and fast asleep lol. He also lived his whole life with one standard household bulb. So I put in a 50 watt basking light to start and have a 75 watt to upgrade to. I didn't want to switch him to very high heat right away as he's not used to it at all. He is in a 40 gallon tank now but I just purchased a 110 gallon tank for him so will be putting all the proper lights in it so he has the best chance. Today he was sitting in his tank with his mouth open. " it usually means he wants a drink from the syringe lol he's spoiled " but today I noticed a red spot in his mouth. So I thought since you helped me so much already I'd ask you if you know what it is? Or if it's normal? I'm a little worried I'll post some pics. Thanks for everything.
Oh, I thought you just picked him up . At any rate, he did well [ good genetics ] despite his neglect. And yes, I see a red spot but it's unclear and I'm not sure what it might be. You might p.m Tracie [ Drache613 ] who is one of the mods. to get her thoughts on it. He might have just bitten something that was hard and jabbed him.....so maybe keep an eye on it for a week to see if it changes at all. In the meantime try to find an vet that as lots of experience with reptiles in case you need to take him in.
One more thing.....although it's sweet that he's a snuggle bug, be careful of falling asleep with him. Latst year [ or so ] a poster wrote a very sad ending to her beardie's thread in the " bearde tale " forums. You guessed it....she fell asleep with him and rolled over + smothered her adult dragon. So even if it's unlikely, it's possible to hurt or kill them that way.
OMG that's so sad. Yes it only happened once and now will never again. Thanx again for all your help I will message her and see if she knows anything. You have been a huge help.
I am just dropping by to say hi. I am so happy to have found this forum - my new dragon is just a baby and I know that I would have been freaking out if I saw those spots on his belly/legs and now I know it's normal - so thanks for posting the good pics and thanks to AHBD for the answers! Of course, mine will probably turn out to be a she and not get the spots - LOL!
Hi ya I was so thankful for all AHBD help. This is a great site for sure. People seem so helpful and answers your questions fast which is great when you are worried about your baby. Good luck with yours and if you have any questions ask, someone will help you.
