Resources for Aussie owners

Hi everyone. Figured I’d make this post to share some resources I’ve come across that are great sources of food, supplies and healthcare for us aussie owners.
I am based in the Hunter region of NSW so some of these will be more for people in this area.

Reptile Realm (reptilerealm.com.au) - great little online store that offers primarily live feeder insects but also sells home-grow seed packs for reptiles that are all dragon safe greens and they also sell some other items like food bowls.
They offer smaller sized insect packs but you can also buy bulk insect packs with is great if you have a LOT of reptiles to feed. One of the only places I’ve found that actually sells live BSFL.
I’ve bought both like BSLF, seed packs and food bowls from this place and can confirm that they package products well, are reasonably priced and the packages arrive in a timely manner.

Sugarloaf Animal Hospital (sugarloafanimalhospital.com.au) - located in West Wallsend. This is who I go to with my two rescue dragons and I’ve found they do a great thorough job with both general checkups as well as more specific issues, imaging and procedures. Their reptile specialists really seem to know their stuff and I can highly reccomend Dr Kathy, Dr Brett and Dr Daisy. As with all ‘exotics’ it can be a little pricey but their thoroughness and expertise are well worth it.

Jonaths Animal Kingdom (www.jonathsanimalkingdom.com.au) - Located in Beresfield this is a family owned and run pet supplies store. I find they have a much better range of reptile supplies (specifically lighting) than a lot of bigger pet stores like Petbarn. Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for a decent product range.

Kellyville Pets (www.kellyvillepets.com.au) - I buy from this place online on occassion and find the products are well packaged and ship pretty quick. Again they seem to have a larger range of reptile products than Petbarn does. I’ve specifically bought lighting and a water fountain from them before and haven’t had any issues with anything.

That’s all I have for now but I do plan to update this list whenever I come across any other places worth a mention.

There's also petwave.com.au based in Sydney. Their deliveries are fast and well packaged, and they have a wide variety of stuff. Same goes for Pet City - online orders also available there, with free delivery in QLD - based in Mt Gravatt, Brisbane. I got my Oswald from there.

Adding another specialist vet on here:
SASH in North Ryde NSW ( Vet Oncologist - Animal Cancer Treatment - SASH Vets )
My eldest rescue has just been diagnosed with Chromatophoroma and has been referred to here for treatment and in looking into SASH I’ve found that they’re considered to be THE best veterinary oncology clinic in the country.
Hoping nobody needs this service but in the unfortunate case they do it seems this is the best bet for treatment. As of august 2023 pricing wise they’ve estimated an initial consult fee of $169 and a estimate for a CT + surgical proceedure to excise the tumor at between $1600 - $3500 so yes pricey but not as bad as I was expecting.

are perfect for mealworms and BSFL and BlowFly maggots (provided the dish is clean and DRY and the worms are dry, even little hoodeenies like BSFL cant crawl out.

can also source silkworm eggs , and silkworms (sml to large) on GumTree
can also source fresh mulberry leaves in bulk on Ebay and GumTree ( they can be kept in the crisper in an open bag for several weeks before they spoil , never use mouldy leaves ---- the mould will murder your silkworms quickly.
Can often have the freshly picked mulberry leaves sent to your home by registered mail, will cost more then leaves even when buying 100 to 200 leaves in a batch (large silkworms will polish of leaves by the dozen per day) , the registered mail will be more costly than the leaves.
Mulberry leaves can be blanched, then snap chilled in icewater and frozen (once patted dry) to provide an offseason food source for you silkworms. A cheaper option than Silkworm Chow (sold in powder form).

I’m currently working on an informative guide to bearded dragons as pets that I intend as an introductory guide for those considering getting a dragon and have no prior experience or even those who have some experience but may need some more info.
I’m in contact with my reptile vet about this and they’re assisting with reviewing the content and giving pointers on things they’d reccomend adding or revising.
Once they’ve deemed it’s good to go I plan on looking into getting it published and distributed initially to vets but potentially also pet stores.
In my experience vets usually only have single sheets of information on individual topics if anything at all to give out when it comes to bearded dragons and I personally haven’t come across any guides for bearded dragons or even reptiles in general at pet stores in my area so I felt having a resource like what I’m working on would be beneficial for all involved.

Absolutely there are 1 or 2 guides out there but I think a lot of the info is out dated. I sincerely hope your successful with this

For sure. I’m currently making a few revisions and adding some sections in like the anatomy of a bearded dragon and a section on record keeping but I have made initial contact with a self publishing organisation so it would be great to get this guide out there particularly as they’re getting more popular as pets so there is going to be that need for a good information source especially considering there’s still some areas of care that have controversy regarding what is and isn’t ideal which I can see would be confusing to those with no prior experience which is also why I’m thankful to have actual reptile specialised vets reviewing the drafts to ensure the information contained is ideal from a medical standpoint

I second SASH North Ryde as great for emergencies and issues smaller vets aren’t equipped for.
They were willing to attempt a surgery they hadn’t performed before on a bearded dragon for my old man Spike which was successful. (Shout out to Dr Truong from the exotics department and their surgeon Dr Looi who did the proceedure)
They went above and beyond and Spike made a full recovery and it still doing well 8 months on.
