WA COVID-19 update 14 January 2022
Exposure sites will continue to be updated on the HealthyWA website. People are encouraged to check this site regularly.

WA Health has reported 1 new local COVID-19 case and 8 travel-related cases since 8pm last night.

The new local case is a child, who is a household contact of a previously announced positive case. There is no community concern as the child has been in quarantine throughout their infectious period. WA Health encourages parents of children under 12 to get them vaccinated as soon as possible.

The Chief Health Officer has advised that case 1260, the woman announced on Wednesday as acquiring the virus from an unknown source, has now been linked to another case. Genome sequencing has connected the previously announced case of the Tasmania returned traveller with case 1260.

This was a result of comprehensive tracing by WA Health officials and is the reason WA Health is issuing new public health advice for exposure sites in Perth’s south.

New testing advice
Anyone who has visited any of the exposure sites in Atwell, Bentley, Bull Creek, Cannington, Jandakot, and Success should recheck the HealthyWA website for updated advice. For many of the sites in this area WA Health are now asking people to get tested immediately.

The public health advice also extends to anyone in the City of Cockburn or broader Perth metropolitan area experiencing symptoms to get tested and isolate until they receive a negative result.

A full list of testing clinics is available on Healthy WA website. Metropolitan public testing clinics are open until 10.00pm tonight.

Interstate and overseas travellers
7 of the new reported cases acquired the virus interstate
and 1 case is related to an overseas traveller. All are in quarantine.

SA LOCAL DAILY CASES

14 January 2022 SA

There have been 5,679 new cases of COVID-19 reported in South Australia today. There are currently 34,428 active cases in South Australia.

SA Health can confirm 2 women in their 90s, 1 man in his 60s, 1 man in his 70s and 2 men in their 80s, who tested positive for COVID-19 passed away in metropolitan Adelaide.

There are 246 people with COVID-19 in hospital, including 20 people in ICU and eight requiring a ventilator.

Of those hospitalised, 138 people are fully vaccinated, 23 are either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, and 85 have an unknown vaccination status.

Due to a reconfiguration of the data, 60 cases from yesterday have been removed from the total number of cases.
Regular genome sampling is taken to monitor the levels of Omicron within South Australia. 81% of samples taken returned an Omicron result.
Yesterday, 24,796 people received a PCR test in South Australia, a 23.6% increase on the previous 24 hours.

Ambulance crews 'overwhelmed' as emergency patients left waiting for hours.Emergency patients across Adelaide were left waiting up to seven hours for an ambulance to arrive last night amid "overwhelming" strain on South Australia's health system, the union says.

At one point, there was a backlog of 42 life-threatening cases with no spare crews to attend them, with the SA Opposition saying it was the "worst ever night" in terms of pressure on the state's paramedics.

Ambulance Employees Association (AEA) secretary Leah Watkins said in one case a paramedic was forced to drive a family member to hospital because an ambulance never arrived.

"A paramedic last night had a call from their dad saying that their mum had collapsed at home, and that they called an ambulance, but it had been half an hour and no-one was there still," she said.

"They rushed around and the paramedic drove their mum to hospital themselves, because an ambulance still wasn't there after an hour.

"They were so frustrated saying, 'Thank God my parents have me as a resource to be able to call on to come round and help out, but what about all of those families that don't have that?'"

The union tweeted a video it said showed staff "desperately trying to dispatch ambulances" to call-outs.

Ms Watkins said the pressure peaked at 7:45pm, but that it had scarcely abated several hours later.

"Until midnight there were still 35 cases waiting. A few of those priority cases waited five hours, there was one that was waiting seven hours," Ms Watkins said.

"It was classified as … a life-threatening case that we should have been there for in 16 minutes."

The South Australian Ambulance Service (SAAS) has been contacted for comment.

Ms Watkins said she had taken the drastic step of writing to the coroner, because "things are so bad that it's in all likelihood now that we're going to see avoidable deaths in the community".

She said patients who called for assistance, but were deemed lower priority, were not attended to at all.

"The decision was made by SAAS that they were just going to call these people back and tell them an ambulance would not be coming, that they would have to find their own alternative," she said.

"Elderly people who have fallen or broken a bone, they're deemed as not life-threatening so last night they wouldn't have even received an ambulance."

The union said COVID had depleted ambulance staffing at a time when Omicron cases were putting huge strain on the health system as a whole.

A total of 26 COVID deaths have been reported in SA in the 52 days since borders reopened in November — significantly more than the 13 over 300 days that was forecast ahead of the state's COVID-Ready roadmap.

Earlier this week, paramedics took almost an hour to arrive to treat a severely scalded three-year-old boy during high demand for ambulances.

Premier Steven Marshall apologised for the 51-minute wait.

Tas hospital cuts services amid COVID-19.Elective surgery and other services at a hospital in northwest Tasmania are being reduced due to staff shortages caused by COVID-19.More than 90 staff at the Northwest Regional Hospital in Burnie are unable to work having either caught the virus or being forced to isolate as a close contact.
Health Department deputy secretary Dale Webster said the hospital is implementing strategies to increase workforce capacity, including asking staff to reconsider taking leave.

"Outpatient and elective surgery activity will be reduced, with outpatient services for urgent and category one patients to be moved to telehealth over coming days," he told reporters on Friday.

"These measures have been introduced as part of our preparations for a likely increase in COVID-19 cases in the community."

Mr Webster said 188 healthcare workers across the state had the virus but there was no evidence of transmission within hospitals.

Tasmania reported 1201 new cases on Friday. The state's daily figure has been in the low-to-mid 1000s since a record 2223 infections on January 7.

Twenty-four people are in hospital, with 10 being treated specifically for virus symptoms. None are in intensive care.

The other 14 people in hospital have unrelated medical conditions.

NT COVID-19 update
14 January 2022
There were 546 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the Northern Territory until 8pm on 13 January 2022. Of these, 296 were positive cases from a Rapid Antigen Test.
This takes the number of active cases in the NT to approximately 3,300 .
There are currently 27 patients in hospital, with 20 classified as acute hospital admissions, including one patient in ICU.
1,689 COVID-19 PCR tests were processed across the NT yesterday.

Lockout extended for Yuendumu and Yuelamu
The lockout for Yuendumu and Yuelamu which was due to end tomorrow has been extended for a further five days until midday, Thursday 20 January 2022.
There are now a total of 43 cases from Yuendumu and Yuelamu. All cases and identified close contacts are in isolation, and further contact tracing is underway. NT Health teams are working to undertake testing across the community and provide the COVID-19 vaccination.

Public health measures
To slow the spread of COVID-19 in the community and reduce the rate of transmission, the following public health measures are in place across the NT:
• The Territory Vaccine Pass requires all people in the Northern Territory to show proof of their vaccination status to attend a range of businesses, venues, places and events
• A Territory-wide indoor mask mandate
• A lockout in Yuendumu, Yuelamu and Amoonguna.

Children who are close contacts
Changes have been made to the Chief Health Office Directions in relation to children who are close contacts.
Children who are close contacts undertaking isolation, may leave isolation to attend childcare, pre-school or school if they:
• Have no symptoms of COVID-19
• The child has a daily Rapid Antigen Test before entering childcare, pre-school or school.
Children under the age of 18 are considered vaccinated for the purposes of isolation as close contact and will need to isolate for seven days.
Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever (temperature 37.5C or higher), chills or night sweat, cough, sore throat, tiredness, difficulty breathing, headache, muscle pain (myalgia), loss of smell, distortion of sense of taste (dysgeusia), nausea and vomiting, joint pain, loss of appetite or a runny nose and acute blocked nose (congestion).
COVID-19 testing
Everyone should get tested for COVID-19 if showing symptoms. A number of NT Rapid Antigen Testing and Distribution Points have been established. Individuals can collect RATs for free from NT distribution centres located in Darwin, Katherine, Nhulunbuy, Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.
It is critical all people check-in using The Territory Check In App everywhere, every time, no matter how long you are there for.

PCRs remain restricted in who can access them to test for covid.
RATs remain very hard to get hold of , further reducing the reliability of reported known VOC cases in all states with the exceptions of WA and NT where case loads are VOC case numbers remain low.

National kiddie vax rollout started today and has already hit huge snags , childrens' doses are not arriving at GP Vax Clinics except in dribs and drabs and many thousand of child vaxx appointments have had to be rescheduled.

WNSW
Confirmed cases remain high but it's likely there are more undiagnosed cases. Regardless of the confirmed number in your town, plan and practice your COVID-safety measures.
From 12 January, you can report your positive Rapid Antigen Test via the Service NSW app. If you don't have access to the app, you can report results on the Service NSW website or call Service NSW on 13 77 88. Do not attend a service centre.
Get your vaccinations. Wear a mask indoors. Wash and sanitise your hands frequently. Practice physical distancing and avoid crowds or gatherings where you are aren't able to. Use QR codes. Be particularly careful around older people, or people with health conditions.
Plan ahead - have a plan ready for if you, or someone in your household, needs to self-isolate with COVID-19, or while waiting for test results.
RAT results for each District is currently not available.

Queensland has suffered its deadliest day of the pandemic as the state prepares to scrap all domestic border controls.

Six people died from COVID-19 and 14,914 new virus cases were recorded after 33,849 tests in the 24 hours to 6.30am on Thursday.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk described the rise in the number of deaths from the pandemic to 17 as "quite upsetting".
"Can I please express my deepest sympathies to the families of the loved ones that have passed away," she said.
"These are people's grandparents, brothers, sisters, uncles, and this will be a very difficult time for families at the moment."

Chief Health Officer John Gerrard said the dead were in their 70s, 80s and 90s and five were double-vaccinated, but all six had "significant underlying medical conditions".

COVID-19 update 15 January 2022
Exposure sites will continue to be updated on the HealthyWA website. People are encouraged to check this site regularly.
WA Health has reported 2 new local COVID-19 cases and 7 travel-related cases to 8pm last night.

One of the new local cases is a woman linked to previously reported cases. It is believed this case was infectious in the community and potential exposure sites will soon be added to the HealthyWA website. The woman is in self-quarantine. Her known close contacts have been tested and are in quarantine.
The other local case, also a woman, is a close contact of a previously reported case. Both are in self-quarantine. It is believed this case was infectious in the community and contact tracers are working to identify potential exposure sites. Some exposure sites have now been added to the HealthyWA website.

6 of the new reported cases acquired the virus interstate and 1 case is related to an overseas traveller. All are in quarantine.

Testing advice
Anyone who has visited any of the exposure sites in Bentley, Bull Creek, Cannington, Jandakot, St Jamesvand Success should recheck the HealthyWA website as advice has been updated for several sites.
The public health advice also extends to anyone in the City of Cockburn or broader Perth metropolitan area experiencing symptoms to get tested and isolate until they receive a negative result.

Yesterday, 1,941,432 scans were recorded on the SafeWA app.

Other information
There are currently 120 confirmed active cases in WA. Of these, 40 are in hotel quarantine and 80 are in self-quarantine.
Today’s nine new cases bring the State’s total number of COVID-19 cases to 1294.
Using the SafeWA app will help authorities contact those who may be at risk quickly and effectively.
So far in WA, 1,165 people have recovered from the virus.

Tasmania has recorded 1,139 new cases of COVID-19 and 22 hospitalisations, with one person receiving intensive care — the first since the state reopened its borders a month ago.

The state government says 10 people are being treated specifically for COVID-related symptoms, and 12 are being treated for unrelated medical conditions.

Of the new cases, 884 were diagnosed through rapid tests, while 255 cases were detected via PCR tests.

There are currently 7,108 active cases of COVID-19 in the state, and 1,470 people have been released from isolation in the last 24 hours.

From today, Tasmanians needing a free rapid antigen test must request a kit through Public Health before collecting them at designated hubs across the state.

The state's healthcare system is also grappling with the continued rise in COVID cases.

The North West Regional Hospital in Burnie has moved to escalation level 3, with 90 staff in isolation after testing positive to COVID-19 or being deemed a close contact of a positive case.

The escalation will see a reduction in outpatient services and elective surgeries and follows similar escalations at the Royal Hobart Hospital and Launceston General Hospital.

It comes as Hobart prepares to host the second day of the fifth mens Ashes Test at Bellerive Oval this afternoon.

NT LOCAL DAILY CASES

NT COVID-19 update
15 January 2022
The Northern Territory is today reporting the death of a woman in her 40s with COVID-19. .The woman is from Darwin and had pre-existing medical conditions. She was vaccinated.
The Northern Territory has recorded its second COVID-related death, after an Aboriginal woman in her 40s died in Royal Darwin Hospital.
NT Deputy Chief Minister Nicole Manison said the woman was from Darwin's Bagot community.

This is the second death associated with COVID-19 in the Northern Territory.

There were 412 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the Northern Territory in the 24 hours to 8pm on 14 January 2022. Of these, 134 were positive cases from a Rapid Antigen Test.

This takes the number of active cases in the NT to approximately 3,750.

2 new cases have been reported in Yuendumu, bringing the total number to 45. All cases and identified close contacts are in isolation. Further contact tracing is underway.

There are a total of 20 cases at the Alice Springs Correctional Facility, including 14 inmates reported today and six staff that were reported previously.

There are currently 32 patients in hospital, with 18 classified as acute hospital admissions. There are no patients in ICU.
2,230 COVID-19 PCR tests were processed across the NT yesterday.

DELTA has spread to a second Northern Territory aged care centre, with cases detected in Darwin's Regis Tiwi and Alice Springs' Old Timers Village. There are concerns about the spread of coronavirus in the Northern Territory's aged care sector after a second nursing home recorded cases this week, including one in a resident.

The operator of the Regis Tiwi aged care home in Darwin's northern suburbs yesterday confirmed that one resident and two employees at the facility tested positive to COVID-19.

Speaking about the results, the home's operator, Regis Aged Care, said an "outbreak management plan" has been implemented, which included "infection prevention and control measures" and zoning of the home.

"Regis has invested heavily in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and more recently rapid antigen tests (RATs) to ensure our employees are provided with appropriate safety equipment," a Regis spokesperson said.

"None of our employees [has] been furloughed during this outbreak due to the added protection of the N95 face masks and face shields.

"All of our employees are provided with a RAT at the commencement of each shift."

Regis Aged Care said almost half of its residents have received a booster dose, with more expected to get their shots during a booster clinic scheduled this month.

Yesterday, the Northern Territory government confirmed that an outbreak at the Old Timers Aged Care Service in Alice Springs had grown to 11, after the first cases were detected there earlier this week.

Chief Health Officer Hugh Heggie said that COVID-positive residents at Old Timers had been separated from others.

"There's been no need to move the residents from the facility," Dr Heggie said.

The Australian Regional and Remote Community Services (ARRCS) — which operates Old Timers — said it was "managing a number of staff and resident exposures" at the home.

"We are implementing our pandemic management plans in close consultation with Northern Territory Health and federal government departments to manage the risks for our staff, residents and their families," ARRCS said in a statement.

The federal government's Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (ACQSC) confirmed infection control spot checks had taken place at both Old Timers and Regis Tiwi.

The commission noted that services that were unprepared for an outbreak could be subject to regulatory action.

"Compliance enforcement decisions have been taken in relation to a number of services that have been slow to respond, or responded poorly to a COVID-19 outbreak," an ACQSC spokesperson said.

Notification issues, staff shortages among concerns for peak bodies
With staff shortages and outbreaks at hundreds of aged care homes across Australia, advocates have raised concerns about whether the NT's aged care sector can handle a surge in COVID-19 cases.

Council on the Ageing (COTA) NT chief executive Sue Shearer said she had been contacted by concerned relatives of residents at Old Timers after the first cases were detected at the facility earlier this week.

"We had people from Alice Springs calling us because relatives hadn't been advised at all and are really distressed," Ms Shearer said.

"We ask these particular aged care places to notify their relatives as soon as possible.

"We could lose a whole generation here … it's really important that we look after [them]."

The peak body for not-for-profit aged care providers, Aged and Community Services Australia (ACSA), said it expected Northern Territory nursing homes would face significant staff shortages as the Omicron variant spread.

"We're hearing reports of staff shortages of anywhere between 5 per cent and 50 per cent in Sydney because [staff have] either contracted COVID or they've been a close contact," ACSA chief executive Paul Sadler said.

"So far in the Northern Territory, the community transmission has not quite been at the same level as it has been in the eastern and southern states.

"The risk is with Omicron that it will continue to increase in the Territory and that we will see greater impact on staff."

Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner defended his government's management of COVID-19 in the Territory's nursing homes, saying any cases detected in aged care centres triggered an "immediate, aggressive contact tracing approach" by the Territory's Centre for Disease Control (CDC).

"If there is a case in aged care, there's already an authorising environment for you to do aggressive contact tracing — it doesn't need to be beefed up," he said.

PCRs remain restricted in who can access them to test for covid.
RATs remain very hard to get hold of , further reducing the reliability of reported known VOC cases in all states with the exceptions of WA and NT where case loads are VOC case numbers remain low.

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY NEW CASES & DEATHS OVERNIGHT

AUS + 63051 excluding NSW +ve RATs ==> 1596239 *

NSW + 34660 new cases ==> 695534 cases ! , 20 DEAD , ,+ve RATs are RECORDED IN NSW
VIC + 28128 ==> 590785 * , 13 DEAD , PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN VIC
QLD + 17445 ==> 212285 * , deaths in QLD = 3 DEAD , PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN QLD
WA + 5 (local) ==> 111 ! , PCR ONLY RECORDED IN WA
SA + 3450 ==> 664086 * , 2 DEAD . PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN SA
ACT + 1316 ==> 19996 * ., HIGHEST EVER 2 DEAD . PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN ACT
TAS + 825 ==> 17712 * , PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN TAS
NT + 367 (local) ==> 5303 ! , PCR ONLY RECORDED IN NT

NZ + 25 (LOCAL) ==> 11367 !, PCR ONLY RECORDED IN NZ , NO RESTRICTIONS ON PCR TESTING NZ <== ACCURATE CASE NUMBERS.

* not considered reliable numbers because in NSW +ve RATs are not being mandated to be reported and access to PCR tests is restricted ONLY to those ordered to be PCR tested and those who are symptomatic.
The concensas is the case numbers in ! are under-reporting actual case numbers to a significant degree , perhaps low by 2x fold or more.

Health experts are calling for a mandate for all RAT test results ( negative or positive ) to be reported and for free access to RATs for ALL Australians ON DEMAND.

\
Across NSW, 95.2 % of people aged 16 and over have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 93.8 % have received two doses to Friday 14 January.
Of people aged 12 to 15, 82.1 % have received a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 78.4 % have received two doses.
Of people aged 5 to 11, 11.5 % have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

NSW Health is today reporting the deaths of 20 people with COVID-19; 12 men and 8 women.

Of the 20 people who died; 14 people were vaccinated against COVID-19 and 6 people were not vaccinated.

Of the 18 people over the age of 65, 13 people were vaccinated and 5 were not vaccinated.
Older age is a significant risk factor for serious illness and death for COVID-19, particularly when combined with significant underlying health conditions. < THIS AGE COHORT were mostly allowed ONLY AZ as their vaccine and were denied the choice to get Pfizer or Moderna until September 2021 , this is A STRONG CONTRIBUTING FACTOR now Omicron is rampaging through NSW and has invaded residential aged care and disability facilities. >

The 2 people who were in their 50s had serious underlying health conditions. 1 person was vaccinated and other not vaccinated.

6 people were from south-western Sydney,
4 people were from western Sydney,
4 people were from Sydney's inner west,
2 people were from south eastern Sydney,
1 person was from the Northern Beaches,
1 person was from northern Sydney,
1 person was from the Wollongong area,
and 1 person was from the Tamworth area.

This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 868.

There are currently 2,650 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, including 191 people in intensive care, 61 of whom require ventilation.

There were 34,660 positive test results (cases) notified to 8pm last night – including 13,682 positive rapid antigen tests (RATs) and 20,978 positive PCR tests.

Of the 13,682 positive RAT results, 11,204 of these positive tests were from the previous 7 days. Please note there may be some cases included in these numbers where people have reported positive RATs on multiple days and/or where people have also had a positive PCR test during the same reporting period.

The 20,978 positive PCR results were returned from 122,747 PCR tests. 261 COVID-19 cases detected by PCR tests have been excluded following further investigation, bringing the total number of cases detected by PCR tests in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 638,242.

Of the 20,978 cases reported from PCR tests to 8pm last night,
4,063 are from South Western Sydney Local Health District (LHD),

HNE is reporting the death of a man in his 90s from the Tamworth area.

WNSW
Confirmed cases remain high but it's likely there are more undiagnosed cases. Regardless of the confirmed number in your town, plan and practice your COVID-safety measures.
⚠️ From 12 January, you can report your positive Rapid Antigen Test via the Service NSW app. If you don't have access to the app, you can report results on the Service NSW website or call Service NSW on 13 77 88. Do not attend a service centre.
⚠️ Get your vaccinations. Wear a mask indoors. Wash and sanitise your hands frequently. Practice physical distancing and avoid crowds or gatherings where you are aren't able to. Use QR codes. Be particularly careful around older people, or people with health conditions.
⚠️ Plan ahead - have a plan ready for if you, or someone in your household, needs to self-isolate with COVID-19, or while waiting for test results.
⚠️ RAT results for each District is currently not available.
Up to 8pm last night there were 439 new cases identified by PCR testing in the Western NSW Local Health District, in the following local government areas (LGA):

Queensland government is confident its regional quarantine facility can still be used for "an array of options".Finishing touches are being put on the centre at Wellcamp, west of Brisbane, which is set to open in the "coming weeks".

The 500-bed opening stage is almost complete with the administration and reception set to be completed while the rest of the 1000-bed centre is expected to be unveiled by April.

The federal government is building another 1000-bed quarantine camp in Pinkenba, near Brisbane airport, like similar centres in Melbourne and Perth.

However, the Queensland Opposition has questioned the value of the Wellcamp facility outside Toowoomba with quarantine requirements easing.

Domestic travellers have been able to enter from 1am on Saturday without showing proof of a negative COVID-19 test.

Fully jabbed international arrivals won't need to quarantine once the state hits the 90 per cent vaccination target, set to be reached in coming days.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles said there would still be a need for the quarantine facility."Clearly over time the usage of a facility like that is going to change as we have met our vaccination targets," he said.

"But there will continue to be a need for quarantine for some arrivals as well as other cohorts."

There have been a "wide variety of times" when Queensland has need such accommodation, Mr Miles said.

Chief health officer John Gerrard said the Wellcamp facility was as important as ever, and "very safe from an infection control point of view".

"If I am sick and I have a household member who has some immune disorder and I don't want to (home quarantine) that (Wellcamp) is a good place to put them," he said.

Wagner Corporation built the quarantine facility on its land at Wellcamp and have leased it to the Queensland government for at least one year.

While the arrangement is commercial-in-confidence, Mr Miles confirmed a 12-month lease from the Wagner Corporation with a further 12-month option.

"The lease arrangement represents good value when compared to the very significant costs that we've incurred renting out entire hotels for the best part of the last two years," he said.

COVID-19 update 16 January 2022
Exposure sites will continue to be updated on the HealthyWA website. People are urged to check this site regularly and follow the relevant health advice.

WA Health has reported 2 new local COVID-19 cases and 1 travel-related case to 8 pm last night.

The 2 new local cases, a male and a female, have been identified as contacts of previously reported cases. It is believed both cases were infectious in the community and contact tracers are working with these cases to determine potential exposure sites. These potential exposure sites will be added to the HealthyWA website as soon as they become available.

Both cases are now in self-quarantine. Their known close contacts are currently being investigated and will be directed to get tested and self-quarantine immediately.

The other local case is a returned interstate traveller in self-quarantine.

Testing advice
WA Health has released updated health advice for anyone who has visited any of the exposure sites in Bentley, Bull Creek, Cannington, Jandakot, St James and Success. People who visited the sites in these suburbs listed on the HealthyWA website should get tested immediately.

The public health advice also extends to anyone in the Perth and Peel regions experiencing symptoms. Anyone that feels unwell should get tested immediately and isolate until they receive a negative result.

A full list of testing clinics is available on HealthyWA website. Metropolitan public testing clinics are open until 8.00pm tonight.

SafeWA
Yesterday, 1,994,032 scans were recorded on the SafeWA app.

Other information
There are currently 112 confirmed active cases in WA. Of these, 34 are in hotel quarantine and 78 are in self-quarantine.

Today’s three new cases bring the State’s total number of COVID-19 cases to 1297.

Using the SafeWA app will help authorities contact those who may be at risk quickly and effectively.

So far in WA, 1,176 people have recovered from the virus.

Exposure sites
WA Health’s contact tracing team continues to identify a new range of exposure sites linked to new cases and it is likely exposure sites will be updated or added. Please continue to check exposure sites regularly, these are listed on the HealthyWA website.

WA Health has identified potential higher risk COVID-19 exposure in Applecross and Mount Lawley, and urgently requires people who visited these sites at the times to get tested immediately and self-quarantine.

Anyone who attended U Natural Spa Therapy in Applecross between 7 to 13 January is required to immediately get tested for COVID-19 and self-quarantine for 14 days from their last exposure, and call 13 COVID (13 26843).

This location has been visited by multiple COVID-19 cases and WA Health believes additional people have attended the business during this time, without registering their attendance or using the SafeWA app.

In addition to this location, anyone who attended New U Massage in Mount Lawley on Monday, 10 January between 10:00am and 8:30pm is also required to immediately get tested for COVID-19 and to self-quarantine for 14 days from their last exposure and call 13COVID (13 26843).

Testing clinics
1,329 Western Australians were swabbed at public clinics yesterday.

WA Health is expanding testing capacity, including operating hours of clinics. People are encouraged to check the HealthyWA website to find clinic locations and opening hours.

Private clinics are also available. Testing is available free of charge at private testing clinics for people who have been advised by WA Health to get tested, or who have been present at exposure sites at the times listed on the HealthyWA website.

Border controls
Information about Western Australia’s controlled border arrangements, conditions of entry and quarantine is available online.

COVID-19 vaccinations
Yesterday, 10,646 COVID-19 vaccinations were administered at state-run clinics. Testing figures for private clinics are not available on weekends.

Demand for vaccinations and third doses is increasing. To spread the demand across clinic operating hours and to avoid excessive wait times, people are encouraged to make a booking via Vaccinate WA.

Vaccinations are also available at GPs and pharmacies.

Anyone who received their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine four or more months ago can now book their booster dose and ensure they have maximum protection against the disease.

The Claremont COVID-19 vaccination clinic is now in the Jim Webster Pavilion at Claremont Showgrounds. Entry is still via Gate 8 off Ashton Avenue. The nearest train station is Loch Street. Onsite parking available is also available.

Appointments already booked will be automatically transferred.

A new fixed clinic at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre (PCEC) is expected to open in mid-January 2022. This replaces a pop-up vaccination clinic that opened at the PCEC on 26 December 2021.

For the latest WA vaccination figures, visit the COVID-19 Coronavirus: Vaccination dashboard (external site)**. For the latest Commonwealth data visit the Vaccination Numbers and Statistics website.

Mandatory vaccination information
A mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for most occupations and workforces in WA is being introduced in a phased approach. For more information on getting your COVID-19 vaccine, visit: Roll Up For WA

Variants
To date, 325 cases of variant strains have been detected in Western Australia – including 119 Omicron strain, 53 Alpha strain, 15 Beta strain, one Gamma strain and 137 Delta strain.

Masks back as five new cases recorded in WA.
Masks will be reintroduced in Perth and Peel from 6pm on Sunday after a surge in cases linked to a day spa in Applecross.

In an emergency press conference Premier Mark McGowan said there were 3 more cases that would be recorded in tomorrow’s numbers - 2 of which were linked to the U Natural Spa Therapy - in addition to the 2 announced earlier in the day.

It came just an hour after WA Health announced those 2 new local cases had been infectious while in the community.

Contact tracers are still working to determine potential exposure sites.

The man and woman are in self-quarantine and their close contacts are being directed to get tested and self-quarantine immediately.
The third case was linked to the Hyatt security guard and was not believed to be infectious in the community.

WA Health on Saturday issued an urgent warning to people who had been to the U Natural Spa Therapy between January 7 and 13.

It was considered a “significant exposure risk” and only 11 people had registered their attendance during that time frame, making tracing difficult.

The Applecross cluster has now grown to half a dozen local cases.

Mr McGowan said people should not hesitate or assume they are fine because they have no symptoms.
He said anyone who had been to the business needed to quarantine for 14 days from the date of exposure.
He said a worker at the massage centre had crossed paths with an interstate arrival and had then caught the virus.

Mr McGowan also said the New U massage parlour in Mount Lawley had also been added to the exposure list.
Anyone who visited between 10am and 8.30pm on January 10 must get tested and quarantine for two weeks.

Mr McGowan said Omicron was now in the community and called the development concerning.
People must mask-up in all indoor public venues in Perth and Peel.
Anyone who has been in Perth and Peel must also wear masks if they venture into other regions.“This one is concerning because it’s the Omicron variant and we want to make sure anyone who’s been to these businesses goes and gets tested,” Mr McGowan said.“We have to assume there are more cases of Omicron in our community.”

Mr McGowan said he did not know if the mask mandate would be in place until the border opening on February 5.
He also announced authorities were monitoring two ships off the WA coast that appear to have COVID onboard.

The British Chief is an oil and chemical tanker that is sailing near Port Hedland.
5 crew members from the UK vessel have returned positive rapid antigen tests.

The 2nd ship is the MV La Stella which is en-route to Fremantle with 6 positive crew members.

Mr McGowan said there were no seriously ill crew at this stage and authorities were planning on managing them onboard.
“We’ve been here before and we have many protocols in place of how to manage potentially positive crew,” he said.

NT COVID-19 update
16 January 2022
There were 327 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the Northern Territory in the 24 hours to 8pm on 15 January, 2022. Of these, 131 were positive cases from a Rapid Antigen Test.
This takes the number of active cases in the NT to approximately 4,000.

5 new cases have been reported in Yuendumu
6 cases in Yuelamu overnight.
5 new cases have also been reported in Amoonguna
and 3 at Abbott’s Camp in Alice Springs.
4 cases in Galiwin’ku
and 2 in Lajamanu.

All cases and identified close contacts are in isolation. Further contact tracing is underway.

There have been a number of new cases in correctional facilities across the Northern Territory including one inmate in Alice Springs, one staff member at the Barkly Work Camp and three inmates in Darwin. All of these facilities have activated their COVID management plans and are in constant communication with NT Health.

7 new cases have been reported in patients at the Alyerre Renal Hostel and 1 patient at the Topsy Smith Renal Hostel in Alice Springs.

1 new case has been reported at the Old Timers Aged Care Facility in Alice Springs.

There are currently 44 patients in hospital, with 13 classified as acute hospital admissions. There are no patients in ICU.

1,713 COVID-19 PCR tests were processed across the NT yesterday.

Alice Springs Lockout
Due to the high number of cases in the Alice Springs community including in high risk settings, a lockout will commence at 3pm today. The lockout will be in place for at least seven days, until 3pm on Sunday 23 January 2022.
In a lockout, those people who are fully vaccinated are able to live normally and access all services with proof of their vaccination status.
Those who are unvaccinated, including people who have received only their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, must stay at home for the lockout period and are only permitted to leave for the following reasons:
1. Medical treatment, including COVID testing or vaccination
2. For essential goods and services, like groceries, power tokens and medications
3. For one hour of outdoor exercise a day within 5 km of your home with one other person or people from your house
4. To provide care and support to a family member or person who cannot support themselves. In case of an emergency.

The lockout for Yuendumu, Yuelamu and Amoonguna has been extended until Sunday 23 January 2022.
Public health measures
To slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community and reduce the rate of transmission the following public health measures are in place across the NT:
• The Territory Vaccine Pass requires all people in the Northern Territory to show proof of their vaccination status to attend a range of businesses, venues, places and events
• A Territory-wide indoor mask mandate
• A lockout in Alice Springs, Yuendumu, Yuelamu and Amoonguna until 23 January.

To reduce the risk of COVID-19 spreading in our communities, it is important for everyone to follow all the health directions.
• Book your COVID-19 vaccine
• Check in using The Territory Check In App every time, everywhere
• If you have symptoms, stay away from others and get tested for COVID-19
• Wash your hands with soap and water and use hand sanitiser regularly
• Do not go to work if you feel sick
• Maintain a physical distance of 1.5 metres where possible.

AUS + 73813 new cases ==> 16731162 *

NSW + 29504 new cases ==> 715038 cases 17 DEAD , ,+ve RATs are RECORDED IN NSW
VIC +22429 ==> 590785 cases , 6 DEAD , PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN VIC *
QLD + 15122 ==> 227407 , all time high deaths in QLD = 7 DEAD , PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN QLD *
WA + 12 (local) ==> 123 , PCR ONLY RECORDED IN WA
SA + 3829 ==> 71020 cases * , PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN SA
ACT + 1601 ==> 21597 cases * ., HIGHEST EVER 2 DEAD . PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN ACT
TAS + 1037 ==> 18749 cases * , PCR & +RAT RECORDED IN TAS
NT + 284 (local) ==> 5914 ! , PCR ONLY RECORDED IN NT

NZ + 16 (LOCAL) ==> 11383 !, PCR ONLY RECORDED IN NZ , NO RESTRICTIONS ON PCR TESTING NZ <== ACCURATE CASE NUMBERS.

* not considered reliable numbers because in NSW -ve RATs are not being mandated to be reported and access to PCR tests is restricted ONLY to those ordered to be PCR tested and those who are symptomatic.

Up to 8pm last night there were 347 new cases identified by PCR testing in the Western NSW Local Health District, in the following local government areas (LGA):

The state recorded 22,429 virus cases and six deaths on Monday, a drop of almost 6000 cases from the previous day and about 12,000 fewer than the daily figure a week ago.
However, with one in three PCR tests coming back positive, Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said case numbers may not yet have peaked.

"There's a lot of uncertainty, but I do think we're reasonably close to a peak, if we're not at peak already," he told reporters on Monday.

"South Africa peaked in a reasonably short amount of time, the UK looks to have peaked, some states in the US - New York, New Jersey - look to be peaking with their case numbers.

"But we've got a high proportion of PCR tests coming back positive, so that does mean there are a lot of people out there who don't know their status."

With so many undetected COVID-19 cases in the state, Professor Sutton pleaded for people to continue to get tested and get a vaccine booster when eligible.

The number of patients in hospital with the virus has been growing daily, rising by 115 to a record 1229 patients on Monday. Intensive care figures are also rising, with 129 patients in ICU and 38 on ventilation.

Prof Sutton warned hospitalisation numbers will continue to rise, as he predicted a peak may not be reached for a month.

He said there was a "lag" of about two weeks between case numbers and hospital admissions, and three weeks for that to translate to ICU figures.

"That will peak sometime in February, maybe mid-February, but it's hard to know until we really see what the peak in case numbers is going to be," he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Premier James Merlino said COVID-related staffing absences were impacting every sector in Victoria.

"The challenge of staff absences will be really the issue of the first half of this year, as a result of the widespread impact of the Omicron variant," he said.

Asked if close contact isolation rules could be eased for more industries, including for pharmacy workers, he deferred to national cabinet.

Three million rapid antigen tests are being distributed to essential workers in health and aged care, disability and emergency sectors from Monday, the first to arrive from a bulk order of 44 million.

People with pre-existing health conditions and 60 community organisations will also be prioritised.

Prof Sutton flagged another five million RATs would arrive in the state "very soon".

The opposition welcomed the additional tests, but criticised the Andrews government for its lack of planning.

"The state government was told home testing would be available November 1, yet they did nothing to prepare and manage the COVID response," Opposition health spokeswoman Georgie Crozier said.

QLD LOCAL DAILY CASES

Queensland today recorded 15,122 new COVID-19 cases and a further seven deaths, making it the state's deadliest day of the pandemic.

Of the 7 fatalities, 2 were aged in their 80s and 5 were aged in their 90s - none had received a booster dose of a vaccine.
All had underlying health conditions.

he latest case figures released today come from 30,963 PCR tests and 4576 reported rapid antigen tests.

Queensland has also updated its definition of an active case to bring it in line with other states and territories, lowering its overall total to 86,953.

Health Minister Yvette D'Ath said 702 coronavirus patients were requiring hospital care, with 40 in ICU and 15 on ventilation.

Ms D'Ath said the number was a major rise compared with yesterday's 649 as she appealed for people to get their booster shots.

"So quite a jump, 50 additional people in hospitals, in our public hospitals, in the past 24 hours," Ms D'Ath said.

"Thankfully, we don't see the corresponding increase in ICU, but we want the least amount of people needing to be hospitalised, and it comes down to getting your vaccination and your booster shot."

Chief Health Officer John Gerrard today provided new statistical evidence to highlight the risk of hospitalisation for unvaccinated people.

"Our statisticians have been busy at work looking at the intensive care units, and what they have found is if you are unvaccinated in Queensland, you are 24 times more likely to be admitted to a Queensland intensive care unit than someone who was triple vaxxed.

"I will say that extraordinary statistic again. If you are unvaccinated, in Queensland, you are 24 times more likely to end up in an intensive care unit than someone who was triple vaccinated.

Dr Gerrard said that almost 1 million Queenslanders have received a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Major school outbreaks expected
Dr Gerrard admitted there will be "significant" coronavirus outbreaks when Queensland school reopen next month.

The state's school reopening has been pushed back two weeks to Monday, February 7.

But Dr Gerrard said while he expected large numbers of students to be infected, the overwhelming symptoms would be mild for them.

Education Minister Grace Grace also said the planned extra week to the school year would not be needed after talks with education stakeholders.

"I am satisfied that the full curriculum can now be delivered in the condensed semester. That is over the next two terms.

"This means that the proposed extra week at the end of the school year will not be required."

UNVAXXED COPS FACE THE SACK
Almost a thousand police staff are off work because they have contracted COVID-19 or are close contacts, Queensland's Deputy Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski says.

The numbers come just days after the Queensland border was removed, in a bid to free up police officers and bring them back to the frontline, after more than 400 days on the state line.

Mr Gollschewski told ABC Radio the latest figures indicated that 967 members of the Queensland Police Service were in isolation, while 347 police officers were confirmed to have contracted COVID-19.

"I don't have the aggregated number but it would be well up over 500 officers by now and probably about 800 to 900 members all up," he said.

"We've been very fortunate we haven't had anyone seriously ill."

COVID19 update 17 January 2022
Exposure sites continue to be updated on the HealthyWA website. People are urged to check this site regularly and follow the relevant health advice.
WA Health has reported 3 local COVID-19 cases and 9 [INTERSTATE] travel-related cases to 8pm last night.

The 3 local cases are the same cases announced yesterday afternoon, two are linked to the Cockburn cluster and the third is a known close contact of a previously reported case.
1 of 3 local cases was not in quarantine for their entire infectious period. Contact tracers are working with this case to determine potential exposure sites. Some sites have already been added to the HealthyWA website. As more potential exposure sites are confirmed these will be added to the HealthyWA website as soon as they become available.
All cases are now in self-quarantine. Their known close contacts are currently being investigated and will be directed to get tested and self-quarantine immediately.
The other 9 cases relate to returned interstate travellers and are in self-quarantine.

Vessels
WA Health is closely monitoring two vessels off the WA coast, both reporting probable COVID cases on board through returned positive Rapid Antigen Tests.
All positive crew members on board these vessels are isolating in their cabins and being monitored safely.

Testing advice
People are urged to continue to check the exposure sites page of the HealthyWA website for updates, and if they have been to an exposure site to follow the listed health advice.
Anyone in the Perth and Peel regions experiencing symptoms should get tested immediately and isolate until they receive a negative result.
A full list of testing clinics is available on HealthyWA website. Metropolitan public testing clinics are open until 10.00pm tonight.

SafeWA
Yesterday, 1,486,050 scans were recorded on the SafeWA app. This represents a 24.5 per cent decrease in usage from the previous day. It is increasingly important for everyone to check in when they visit businesses in WA.
Other information

There are currently 106 confirmed active cases in WA. Of these, 33 are in hotel quarantine, 72 are in self-quarantine and one is in hospital but not in ICU.

Today’s 12 new cases bring the State’s total number of COVID-19 cases to 1309.
1,203 people have recovered from the virus.
Using the SafeWA app will help authorities contact those who may be at risk quickly and effectively.
Exposure sites
WA Health’s contact tracing team continues to identify a new range of exposure sites linked to new cases and it is likely exposure sites will be updated or added. Please continue to check exposure sites regularly, these are listed on the HealthyWA website.
WA Health has identified potential higher risk COVID-19 exposure in Osborne Park, Applecross and Mount Lawley, and urgently requires people who visited these sites at the times listed to get tested immediately and self-quarantine.
These higher risk COVID-19 exposure sites include Comfort Massage in Osborne Park, U Natural Spa Therapy in Applecross and New U Massage in Mount Lawley.
These location has been visited by multiple COVID-19 cases and WA Health believes additional people have attended the businesses during this time, without registering their attendance or using the SafeWA app.

Testing clinics
3,728 Western Australians were swabbed at clinics yesterday.

COVID-19 vaccination clinics administered 35,153 vaccines in WA across the weekend.

Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
