Door-to-door testing in Koonibba, the far west SA Aboriginal community at centre of COVID-19 outbreak
A COVID-19 outbreak at Koonibba in South Australia's far west is growing, as authorities go door to door testing for the disease.

SA Health data shows there are 76 active cases in the District Council of Ceduna, which includes the Aboriginal community of Koonibba where many residents have been forced into isolation.

Health authorities opened a drive-through testing site at the Ceduna Blues Sports Club on Monday to help get on top of the spread.

Ceduna Aboriginal Corporation chief executive Wayne Miller said health workers doorknocked in Koonibba to administer tests.

"We've done the whole of community testing twice out there which has been able to detect the cases very early on, but we still need to do a lot of work to prevent the spread."

He said local events like funerals and large gatherings had been curtailed.

"While we start to see outbreaks, I think we need to modify all of those things to best protect community.

"It's a really good and wise move that the Koonibba community have done to limit attendance numbers because … we don't want them to turn into superspreader events."

The lack of mobile coverage in Koonibba was proving a challenge, he said.

"We've got a community that doesn't have mobile phone coverage, so even getting important health messages to them is a concern.

"There are a number of strategies that have been put in place or are going to be put in place to try to improve that."

In a statement, SA Health said it had been working with Aboriginal community leaders and councils for 19 months to develop plans to deal with potential outbreaks.

"The community response plans for Koonibba have now been activated and SA Health and [SA Police] have responded," a spokesperson said.

SA Health said it was assisting local authorities with increased testing and other supports.

It said about 72 per cent of people in the Ceduna local government area aged 12 and above were fully vaccinated.

The agency has also opened a new drive-through testing clinic at the Ravendale Sporting Complex in Port Lincoln.

Premier Steven Marshall says South Australia's current COVID-19 outbreak is stabilising, with 3829 new infections and only a small increase in hospitalisations,
The number of people in hospital rose by seven to 227, with 26 in intensive care where five people are on ventilators.

There were no deaths in the past 24 hours with the current number of active infections falling by 3783 to 33,703.

Mr Marshall said the current situation in SA was nothing like what the state was experiencing a few weeks ago when new infections were doubling every couple of days.

"It is very stable at the moment. We can't be complacent, we're still dealing with a highly transmissible variant," he said.

"But we are starting to see some very, very hopeful signs.

"Over the last two days, we've had more people recovered than infected, another indication we are getting towards the peak of this infection."

SA last week released its latest modelling on the trajectory of the current outbreak which suggested the peak would be reached by January 25.Daily cases were forecast to go as high as 10,000 but that was well below the 40,000 predicted had the state not reintroduced some local restrictions on Boxing Day.

They included a 25 per cent density requirement for most venues, a 10-person cap on family gatherings and continued mask mandates.

The Public Health Association of Australia said if those measures had flattened the Omicron curve in SA they should be imposed in other states.

"If that assessment is true then all other states, and particularly those down the east coast, should as a matter of urgency adopt similar strategies," Chief Executive Terry Slevin said.

"Clearly the South Australian population is far lower than that of NSW, Victoria or Queensland, but on a per 100,000 persons basis, it is clear that virus spread is far lower in SA."

Despite the improving position, concerns remain over the number of cases across SA's aged care sector, which have prompted limits and restrictions on visits from family and friends.

SA currently has 102 outbreaks, defined as at least one COVID-positive resident or two positive staff, in aged care homes with 572 staff and 615 residents having the virus.

Mr Marshall said officials had identified 11 centres that required some significant support, which could include extra protective equipment or assistance with testing.

"We want to help in any way we can," the premier said.

"But we're very confident the aged care community is getting on top of this."

Mr Marshall said the major issue for the sector was the impact on staffing, prompting an upcoming revision of return to work rules to provide a "nuanced" approach to getting workers who may be close contacts back on the job.

"We need to do this in a careful and considered way," he said.

Tasmania's COVID-19 patients to have face-to-face appointments in City Hall. The Hobart City Hall is set to become an outpatient treatment facility for COVID-19 patients, as Tasmania grapples with an increase in case numbers.

The deal between the council and the Department of Health enables people who have tested positive for COVID-19 to have face-to-face appointments in the hall without having to go to the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Currently, COVID-19 outpatient appointments are conducted in a designated ward at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

"City Hall will be stood up if this COVID-19 ward space is needed for increased numbers of overnight COVID-19 admitted patients," Health Minister Jeremy Rockliff said in a statement.

"When needed, the City Hall clinic will be configured to allow for stringent protocols to be in place to ensure there is no risk of transmission while patients use the facility."

During the spread of swine flu in 2009, City Hall hosted respiratory outpatient clinics.

Mr Rockliff said the move had remained a contingency in pandemic planning for the Southern Region since that time.

Tasmania has recorded 1,037 new COVID-19 cases, up from 825 yesterday.

Twenty-one people are in hospital and one person remains in intensive care.

There are 6,365 actives cases in the state, down slightly from yesterday's figure of 6,485.
Out of the day's positive cases, 310 were PCR tests and 727 were rapid antigen tests.

Just over 5,800 rapid tests were distributed yesterday, under the new arrangement which requires people to request a test from the government using an online registry.

There are now 372 people receiving medical assistance in their homes through the COVID at home program.

In the state, 97.75 per cent of eligible people aged 12 and over have now had their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 94 per cent have had two doses.

Just over 26 per cent of those aged 18 and over have had a booster shot.

Galiwin’ku to enter lockdown for seven days
The Wessel Islands Archipelago, encompassing Elcho Island including Galiwin’ku and Wessel Island including Martjanba, will enter a lockdown at 2pm today for seven days to help control the spread of COVID-19. This will allow for cases to be managed locally where possible through COVID Care in the home or at alternative accommodation on the island.
Yirrkala to enter lockdown for 72 hours
Yirrkala will enter a lockdown at 2pm today for at least 72 hours to undertake a testing blitz and identify the spread of COVID-19 in the community.
Lockdown requirements

During a lockdown, residents must stay at home and are only permitted to leave for the following four reasons:
1. Medical treatment, including COVID testing and vaccination
2. For essential goods and services, like groceries, medications or power tokens. Only one household member should visit the store, once per day
3. For one hour of outdoor exercise a day within 5 km from your home with one other person or people from your house
4. To provide care and support to a family member or person who cannot support themselves, or in the case of an emergency.
Essential workers who are fully vaccinated can continue to go to work.
Public health measures
To slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community and reduce the rate of transmission the following public health measures are in place across the NT:

PCRs remain restricted in who can access them to test for covid.
RATs remain very hard to get hold of , further reducing the reliability of reported known VOC cases in all states with the exceptions of WA and NT where case loads are VOC case numbers remain low.

WA + 14 (local) ==> 137 , PCR ONLY RECORDED IN WA
SA + 3079 ==> 74099 cases * , 2 DEAD, PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN SA
ACT + 1860 ==> 23457 cases * .1 DEAD, . PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN ACT
TAS + 1310 ==> 20059 cases * , PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN TAS
NT + BIG SURGE IN REMOTE COMMUNITIES (local) ==> 6514 ! , PCR ONLY RECORDED IN NT

NZ + 13 (LOCAL) ==> 11396 !, PCR ONLY RECORDED IN NZ , NO RESTRICTIONS ON PCR TESTING NZ <== ACCURATE CASE NUMBERS.

* not considered reliable numbers because in NSW -ve RATs are not being mandated to be reported and access to PCR tests is restricted ONLY to those ordered to be PCR tested and those who are symptomatic.
The concensas is the case numbers in ! are under-reporting actual case numbers to a significant degree , perhaps low by 2x fold or more.

Health experts are calling for a mandate for all RAT test results ( negative or positive ) to be reported and for free access to RATs for ALL Australians ON DEMAND.

Confirmed cases remain high but it's likely there are more undiagnosed cases. Regardless of the confirmed number in your town, plan and practice your COVID-safety measures.
From 12 January, you can report your positive Rapid Antigen Test via the Service NSW app. If you don't have access to the app, you can report results on the Service NSW website or call Service NSW on 13 77 88. Do not attend a service centre.
Get your vaccinations. Wear a mask indoors. Wash and sanitise your hands frequently. Practice physical distancing and avoid crowds or gatherings where you are aren't able to. Use QR codes. Be particularly careful around older people, or people with health conditions.
Plan ahead - have a plan ready for if you, or someone in your household, needs to self-isolate with COVID-19, or while waiting for test results.
RAT results for each District is currently not available.

Victoria's peak business group claims Melbourne is experiencing an "unofficial lockdown" as cautious residents increasingly shun restaurants, cafes and retail outlets, while business owners struggle to juggle isolating staff.
The latest outbreak has seen visits drop by 25 percent - on average - across the city in the opening weeks of the year.

Melbourne CBD retail visits are down 61 percent, park visits down 51 percent and travel to workplaces also down 51 percent.

Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry says combined with positive case numbers and close contact isolation requirements have resulted in the forced closure of businesses or significant scaling back of operations.

Victorian health officials have declared a "Code Brown" for all metropolitan and 6 regional hospitals as the health system begins to buckle under the pressure of rising coronavirus cases and thousands of furloughed staff.
“Health workers are getting COVID themselves, we’ve got lots of people trying to take annual leave because it’s summer,” Ms Baxendale told Sky News Australia.
“Essentially, there just aren’t enough staff to go around.”

Queensland has recorded its deadliest day of the COVID-19 pandemic, plus 15,952 new infections overnight.

16 people have died after testing positive to the virus, including 9 people from residential aged care facilities.

New visitor restrictions for hospitals have also been introduced.Only 2 people will be allowed to visit patients in wards.

Only 1 person in addition to a patient can attend the emergency department.
"We have had some reports from hospitals and health services they are seeing large groups of family members coming into the emergency department together," Ms D'Ath said.
"We really need to reduce the number of people coming into our emergency departments and moving around our wards."

Chief Medical Officer Dr John Gerrard said out of the 45 COVID-19 related deaths in Queensland since December 13, only 1 person had received a booster shot.
"The virus does seem to be finding older people who have not received that third dose," he said.

Of today's cases, 5984 were reported by positive rapid antigen test results.

There are 819 people are in hospital including 50 people in ICU and 18 people on ventilators.
"That's a substantial increase from the previous 24 hours when it was 702," Dr Gerrard said.
"We often find numbers on a Monday are higher than other days, because of lags in discharges over the weekend, that is a common phenomenon in hospitals."
"Clearly the numbers are going up.".

WA
COVID-19 update 18 January 2022
Exposure sites continue to be updated on the HealthyWA website. People are urged to check this site regularly and follow the relevant health advice.

WA Health has reported two local COVID-19 cases and 12 travel-related cases to 8pm last night.

The two local cases are linked to the Cockburn cluster, with contact tracers now working with these cases to determine potential exposure sites.

Exposure sites

WA Health’s contact tracing team continues to identify a new range of exposure sites linked to new cases and it is likely exposure sites will be updated or added. Please continue to check exposure sites regularly, these are listed on the HealthyWA website.

WA Health has identified potential higher risk COVID-19 exposure in Osborne Park, Applecross and Mount Lawley, and urgently requires people who visited these sites at the times listed to get tested immediately and self-quarantine.

These higher risk COVID-19 exposure sites include Comfort Massage in Osborne Park, U Natural Spa Therapy in Applecross and New U Massage in Mount Lawley.

These locations have been visited by multiple COVID-19 cases and WA Health believes additional people have attended the businesses during this time, without registering their attendance or using the SafeWA app.

Testing advice
People are urged to continue to check the exposure sites page of the HealthyWA website for updates, and if they have been to an exposure site to follow the listed health advice.
Anyone in the Perth and Peel regions experiencing symptoms should get tested immediately and isolate until they receive a negative result.

Testing clinics
8,416 Western Australians were swabbed at clinics yesterday.
WA Health is expanding testing capacity, including operating hours of clinics. People are encouraged to check the HealthyWA website to find clinic locations and opening hours.
Private clinics are also available. Testing is available free of charge at private testing clinics for people who have been advised by WA Health to get tested, or who have been present at exposure sites at the times listed on the HealthyWA website.

Vessels
WA Health is closely monitoring two vessels off the WA coast, both reporting probable COVID cases on board through returned positive Rapid Antigen Tests.
All positive crew members on board these vessels are isolating in their cabins and being monitored safely.

SafeWA
Yesterday, 1,915,363 scans were recorded on the SafeWA app. This represents a 28.8 per cent increase in usage from the previous day.

It is increasingly important for everyone to check in when they visit businesses in WA. Using SafeWA or the ServiceWA app will help authorities contact those who may be at risk quickly and effectively.

Other information
There are currently 109 confirmed active cases in WA. Of these, 32 are in hotel quarantine, 77 are in self-quarantine and one is in hospital but not in ICU.
Today’s 14 new cases bring the State’s total number of COVID-19 cases to 1323.
1205 people have recovered from the virus.

Demand for vaccinations and BOOSTER doses and KIDDIE vaccinations is increasing. To spread the demand across clinic operating hours and to avoid excessive wait times, people are encouraged to make a booking via Vaccinate WA.
Vaccinations are also available at GPs and pharmacies.
Anyone who received their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine four or more months ago can now book their booster dose and ensure they have maximum protection against the disease.

Mandatory vaccination information
A mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for most occupations and workforces in WA is being introduced in a phased approach. For more information on getting your COVID-19 vaccine, visit: Roll Up For WA

Variants
To date, 326 cases of variant strains have been detected in Western Australia – including 120 Omicron strain, 53 Alpha strain, 15 Beta strain, one Gamma strain and 137 Delta strain.

SA health system crushed by COVID-19: AMA . The coronavirus pandemic has "steamrolled and crushed" South Australia's health system, a state parliamentary committee has been told.
Australian Medical Association state President Michelle Atchison said SA did not have enough ambulances, mental health patients were going without support and health workers were overworked and exhausted.

She told the COVID-19 Response Committee on Tuesday the AMA had not expected the state's borders to reopen in late November.

It believed more work could have been done to prepare health practitioners, and more time allowed for SA to reach a higher vaccination rate.
"Our view is one that's shared by many health professionals at the moment," Dr Atchison said.
"That is that we had a health system that everyone knew had significant cracks in it and COVID has steamrolled and crushed that system," she said.

Dr Atchison said while the latest modelling forecast a peak in Omicron cases in the next two weeks, questions remained about what would happen after that time."What will the health system look like then? How will it manage in the weeks and months beyond?" she said.
"How will the health system manage the backlog of cases of non-essential surgeries and other treatments that have been put on hold while this Omicron wave swamps us?
"What is being done to prepare for the impact of long COVID? Are there projections for case numbers and the staff to care for these patients?
"What's the long-term impact on the health and wellbeing of older Australians, many of whom have become virtual prisoners in aged care facilities?"

Dr Atchison said while South Australia had handled the Omicron outbreak better than the eastern states, the AMA still had concerns for how the health system was going to manage come March

In figures released on Monday, the state government said 567 SA Health workers were currently infected with COVID-19 while another 259 were away from their worksites while isolating as close contacts.

NT COVID-19 update
18 January 2022
There were 625 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the Northern Territory in the 24 hours to 8pm on 17 January 2022. Of these,
534 were positive cases from a Rapid Antigen Test.
This takes the number of active cases in the NT to about 4,140.

New cases recorded include:
• 8 cases in Galiwinku, bringing the total number to 27
• 9 cases in Yuendumu
• 7 cases in Amoonguna
• 7 cases in Areyonga
• 4 inmates at the Darwin Correctional Centre
• 6 inmates and two staff at the Alice Springs Correctional Centre
• 1 patient the Alyerre Renal Hostel in Alice Springs
• 1 case at Old Timers Town Camp in Alice Springs
• 1 case at Abbott’s Camp in Alice Springs
• 8 cases in Utopia
• 3 cases in Papunya
• 1 case in Alyangula

There are currently 43 patients in hospital, with 27 classified as acute hospital admissions including one patient in ICU.
1,474 COVID-19 PCR tests were processed across the NT yesterday.

Public health measures
To slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community and reduce the rate of transmission the following public health measures are in place across the NT:
• The Territory Vaccine Pass requires all people in the Northern Territory to show proof of their vaccination status to attend a range of businesses, venues, places and events
• A Territory-wide indoor mask mandate
• A lockout in Alice Springs, Yuendumu, Yuelamu and Amoonguna until 23 January
• A lockdown in Yirrkala until 20 January and in Galiwin’ku until 24 January.

New COVID-19 cases in the Northern Territory jump to 625, hospital admissions rise to 43.COVID-related admissions to hospital in the Northern Territory have risen to 43, with 625 new cases of the virus recorded in the latest reporting period.

NT Health Minister Natasha Fyles said 27 of the COVID-19 patients were considered acute admissions and one patient in Alice Springs was in intensive care.

The 625 new cases are a spike on figures seen on Monday, when the Territory recorded 284 cases.
"This is a large jump on the figures provided yesterday," she said.

Ms Fyles said the jump was expected, with less testing done on weekends, producing fewer reports into Mondays.

The Northern Territory has reported 625 new COVID-19 cases with concerning outbreaks in remote Indigenous communities from Arnhem Land to central Australia.
Among the newly infected are 8 people in Utopia, 240km north of Alice Springs, where the vaccination rate was about 40 %.
en have also tested positive in the nearby communities of Areyonga and Papunya, and one case was detected in Bulla, about 370km south of Darwin.
8 more cases were also detected in Galiwin'ku, 515km east of Darwin in East Arnhem, bringing the cluster on Elcho Island to 27.
"In the last few days we have seen the number of cases presenting in more and more communities (increasing), particularly in central Australia and now in East Arnhem, that is of concern," Acting Chief Health Officer Marco Briceno said on Tuesday.
"We are working very closely with the local Aboriginal medical services, with the other government agencies and communities to ensure we are responding to those outbreaks appropriately."

Meanwhile, health workers were stumped by a case in Alyangula, on Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria, after it was revealed the patient does not have a "known travel history".

13 new infections were also detected in an Alice Springs Renal MediHostel and 13 at the local prison, bringing an outbreak at the correctional facility to 35.

2 new cases were found in town camps ( homeless camps ) and 7 at Amoonguna just outside the city, bringing the community's cluster to 28 cases.

North of Alice Springs, an outbreak grew by 9 cases in Yuendumu, 295km northwest of Alice Springs, bringing the total number of infections in the cluster to 66.

No new infections were detected in nearby Yuelamu after wet season rains blocked roads and closed the airstrip.

Across the remote communities serviced by NT Health, 77 % of residents aged >5yo have had one vaccination dose, and 69 % are double dosed.

But the figures do not include the 29 communities with Aboriginal-controlled health organisations where vaccination rates are much lower.
"This is a large jump on the figures we provided yesterday," Health Minister Natasha Fyles said of the 625 new cases.
"But we did in a way expect this. It's not greatly concerning to us."

Ms Fyles said the 14-day average was 400 new infections per day and Tuesday's high case tally reflected a previous lull in testing.

There are 4132 active cases in the territory with the majority in and around the two largest population centres of Darwin and Alice Springs.

Forty-three infected people are in territory hospitals - less than one per cent of the current caseload - with 27 experiencing severe symptoms and one in intensive care.

About 30 % of the territory's 246,500-strong population are Indigenous ( all considered extremely vulnerable to covid )..

The NT detected 284 new cases on Monday, 327 on Sunday, 412 on Saturday, 546 on Friday, 550 on Thursday, 352 on Wednesday and 594 on Tuesday.

NT + 418 ! ==> 6957 cases, PCR ONLY RECORDED IN NT

NZ + 23 (LOCAL) ==> 11419 !, PCR ONLY RECORDED IN NZ , NO RESTRICTIONS ON PCR TESTING NZ <== ACCURATE CASE NUMBERS.

Up to 8pm last night there were 451 new cases identified by PCR testing in the Western NSW Local Health District, in the following local government areas (LGA):

Hundreds of VIC police are forced to isolate in Australia due to Covid. Victoria Police has confirmed many officers are isolating as close contacts and are unable to work because it hasn't been able to 'source a consistent and reliable supply' of Rapid Antigen Tests. 'While Victoria Police has received an initial supply of rapid antigen tests (RATs) and more are expected shortly, we have not yet been able to source a consistent and reliable supply to cover the number that would be required to test all employees currently isolating,' a spokesperson for Victoria Police said in a statement.

'It is hoped these supply chain issues will be resolved in the next few weeks. As a result, Victoria Police employees who are close family contacts will need to continue to isolate.'

'For operational reasons we will not be providing numbers on how many employees are on unplanned leave, including those isolating. The community can be assured that service delivery to the public will remain unaffected during this time.'

CODE BROWN ALERT issued for every major hospital in Victoria = all leave cancelled , no visitors , unlimited call ins and overtime for all nurses , doctors , paramedics and ambulance crews , and clinicians due to severe staff shortages due to staff being taken out of commission by contracting Delta or Omicron at work or when off duty , and more being deemed close contacts and forced into 14 day ISO or until they produce a negative RAT or PCR.
All elective procedures cancelled including IVF. Private Hospitals and their staff are conscripted to the covid health battle.

ADF personnel will be deployed to Victoria to help the struggling healthcare system.Hospitals have been overwhelmed by rising COVID cases, prompting a 'code brown' emergency declaration.
The declaration means health care staff and resources can be redeployed to different sites and non-essential services will be postponed. The military assistance includes 20 drivers who will support paramedics.

Residential aged care in Victoria ( actually all over NSW, QLD, SA, ACT, NT, Tas, and Vic ) are in crisis AGAIN with over 1/3 of all residential aged ( and Disabled NDIS funded ) care facilities reporting staff shortages due to staff being infected by Delta or Omicron , being deemed close contacts and forced in ISO til they produce a negative PCR or RAT ( minimum 14 days) , and many residents infected with Delta or Omicron . Nothing has been learnt from the Aged Care RC and no action taken to rectify the issues identified by the RC , again the Federal Govt Minister for Aging & Disability has sat on his hands and done nothing.

Victoria announces four day 'booster blitz'. Victorian COVID Response Deputy Secretary Naomi Bromley says reducing the interval between a second vaccine and a booster to three months is a “huge milestone”.“It’s vital that we made this change in our state run system ahead of school and work picking up again in February,” she said. “It means someone getting vaccinated this weekend will have their full protection within the first weeks of February.”
Ms Bromley said there would be a four day booster blitz at major vaccination centres and there would be extra bookings and space for walk-ins.
NSW, QLD, SA, ACT and TAS all have followed Vic Health in bringing forward booster shots ( here the choices are Pfizer or Moderna irrespective of the primary vaxx you had , and yes , some will choose AZ as their booster despite it's poor Omicron neutralization ).

19 JANUARY = DELTA WAVE Day 217 & OMICRON TSUSAMI Day 42 < Pt4 VIC HUMAN BEHAVIOUR IN VICTORIA >

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

19/1/2022 VIC

There's no Victorian COVID-19 lockdown, but Melburnians are choosing to stay home anyway. Two months ago, Premier Daniel Andrews said Victorians could expect a summer filled with the "normality we've all craved" due to the state's strong vaccination coverage.
"If you're fully vaccinated … then your life will be back to normal, you'll be able to enjoy all of the things that you have yearned for and miss and desperately worked so hard for," Mr Andrews said as the state arrived at its 90 per cent vaccination target.

In a way, the statement still holds. The government has barely introduced major restrictions since then, apart from the closure of dancefloors and light indoor density limits.

But as a wave of Omicron infections wreaks havoc across workplaces and the healthcare system, data suggests Victorians are voting with their feet and staying close to home.

University of Melbourne mobility analyst Rohan Byrne said mobility in Melbourne had "plummeted" to its lowest point since the last lockdown, even compared to previous holiday seasons.

He said the size of the fall could not be fully accounted for by the hundreds of thousands of Victorians isolating as cases or close contacts."This is systematic, mass, stay-at-home behaviour, the likes of which we usually see during deep, organised stage four-style lockdowns," he said.

Mr Byrne said mobility at the moment was roughly equivalent to the 2020 period before Melbourne moved from stage three to stage four lockdown. "We're still doing things like we're going to the park, we're going to the beach on hot days, you can see that very clearly," he said. "But generally, for that ordinary day-to-day travel, be that to a workplace or to a friend's house or family, that travel is no longer happening. "And that trend is something that we're seeing all across the city."

Mr Byrne said that trend extended to Melbourne's outer suburbs, where lower socio-economic communities had been among the first to go into lockdown this time around.

While he said part of it would be due to Omicron hitting essential workers and those on lower incomes harder, it also spoke to that community's hard-learnt appreciation of the "perils of this virus". "And that really untangles that narrative that we had, you know, all the way through 2020 and 2021, where there was this fear, there was the suspicion, that there were other people somewhere else that weren't doing the right thing," he said. "We really are all in this together and the data proves it."

There are fewer CBD trips for shopping and dining
There are other signs, too, that highlight a shift in focus from enjoying the freedoms of a reopened economy to navigating the pressure caused by the rapid rise in Omicron cases.

Victorians are less interested in finding restaurants or cafes to enjoy than they are in finding a rapid antigen test (RAT), for example.

It's quieter on our roads, but the timing of an Omicron wave during the state's summer holidays can make the picture complicated.

It's usual to see a lull in public transport use over the summer holidays, and network and road upgrades have caused disruption to some services.

Nonetheless, Friday's Google mobility data, which compares activity to a pre-pandemic baseline of several weeks over January and February in 2020, showed retail and recreation activity in the City of Melbourne falling 62 per cent below the baseline.

Public transport usage in the city centre has fallen to 73 per cent below the baseline.

The Department of Transport's figures show public transport usage steadily rose through December to hit 83 per cent of February 2020 levels — before crashing to 32 per cent.

It's a similar story on the roads.

Business groups have been sounding growing alarm about the trend for weeks, warning the unofficial "shadow lockdown" is dealing significant damage to the bottom line, but this time without significant government support.

The Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry's acting chief executive Scott Veenker said customer numbers were dwindling across hospitality and events sectors, and the surge in infections was also putting pressure on staffing.

The chamber is calling on federal and state governments to offer free RATs to small and medium-sized businesses, and suggesting a one-off payment equivalent to three weeks of support under the joint business packages released during previous lockdowns.

It remains to be seen how this unofficial lockdown will affect the Australian Open, which has only just begun in Melbourne.

While session tickets were capped at 50 per cent last week, the opening day saw 25,206 attendees on Monday.

That's a higher turnout than the first day last year, when 17,922 attendees were recorded.

This time, the end of lockdown is up to Victorians
Mr Byrne said a "shadow lockdown" was a fair description for the situation. "It is a true lockdown, but of course it wasn't announced and therefore we haven't entered it all at once, and because it wasn't announced or planned, we're not going to be able to exit it all at once either," he said.

In that way, he predicted it would differ to the "U shape" of mandated lockdowns, with a longer tail in and out.

He said the lockdown, which had "sort of emerged organically", would also bring with it different levels of anxiety, uncertainty and confusion for some people. "There's going to be friction between people, because different people are going be to making a decision on the basis of their own risk profiles," he said. "And they're going to disagree — whether that's employers or family members or friends — when you go to cancel a social engagement because you don't want to go out and catch Omicron. "In the past, you could say it's OK, it's the government, it's the policy, but that's not what we have right now. So it's going to be in some ways [it will be] more stressful for a lot of people."

A very similar avoidance behavior is being observed in NSW ( in Greater Sydney , Gosford , Newcastle , Lake Macquarie , Forster Tuncurry , Port Stephens ( Nelsons Bay ) ) , and in QLD ( on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane , and on the Sunshine Coast ) , and in SA ( Adelaide ), as indicated by studies of movements of cars , number people using public transport , and number walk ins in shops and at shopping malls.
The majority of people in NSW, Vic , SA, ACT, Tas, NT and QLD are highly critical of the Let It Rip ( do nothing ) strategy forced onto the states by ScoMo and NSW Premier Perrettot , it's been a very costly policy in lives and has caused more damage than a Stage 4 HARD LK DWN would have caused.
AMA and Health experts are all calling for Stage 4 lockdowns in all eastern states with immediate effect.

Uber buys out Aussie car share company

Queensland has recorded 19,932 new cases and 11 deaths, down from a record 16 people who died on Tuesday.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the new cases on Wednesday during a media conference with chief health officer Dr John Gerrard.

It comes after Queensland recorded 15,962 new cases on Tuesday.

Ms Palaszczuk announced that from 1am this Saturday, international travellers can return and no longer have to do quarantine, if they are vaccinated.

The premier said the decision was made possible by the state's current vaccination rate of 91. 5 per cent of the population with one dose of a vaccine and 88.82 per cent who are double dosed.

Travellers will need to do a RAT test within 24 hours of arrival. Unvaccinated travellers will still need to do two weeks of quarantine. She admitted the intl arrivals are now more likely to contract Delta or Omicron here than to bring it in.

COVID-19 update 19 January 2022

WA Health has reported 2 local COVID-19 cases and 3 travel-related cases to 8pm last night.

One case is a close contact of a previously reported case and has been in quarantine.
The second case is being investigated.
Currently there are no known links between this case and other known cases. This person has been infectious in the community but is now in quarantine. Contact tracers are now working with this case to determine potential exposure sites.
Hit Studio Karaoke Box has been upgraded to a close contact exposure site. This means anyone who visited this location between 10pm on January 14 and 2am on January 15 must get tested immediately and isolate for 14 days from the date of last exposure, unless directly advised otherwise by the Department of Health.

Testing clinics
5,980 Western Australians were swabbed at clinics yesterday.

SafeWA
Yesterday, 1,903,3023 scans were recorded on the SafeWA app.
It is increasingly important for everyone to check in when they visit businesses in WA. Using SafeWA or the ServiceWA app will help authorities contact those who may be at risk quickly and effectively.

Other information
There are currently 82 confirmed active cases in WA. Of these, 25 are in hotel quarantine, 57 are in self-quarantine. No cases are currently in hospital.
Today’s five new cases bring the State’s total number of COVID-19 cases to 1328.
1236 people have recovered from the virus.

Border controls
Information about Western Australia’s controlled border arrangements, conditions of entry and quarantine is available online.

COVID-19 vaccinations
COVID-19 vaccination clinics administered 31,614 yesterday.
Demand for vaccinations and third doses is increasing.
An additional 4,700 vaccination appointments for 5 to 11s have been added at State-run clinics between January 22 and January 30, these can be booked online at VaccinateWA.
A dedicated paediatric vaccination clinic will also open at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre (PCEC) and increased children's vaccinations will be available at Kwinana and Ellenbrook vaccination clinics. All other appointments booked at the PCEC clinic will continue as scheduled.

Mandatory vaccination information
A mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for most occupations and workforces in WA is being introduced in a phased approach. For more information on getting your COVID-19 vaccine, visit: Roll Up For WA

Variants
To date, 326 cases of variant strains have been detected in Western Australia – including 119 Omicron strain, 53 Alpha strain, 15 Beta strain, one Gamma strain and 138 Delta strain.

Remote WA community of Kupungarri living in fear as COVID-19 reinforces need for mobile service. Most Australians are able to call for help when they're in trouble, but Deb Donation lives in constant fear for the safety of her community in remote Western Australia, where mobile phone reception is non-existent.

Ms Donation is a Ngarinyin woman and the chair of Kupungarri community, one of the most remote Aboriginal communities in the state.
"It's challenging and also scary because it's always on the back of our minds," she said.
"Everyday we tell our kids, 'Don't you break your arms', or, 'Don't you play rough because we don't want you guys to end up injured and we haven't got a nurse here'."

Located in the Kimberley region 2,500 kilometres north-east of Perth and about 450km from the Northern Territory border, the town's residents have been waiting two years for a tower to be installed after receiving funding through the federal Mobile Black Spot Program (MBSP).

The closest hospital by road is a four-hour drive to Derby and in an emergency the only way to reach the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is by using the landline at the roadhouse.

Triple-0 not an option
Ms Donation has faced the terrifying reality of being unable to call emergency services when her son and his partner were involved in a car rollover just outside the community.
"His partner needed medical attention, so he just had to run with her back into community," she said.
"She was unconscious, drifting in and out.
"He carried her from the rollover site to the station creek, about four kilometres."

The pair were found at the creek and the injured woman was flown to Halls Creek Hospital where she recovered.

Ms Donation said residents were forced to drive between four and six hours to the closest towns to get reception, but as most families don't own a car, many have to wait for a lift into Broome or Derby.

Access to essential services
"Some people go without payments or can't get access to their documents or MyGov due to not being able to get access to their SMS," Ms Donation said.

Almost all 200 remote Aboriginal communities have been closed to visitors since the start of the pandemic, but even with the closures, communities with publicly accessible roadhouses and shops face exposure to COVID-19. And without mobile reception the risks are even greater.

WA border fears
Jodie Newman manages the Mt Barnett roadhouse at Kupungarri on the Gibb River Road, a popular travel route for tourists seeking a rugged outback adventure and an essential stop for fuel and supplies.

She said mobile reception was vital for protecting the community as national and international tourists were set to flood back in.
"You need to link your Medicare to MyGov to obtain your vaccination status certificate and to do that you must receive an SMS verification code which you cannot do unless you have mobile service," she said.
"We cannot do our QR check-ins when the tourists start to arrive here because we have no mobile service, so how are we meant to keep our mob safe?"

SA LOCAL DAILY CASES
19jan2022-DAILY-LOCAL-CASES-SA.png

The South Australian government has announced an immediate reduction in the interval between the second COVID-19 vaccination dose and the booster.

From today, that interval will be three months — down from four.

SA Premier Steven Marshall today confirmed a further 6 people had died with COVID-19 in South Australia, taking the total number of fatal cases since the start of the pandemic to 50.

The state has also recorded 3,482 new cases, and there are more than 30,000 active cases, Mr Marshall said.

He said today's daily case numbers were again below the seven-day average and "another clear indication we are at or around that peak".

South Australia has 294 people in hospital and 23 people in intensive care, including four on ventilators.
South Australia's total COVID death toll hits 50 as boosters made available after three months.

South Australia has asked regulators to investigate reports some rapid antigen tests bound for SA have been improperly diverted to other states.
Premier Steven Marshall says both the NSW and Victorian governments have denied requisitioning tests at Sydney and Melbourne airports.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has also ruled out the federal government being involved in any way, describing the allegations as "absurd".

But Mr Marshall says reports that tests have gone missing are serious and he has written to Australian Competition and Consumer Commission boss Rod Sims asking him to investigate.
"If these allegations prove correct, it's quite possible that they are illegal, anti-competitive and, of course, they're a massive kick in the guts for South Australia," the premier said.
"If they (the tests) have been taken by another state, that's outrageous."

Asked about the issue earlier, Mr Morrison said suggestions the Commonwealth had redirected supplies of rapid antigen tests, or impounded private supplies were not true.
"I have no idea where that's coming from and you know, it just floats around on social media and then it gets reported," he said.
"I mean, something happening on social media isn't a story. It's usually just rubbish."

Also on Wednesday, Mr Marshall said the state government had ordered an additional five million test kits to cater for growing demand.

He said that was on top of the 1.4 million kits SA Health already had in stock and the 200,000 currently arriving on a daily basis.

ACT residents aged 5-11 who have received one dose: 34.2%

New cases of COVID-19 recorded in the ACT in the 24 hours to 8pm yesterday: 1,467 (654 PCR and 813 RAT)

Active cases: 6,655* (2,916 PCR and 3,739 RAT)

Total number of cases: 27,618 (22,852 PCR and 4,766 RAT)

Patients in ACT hospitals as at 8pm yesterday: 60 (including 5in intensive care and 2ventilated)
Notes:
Detailed epidemiological updates on the COVID-19 situation in the ACT are currently provided weekly on Wednesdays.
Total cases includes all cases since 12 March 2020.
*From today, the active cases total also includes people who tested positive via Rapid Antigen Test.

19 January 2022 ACT BOOSTERS
People aged 18 and over will now be able to receive a booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine 3 months after receiving their second dose in the ACT.
This change had initially been slated to come into effect from 31 January 2022, but has been brought forward as vaccine supply in the ACT is plentiful and capacity is available at the ACT Government’s vaccination clinics.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr said booster uptake in the ACT had so far been strong and this change would help increase coverage rates among the Territory’s adult population.
“Just like the initial vaccine rollout, the ACT is leading the way with booster doses with one in three Canberrans aged 18 and over now having received a third vaccination,” Chief Minister Barr said.
“Receiving your booster is the best defence against COVID-19 infection and serious illness.”

Acting Minister for Health Chris Steel said there was ample capacity available within the ACT Government’s vaccination program to ensure everyone had timely access to a booster, once becoming eligible.
“Through our two ACT Government vaccination clinics, we have capacity to up to 32,500 vaccinations a week so there is plenty of opportunity for everyone eligible to come and receive their booster,” Minister Steel said.
“Reducing the interval to three months will mean an extra 183,000 Canberrans are now eligible to receive their booster.”

Bookings at the AIS Arena clinic can be made by calling the vaccination booking line on 02 5124 7700 between 7am and 7pm daily or online using MyDHR for those aged 16 and over. If you have an existing MyDHR account, you will be able to book your booster appointment from this afternoon.
The Canberra Airport vaccination clinic will be reopened from next week, but will initially be focused on priority vaccinations for school and early childhood staff.
As of this morning, the next available appointment for the AIS Arena clinic was on 26 January.
Vaccination bookings can also be made at participating GPs and pharmacies. However, many GPs and pharmacies are currently at capacity for administering vaccinations and may not be in a position to bring forward the booster interval.

The COVID outbreak detected in a ward in northern Tasmania's Mersey Community Hospital has grown from two cases to nine, as the state records another 1,185 infections.
Across the state there are 2 COVID patients in ICU — the same as yesterday — and 12 people are receiving treatment specifically for COVID complications.
The state's total active cases has dipped slightly to 6,323, with 1,279 people leaving quarantine in the past 24 hours.

Yesterday health authorities announced that two COVID cases had been detected in a medical ward at the Mersey in Latrobe.
Initially, one of four patients in the ward became symptomatic and returned a positive test, before a second patient came back positive.

Premier Peter Gutwein said the positive cases in the hospital had grown to 9 today — 8 patients and 1 staff member.
"It is an outbreak. It's a managed outbreak," he said.
"Public Health officials are currently working through the testing, tracing, isolation and quarantine process in terms of this outbreak, and are managing it."

Health Minister Jeremy Rockliff is set to provide an update on the situation at the hospital at 2:30pm.
Although the daily cases across Tasmania have been stable, experts say it is unlikely the state's COVID outbreak has peaked yet.
Public Health director Mark Veitch yesterday said more than half the total number of people being treated in hospital for COVID were aged in their 70s or 80s.

NT COVID-19 update
19 January 2022
There were 418 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the Northern Territory in the 24 hours to 8pm on 18 January 2022.
Of these, 355 were positive cases from a Rapid Antigen Test.

This takes the number of active cases in the NT to about 4,060.
New cases recorded include:
• 7 cases in Galiwinku
• 3 cases from Yirrkala, of which 2 people were in Nhulunbuy
• 3 cases in Umbakumba, of which the source of infection is unknown
• 4 cases in Bulla
• 2 cases in Lajamanu
• 14 cases in Yuendumu
• 7 cases in Yuelamu
• 15 cases in town camps surrounding Alice Springs
• 3 cases from the Old Timers Aged Care Service in Alice Springs
• 5 cases in Utopia
• 10 cases at the outstations surrounding Ntaria
• 2 cases in Santa Teresa

There are currently 48 patients in hospital, with seven patients requiring oxygen. There are no patients in ICU.
1,647 COVID-19 PCR tests were processed across the NT yesterday.

• A lockdown in Yirrkala until 20 January and in Galiwin’ku until 24 January
Residents of Umbakumba are asked to remain COVID-safe after three cases of COVID-19 were recorded where the source of infection is unknown. All people in Umbakumba should get tested for COVID-19 if they have any symptoms, and practice COVID-19 safe behaviours including hand washing, wearing a mask and maintaining a physical distance of 1.5 metres.

COVID-19 testing
Everyone should get tested for COVID-19 if showing symptoms. A number of NT Rapid Antigen Testing and Distribution Points have been established. Individuals can collect RATs for free from NT distribution centres located in Darwin, Katherine, Nhulunbuy, Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.

Indigenous groups are calling for urgent support from the military and federal government, saying the Northern Territory's COVID-19 pandemic response has failed.
NT Health Minister Natasha Fyles backed the request for more commonwealth resources to battle the virus in federally supported remote and vulnerable communities.
Aboriginal Peak Organisations NT warned of a growing emergency in the territory as the virus spreads to dozens of communities from Arnhem Land to central Australia.

Spokesman John Paterson said there are not enough health workers on the ground, and local health centre staff are exhausted and at breaking point.

Rapid antigen tests are also in short supply, with staff and community members not being tested.
"The result is that infected individuals are not being identified and are spreading the virus undetected," Mr Paterson said on Wednesday.

NT virus response teams are also struggling to transport and isolate infected people, who are "being left to isolate in overcrowded and inadequate accommodation".

Mr Paterson said the labour shortage had slowed the remote vaccination rollout in communities with Aboriginal-controlled health organisations.
"A surge workforce is urgently needed to deal with the current crisis," he said while raising concern over "a looming food security crisis" due to supply chain issues.
"This is the time, when the essential elements of the COVID response are faltering, to enlist the direct support of the Commonwealth and defence force," he said.

Ms Fyles agreed more commonwealth support was needed for federally supported communities and health organisations but said the NT had "plenty of resources" for its broader community.

20 JANUARY = DELTA WAVE Day 218 & OMICRON TSUSAMI Day 43

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
PCRs remain restricted in who can access them to test for covid.
RATs remain very hard to get hold of , further reducing the reliability of reported known VOC cases in all states with the exceptions of WA and NT where case loads are VOC case numbers remain low.

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY NEW CASES & DEATHS OVERNIGHT

AUS + 75668 new cases ==> 1900683 * and today's COVID DEATHS = 60.

NSW + 30825 new cases ==> 807988 cases ,25 DEAD , ,+ve RATs are RECORDED IN NSW
VIC +21966 ==> 6758253 cases , 15 DEAD , PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN VIC *
QLD + 16812 ==> 280103 , 9 DEAD , PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN QLD *
WA + 10 (local) ==> 152 , PCR ONLY RECORDED IN WA
SA + 3777 ==> 81308 cases * , SA's deadliest day of pandemic = 11 DEAD, PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN SA
ACT + 892 ==> 25816 cases * . PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN ACT
TAS + 927 ==> 22171 cases * , PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN TAS
NT + 459 ! ==> 7416 cases, PCR ONLY RECORDED IN NT

NZ + 38 (LOCAL) ==> 11457 !, PCR ONLY RECORDED IN NZ , NO RESTRICTIONS ON PCR TESTING NZ <== ACCURATE CASE NUMBERS.

Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
