I see so many thread. I was going to ask my questions on someone else's thread, but I didn't want to interfere with what their concerns were.
I'd like to start a colony (as soon as I can save the money up to buy some. Money is extremely tight ATM.). I'm researching how to breed them. I have many questions, if I may ...
1.) Container: I saw people used Rubber Maid containers (or similar), with a screen in the top for ventilation.
* What's the proper size to start with, to the ration of bubia roaches?
3.) Temperature: I had read they have to be kept at 80-90 degrees? Is this correct?
4.) Heat: I've seen some say to use a CHE lamp to keep them warm.
*Do I need to use a lamp? I have one for our beardie, but they make me nervous. *Can I use a reptile heating pad, instead? I did a quick search, and they seem to be less expensive. *If I do that, should I place the pad in the container, or the container on top of it? *If I put the heating pad inside of the container, should I put anything on top of the heating pad?
5.) *How may females and males do I need to get started? *How long does it take? *What is the lifecycle of the dubia roaches (time frame).
6.) Water: Use the gels that are used for plants (without fertilizer, of course).
7.) Nutrition: The breeders can be fed cat food (I saw that dog food doesn't have as much protein?) and some vegetable matter (are some better then others? Are there any that should not be fed?). The feeders should be fed more vegetable (should I give them cat food, also? Again, are there some vegetables that are better, or any they should not be fed?).
8.) Bedding: I saw some use paper towels, and some use dirt. Is there a preferrence?
I know to give them egg cartons, paper towel roads, etc.
*** Last but not least.... HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE DUBIA??? LOL!!!!!!!!
Is it:
1.) Doo-bye-ah
2.) Doo-bee-ah
3.) or something else?
That last one is making me nuts! LOL!
Thanks much
