is wiring to an extension cord safe?

I've consulted both an electrical engineer (my brother) and a general contractor (my uncle), both have said that this is perfectly fine, as you are not wiring a permanent fixture. If you wire it properly with three wires (live, neg, and ground) you will not run the risk of fire, the only risk is the unit itself malfunctioning, in which case it would even if it were 'permanently' wired.
