Turning black

The sides of my new bearded dragon are turning black, just got him and a female that have been in the same tank, moved them to a bigger tank with some more stuff and carpet floor, they had mulch, now his sides are turning black

Hi there, can you post pics ? Does he look ill or is it just his color ? Some males are constantly black in the breeding season when they can see a female so it would be best for both dragons to be kept apart. It's also quite stressful generally to keep a female with a male because she has no chance to relax and be left alone with a male to hound her all the time. Since you now have 2 tanks you can put the male back in the other and keep them out of sight of each other.

I wish I could, not enough room to put the 2nd tank inside nor do I have the extra lights, they generally leave each other alone and I usually take them out to roam during the day or stick them in the 2nd tank outside in the sun

A lot of the times like right now the female will lay on top of the mail
