In concentrated form, water crystals are toxic....never feed animals dry watercrystals. Also, as anyone who has ever let dry water crystals fall down a drain will know, they do pose an impaction risk. My kitchen sink still doesn't drain properly...
this is the most compelling argument against the use of these in the cage. Beardie licks a couple tiny crystals up, no prob. Tiny crystals get a LOT bigger in its stomach, and while they may do no harm themselves, they can start an impaction of other things while they're there.
another thing i'd say is you're basically simply delaying the inevitable. Sand is sand is sand. It'll still house the bacterias whether you use water crystals to attempt to absorb some of it or not. In fact, you'll probably end up digging all the water crystals out thinking you're doing well until you realise that they only absorb the water from the urates and leave all sorts of baddies behind. It's like Carbon in a fish tank filter. It doesn't really do anything after the break in cycle of the tank. It just makes people more lazy, trusting in fresh carbon to hold them over between water changes.
the quoted reason above would be the biggie for me though. The second is just me talking too much
