I'd suggest no smaller than 48x18x18, but ideally 48x24x24.
If you use a 36x18x18 it will be way too small for a beardie once they hit 12 months of age. Although a beardie can survive in a tank that is less than ideal your goal should be having the animal thrive, not just survive.
Even giving them time out of the tank, in my opinion, doesn't cut it, they should be able to get everything they need for the most part in their tank. And a 36x18x18 is just too small for that. Barely any room to run around or climb once they're adults.
