Nail maintenance

I've noticed my little girl's nails getting longer and sharper and it's starting to become a problem. What kinds of things can I put in her new, bigger tank that will help to keep her nails maintained naturally?

I've been noticing that on ours, too.
I read that rocks/stones help? Just placing something rough in the cage that they can climb around on.
We are planning to use tiles in their adult vivs partially for this reason. :wink:

Also, I read your can trim reptile claws in much the same way as cat/dog claws, but I don't know how they'd deal with that.
They can be huge wiggle worms so I can't imagine nail clippers being effective and safe for a young dragon! :?

So your using tiles instead of sand in your tank? What kind of tiles and where are you getting them from?

The boyfriend is the one who knows what we're getting and where we're getting it from, not me, haha.

From what I've read, a good number of people here use tile instead of sand- I like the idea.

We just trim Zeus's nails with reptile nail clippers we bought at the pet store. Just take off a small amount. We were scared at first to do this based on the nightmare we always had trimming our dog's nails (we eventually gave up on that and had the vet do it). But Zeus was fine. It's like she didn't even notice it.

Hehe, sounds like me when I'm knitting and/or watching the news!

We just picked up 4x4" tile for .32 cents each. We found a really great rusty-colored tile, too. My life has already improved by just pulling out one or two tiles to clean poo!

There was another thread here where someone ended up using an emory board. I may try this method later on...

Thanks! I'll have to check that out this week when I get the chance, after I clean out the snakeskins from whoever owned it before and do a thorough bleach-water treatment. Well, Bella is clamoring for crickets now, so I need to go feed her. Thanks again for the help, guys!

I use part sand part tiles. I have several differant types of rocks that are nice and rough, along with a slate tile that is smooth, a sand stone sorta tile that is very course. Ever since I put the rough rocks and such in there i havent had to clip them as much. The sand stone one works awesome for keeping his nales down.

But regular nail clipper work just fine you dont need to get anything fancy. Just make sure they are sharp so that they make a nice quick cut without shreading the nail. Judah would set pretty still on my lap for trimming his nails. Sometimes I would only have time to get the front or the back done in one sitting. Try it when it is just about bed time or when they just wake up, then they are kind groggy and will sit still better. Oh and watch out you dont cut to close the quick, they'll let ya know if you are too close. I clip very slow and softly and Judah will shake his paw if im too close.
