Should i start a Dubia colony?(PICTURE UPDATE 4/12)

I'm not sure if they will eat the orange peels. I usually slice my oranges into wedges and the only thing I remove IS the peel. ;-)

I'll let the peels stay in there longer next time, maybe I am taking them out before they decide to eat on it.

I just bought a UTH mini. Going to see how warm it gets, but I'll probably attach it to a peice of aluminum scrap anyways, rather than the tote. I may need to put a rheostat on it. But they run low wattage and don't cost that much. The blue bulb is not doing the job.

Roaches are recycler insects, they will probably eat and food matter humans leave behind.

Congrats on your new "pets"! I'm also the "proud" owner of a brand new colony! I don't like the males for the some reason. The babies and larger nymphs are kind of cute and the females are kind of pretty, but the males.... eeewww I just don't like the wings or something. :lol: I WILL get used them though!

I'm actually shocked that i don't mind them! let me know how your colony is going since we're both starting this at the same time. How many adult pairs did you start out with?

I got 40 adults (30F/10M) and a mix of 60 nymphs. One of the males didn't make it. When I opened the box he was belly up. I put him in the bin and fixed it so he was upright, but he didn't make it. Everyone else seems to be doing ok so far. Do you know how long the babies stay that white/gray color? It seems to me that I have a lot more babies than I recall, but they're already the darker shade of gray so it could just be me.

I got 50 females and 20 males, when i opened the box i had 1 female belly up. i also had one male that didn't make it. i also ordered 120 mixed size nymphs. I really don't know how long they stay that color. maybe someone reading this will know! I do recall that saturday i had grey babies and today i didnt see any..

When they first hatch they are white.....

so if they are gray, they were already hardening their shells...

normally lasts a few hours at very most....

I just got 100 of mixed sized. I don't know how many mature males or females are in there but there is atleast several of each. I got them localy a few minutes drive from my town..the woman breeds for toamto frogs and had extras.

Congrats, also you can just cut the orange in half and the roaches will eat down to the peel. :wink: Also use apples they will eat the whole thing.

neighbor has an apple tree, so atleast in the summer I'll have free roach food.
