Tengu's great adventures

Hello all!

So, now my BD is 16 months old and she is at 42cm long and 355g. We believe she is fully grown and would like some advice on feeding.

Currently she gets fresh salad every day and 20 L size crickets once a day. Should we now start decreasing the amount of crickets? She LOVES them of course and salad is like a "Do I have to eat it?"

So any advice at the age she is at etc?

Thank you in advance

Awww, wish I could buy Imp some dubia, he'd be eating them the same way. Those are great pics, that's for sure. Well I can't upload pictures anymore. I bought a new printer, got into the wrong page, tried to download the wrong info (was all on a disk) and got this 3rd party company that for $ will check your drivers on the computer. So I deleted those 2 sites from my computer and now I can't download. I'm not a tech kind of person, so have no idea what's wrong. I went to the computer shop to have the cable checked and it works but still can't connect the program to download, so pictures on my camera...I'll have to connect with my brother when I can to see if he knows what's wrong. Sigh...the computer guy told me what to do, but I have Windows 7 and it's not the same, he has a more updated version on the computer in the shop. So that didn't work either.

Imp is now 332g and 17 1/2" so he's continuing to grow weekly but today it was so hot (30C in the hallway, coolest part of my apartment, so even hotter in the living room) that he didn't eat as much as usual. I'm hoping this heat wave goes away, I just wilt in this heat and so do all my dragons. I did get my plants re-potted, though, I'm feeling much better than I was even Wed of last week, so that's good, too. I'm going to miss my babies when I go back to work, that's for sure. They've had a month of Mom being home and having outside time almost all day...

So it was an xray I had, no need for blood work, the fatigue is almost gone, so the puffers are starting to work, plus I'm taking a large dose of echinacea every morning which is helping a great deal. So get the xray results on Wednesday, unless there's something urgent. And I expect to be back to work p/t by Thursday if I'm called that is to arrng the time, that's how it works when you're on short term. So the deal will be 1/2 days Thurs, Fri, then 6 hours Mon-Tues,Wed, then full time after that if I don't relapse. I stay on the puffers for awhile yet, though and take an extra pill for the diabetes (talked to my specialist on Friday) as the steroids in the puffer, which is what takes away the inflammation in my lungs, caused my blood sugar to go up 3 points. Now it's back down to almost normal.

If this heat wave continues (it went on for 4 months last year), I'll be glad to go to work as I don't have air conditioning in my apartment. I'm going to move the timers on the dragons lights to earlier in the am and earlier in the afternoon, they'll still get sunlight but I'll have the lights off 2 hours earlier than they go off now, I do that every summer, as it just gets too hot in the living room, even with a fan running all day.

I hate the heat, I feel awful when it's hot, but what can you do? I can't afford air conditioning and would have it in my bedroom only, too many lights in the living room for a unit there. Maybe next summer, I'll see.

And I still have mice, killed one the other day (have traps under the stove) but found one running in front of the tanks earlier today, so now have to put more traps out, need to get some raw pumpkin seeds as they love them, so hope to clear them out soon. It's been almost 2 years that I've had mice and I'm getting sick and tired of it all. I wish there was an easier way to kill them, but I can't fumigate, would harm the dragons and they'd still come in anyway. I need to sanitize my place, will have to look into that, means moving all the furniture, including all the tanks away from the wall and not sure what the procedure is. I'm so sick of the darned rodents. Wish they'd just leave me alone. I have nothing out that would even interest them food wise, it's all put away in the fridge or in glass containers, so have no idea why they continue to come in here, so frustrating.

Say hi to Princess and yes, it takes hardly any time for them to change their ways,, when their owner loves them. I'm glad she didn't get away from you today, even though I'll bet she would have enjoyed a run around. Have you considered a leash?

Computers........... I feel your pain and I am self taught because of photography really. They can be a real pain! My mum is always sending me mails asking what to do etc. Windows 7 is most peoples favorite version of windows. I have windows 10 which i like but windows 8 was a NIGHTMARE!!!!! In fact when you get windows 10 you have an option to switch to windows 7 if you don't like it :D

Glad to know you are feeling better :D

I cant imagine heat in Canada lol air con is a must here in Japan. This is my reason for not having another beardie yet because the breakers wouldn't take it as I have said. I did see a baby beardie yesterday with a perfect tail and very alert. I really wanted him/her? and I could see it wasn't fed enough. Easy to spot when they jump to the roof to see if its food. But yeh air con is very useful for princess if the room is hot, it cools the room down making it comfy in her tank (so spoilt) she is currently out of tank under her lamp watching me! I would love to know what they are thinking

MICE? doesn't the landlord deal with that or is it your place? Must be something to do with dragons. Maybe a smell we cant smell? or food smell that they can smell?

A leash.....  I tried that once and she was PISSED to say the least. Sher hates it but now she is a big girl I may get a ferret one which would be comfy. I think after a while of wearing it she would be alright. Its like anything new for them, they HATE it at first and look at it like it is trying to eat them!!

Ah well talk soon and glad you liked the shots :)

I live on the 3rd floor in a condo that I'm renting. The mice problem has been in these building for years, they get into the walls, the buildings (there are 3 in the complex) are treated monthly but only go so far. I'm not sure what brought them in, as I've lived here for 10 years, 6 years in this 1 bedroom apartment and only started getting them 2 years ago. I guess once one gets in, it leaves scent markers for any that follow. I have sticky traps all over the place and normally catch whatever one gets in, but I think the one I saw last night got out off the balcony, either way there are more traps laid out now. I don't get many anymore, thank goodness and they can't get into the dragons tanks, thanks goodness but it's annoying to see one.

I'm feeling much better, I vacuumed today, so the house looks better. Tomorrow is wash the floor day and Wed is to the doc to get the xrays, hopefully it shows nothing and I can get back to work. I got a call today and the plan is 4 hours on Thursday 4-8p (end of my shift) and same Friday, then if that works out 6 hours Monday, Tuesday, 2-8p and then full time next Wednesday. I'm hoping that works out because I find it's getting boring being at home now. I love being able to have the dragons out all day, but I really don't have alot to do at home right now. Have to go out for a walk tomorrow, see how I manage that.

Oh Tengu, you have to tell your daddy what you're thinking LOL Yes, I very much wonder what mine are thinking all the time. Imp is easy to figure out, but Cierra is another matter altogether. Maybe because they're female? I find the males so much easier to figure out.

Yesterday when I repotted all the plants I'd bought, Cierra was out watching me the whole time. I had to take her in because she likes to eat vermiculite, why? I have no idea LOL

I have a friend that's going to try to fix the computer re: downloading pictures, on the weekend. If that doesn't work, will have to connect with my brother, he's the techie in the family.

I did go to Window 10 last year and hated it, so went back to Windows 7 and will stay there for as long as I can. I guess there were just too many bugs in Windows 10, must have gone to it too early, but still, I like Windows 7 so will leave it there for now. My techie brother told me to stick to Windows 7 until it's not supported anymore.

So you found another baby and yes, they're never fed enough at pet shops, no matter how much they try. Babies need LOTS of food. Imp ate my 2 whole dubia colonies. I just checked them today and there are babies growing but not alot, so it will be months before I can use them again. I think I have too many males, so will have to check at the end of the summer, to see what's there. There are hard to differentiate until they mature and grow their wings. If there are too many, Imp will have lots to eat.

hello :)

Glad to know you are better :)

Mice sound a nightmare!!! arghgh and on that subject do you or have you ever fed mice to your beardies?

Females are definitely much harder to understand  I do know that Tengu is having a monster shed and shes not happy! Bath time very soon for her!

Hows the computer? Windows 10 is great :) if you are used to windows 7 i can understand why you wouldn't like it. Windows 8.......... HELL

Dubia......... Tengu is a beast and I have had a few babies but she eats the adults to quickly! Time to get another 146 of them and then maybe I will have a chance for them to breed!I did clean them out yesterday though. Loads of poop pellets, so got them all out.

Bust day ahead and it is dam hot here now so air con on and coffee time before printing for canon. OHHHHHHHHHHHHH dam wifi cut out half way through a huge print so it messed up. I was so pissed!!!!!! such a waste of expensive ink :(

I went to work last night and had a very sore mouth, so left early. Went to the doc today and have a mouth virus of all things, so have a rinse to gargle with 4x a day and to call for an appt on Tues if not better. Hoping it all goes away & back to prt-time work on Monday, will have to see.

So mice, never will ever feed a mouse to my dragons. Even though alot do, never agreed with it. It's alot to digest, very fatty & alot of calcium. I'm ok with others feeding a day old pinkie mouse to a dragon who's had eggs, but I feed the mix I made for Imp instead and it gives Cierra the boost she needs.

And all 5 of mine are going through huge sheds and none are very happy about it. So can understand why Tengu isn't pleased either. I've been giving them more baths, but didn't have a chance today with going to the doc and getting the prescription. By the time I got home, they were almost all sleepy. Cierra had a black beard (she's shedding her belly and part of her back) so I snuggled her for a couple of hours. Always works to make her feel better. Now she's sound asleep.

I didn't like Windows 10 because of the way they made picture folders, everyone in one month, could have been my fault but went back to Windows 7 and won't switch until I have to. Windows 10 isn't that much different from Windows 7 anyway. Still can't download pics, still not sure what I did and can't fix it. Was supposed to take my computer to a friend but not seeing anyone with this mouth infection, so that will have to wait. But with the dragons so lethargic right now with all the shedding, I can wait for more pictures

And I know what you mean about printing. I finally got ink for my old printer and when I put the ink in, the printer broke down  So $65 down the drain. So then decided to buy another printer, and still haven't set it up, even though I know how to now. I bought a new one because I have a dedicated small printer just for pictures but it's 10 years old and I can't find ink for it anymore. So bought a good one that prints good pictures and is on wifi, too, which is good. So now can print pics that I've been wanting to print for a year!

Dubia, you're lucky you can buy them. You need 100 females and 30 males that are just dedicated to breeding, so should be in a different tank and don't touch them, just feed them. And don't clean out the poop too much, the babies eat that. I clean out the tanks once a year only. But I do spot cleans if the frash (poop) gets too much. I wish I could buy a few hundred right now, they're Imp's very favourite bugs, but he ate all I had, except for the adults. So you should get sub adults for Princess (almost adults) and leave the adults to breed. Takes 6 mo for a baby grow into an adult, they don't grow fast like crickets do.

I'm very glad it cooled down over here, had 3 days it was so hot, I can't function in heat and only have fans. There's a problem with the electric in my apartment, I guess running 6 UVB lights doesn't help LOL

Good luck with the printer, hope you get it to behave! Big hugs to Princess once her shed is done.

Full grown adult bearded dragons diet should be 80% greens, fruits, and vegtables and 20% insects and worms. Also they should have a mixed diet for instance dont just feed crickets everytime switch it up with hornworms or in my opinion the best are cockroaches. My beardie is almost 2 years old now at 21inches and 500grams. When she turned 1 1/2 i cuz the insects down to 2 or three times a week and much less each feeding. Her schedule is monday i will make a salad with collards mustard or turnip and mix it up throuout the week with some papaya and once a week ill add some carrot. Tuesday ill do the same salad like everyday but with a different green and around 4 oclock when i get home from work i will give her a couple hornworms or 1 big one or a few cockroaches. Wednsday i make a small salad wich she usually doesnt eat anything the 3rd day and then repeat. Like i said im no expert but feeding an adult crickets everyday is a little exsessive the diet should mainly consist of greens and fruits / vegtables. There are plenty of diet articles online that you can look up in google they all will tell you great things. Good luck!! Hi from Sliptornavich.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

So, interesting about the mice. I wasn't going to give her any but I was reading about it and thought maybe you have at some point.

Time of year for shedding? Tengu has a monster shed going on right now  basking, sleeping and repeat.

Ink.......... when I was at Canon the guy said to me "ink is our main business" LOL thats crazy!! It just shows how much profit is in printer ink!

Very interesting info about the roach, thank you for that! I do have a lot of adults so I will get a different box and out them in and eventually get a mix of 100 female to 30 male, and as you say just leave and feed them.

Yeh shes not happy with hugs right now  such a beast!!!!

Mine are ok with hugging, always, no matter what. They just don't have alot of energy right now because of the sheds.

I took Castiel to the pet shop and library today. No-one even noticed that I had a big dragon on my shoulder LOL

Otherwise, resting up, did alot of chores this am and now tired but going to work tomorrow, so have to rest. At least everything is done, they all got their baths and supplements and Imp is in the living room watching TV, he'll stay there until I put him to bed, he never leaves the ramp

hahahah I bet he doesn't!! Tengu loves sitting on her seat typ thing but today she did a monster number 2 :(

No one noticed a huge lizard on your shoulder? Wow! I want to take Tengu to the shops with me. Here they provide a trolley with a pet sheet for any business :)

She was very active today and very cute! I weighed her and she was......... 645g

MONSTER Tengu!!! Vet will not be happy with that but she looks so healthy and happy :) she doesn't get dubia everyday but she does eat a lot of veg and her vitamins, calcium and water is perfectly balanced. Also she was running around today and her belly was not dragging so shes fine. I will keep an eye out for belly dragging and then it is diet time!

I did want to ask you this. I saw a video of a beardie eating fish............ live flapping about in the water fish, is that normal?

Also thinking of getting a cat, now is this wise with a beardie? I have seen some people with cats and beardies but is it something she would get used to after a while but see it as a threat at first?

Oh and I forgot to ask.

She has a lot of shed and it is white now. How long should I wait before oiling her up?  she is pissed at her shedding and I cant blame her!

Give it a week for the shed to come off on her own, but more baths and you can help her with using a soft toothbrush on it. But it it's not off in a week, then it's time to oil her up.

A cat? Well depends on the cat. I tried with a neighbours cat to see but he immediately grabbed one of my beardies by the neck. It's never easy to know with a cat, plus they will constantly jump up on the screen to get into the tank to get to the heat light. I decided that a cat just wouldn't work, with 5 tanks with no tops and being away 11 hours a day when I work. So when I retire, I'm looking into a dog but cats are off the agenda. They really can't be trusted.

I would never give a beardie fish or mice, you never know about parasites. It's not their natural type of food anyway, that's bugs and greens. Some people like to show this kind of thing because they're looking for laughs but not for what's best for their dragons.

Nathaniel is in his hide since before I got up this am...and he's not allowed to brumate in May, so he'll be out of that tomorrow and fed, bathed, supplements, the ususal.

I went to the doc today and got alot of blood tests re: fatigue. He just thinks I have a bad immune system, which I do, and my body is recovering. So I have this week off, see him on Friday for results but sure they'll all be normal, as they always are. I'm back to work, part-time on Monday and glad to start, I'm SO bored. I love my babies but only want to be home because I've chosen to be home, not because I'm sick. I slept 6 hours this afternoon, sometimes this fatigue is crushing. But hopefully I'll be able to stay up during the day, if I get tired, I'll be heading out the door for a walk...

Wow, 645g, that's bigger than any of mine, but then she's a very long dragon, isn't she. And yes, belly dragging on the floor is 1st indication that weight is just too much. She's a very active dragon, too, so that's good. And really, besides reducing bugs, what else can you reduce? Not salad, that's for sure.

I see. I made a note of a week so I will oil her up  still makes me laugh. She is looking very lazy today!

Cat thing is interesting! Hmmmmmm have to think about that.

Yeh, I thought the fish thing was odd. Thought I would ask you about it. Beardie looked very happy about it LOL

Good news about tests etc. Fatigue...... worst thing. Hope you pick up soon :D

She is big right!! 48cm long Maybe she is a little less than 645 now after her business yesterday! But still must be around 635 maybe more. I don't even excessively feed her, she is just a big girl  I sometimes vary when she gets dubia. It is not everyday thats for sure! But she does love her salad :)
and she does love to have a run around hahahahhahahah I love her beard when she runs, looks like she is smiling!

Let her run around as much as she wants, good exercise. And remember muscle is heavier than fat and they need their fat pads nice and full to be in optimum good health. Sweet girl!

Yes, the fatigue knocked me out today, slept for 6 hours, so now it's hard to go to sleep, luckily have nothing to do tomorrow, but visiting a friend tomorrow at 7p, so need to stay awake tomorrow, can't be sleeping during the day if going to work next week. The fatigue has been part of my life for years, when I fell 3 1/2 yrs ago, I was soooo tired, I was off twice for 6 mo each time. But every blood test came back negative as to a reason why. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia about 10 years ago, so take medication to stop flare, which are very painful (uncontrollable muscle swelling, anywhere, at any time) and the fatigue that goes with it is debilitating but I try my best to stay healthy. So now I have to get outside and walk as much as I can, every day until I get back to work. I get lots of exercise back and forth to work, which helps. Can't wait until I get my last appt with the surgeon in Sept, so I can be released to get to the gym, finally, strengthen my left leg.
