I see so many thread. I was going to ask my questions on someone else's thread, but I didn't want to interfere with what their concerns were.

I'd like to start a colony (as soon as I can save the money up to buy some. Money is extremely tight ATM.). I'm researching how to breed them. I have many questions, if I may :) ...

1.) Container: I saw people used Rubber Maid containers (or similar), with a screen in the top for ventilation.
* What's the proper size to start with, to the ration of bubia roaches?
3.) Temperature: I had read they have to be kept at 80-90 degrees? Is this correct?
4.) Heat: I've seen some say to use a CHE lamp to keep them warm.
*Do I need to use a lamp? I have one for our beardie, but they make me nervous. *Can I use a reptile heating pad, instead? I did a quick search, and they seem to be less expensive. *If I do that, should I place the pad in the container, or the container on top of it? *If I put the heating pad inside of the container, should I put anything on top of the heating pad?
5.) *How may females and males do I need to get started? *How long does it take? *What is the lifecycle of the dubia roaches (time frame).
6.) Water: Use the gels that are used for plants (without fertilizer, of course).
7.) Nutrition: The breeders can be fed cat food (I saw that dog food doesn't have as much protein?) and some vegetable matter (are some better then others? Are there any that should not be fed?). The feeders should be fed more vegetable (should I give them cat food, also? Again, are there some vegetables that are better, or any they should not be fed?).
8.) Bedding: I saw some use paper towels, and some use dirt. Is there a preferrence?

I know to give them egg cartons, paper towel roads, etc.

*** Last but not least.... HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE DUBIA??? LOL!!!!!!!!
Is it:
1.) Doo-bye-ah
2.) Doo-bee-ah
3.) or something else?

That last one is making me nuts! LOL!

Thanks much :)

I have a dubia colony for sale on hoobly, pretty cheap compared to what others sell.

http://www.hoobly.com/3AWXR/cheap-dubia-colony.htm

It says 10 adult female, but I know how it is to be just starting a colony so I'll give you an extra 5 adult female and 100 extra nymphs :) so 15 female 250 nymphs :D

pm me if your interested :D

1.) I'm not sure about size but I have 36 female 11 males and around 500 nymphs in a 7x12 container

2.) there is no two

3.) they have to be kept at 80-95 degrees if you want them to breed :D

4.) I use a human heating pad on the outside under my bin, works great, just make sure you don't get one with auto-off though cuz it's a pain in the butt to have to keep checking on it to make sure it didn't shut off

5.) usually ten females and 5 males will do the trick to start your colony... I have heard ratios of 3::1 or 5::1 so I'm not sure, also it takes a couple weeks for them to set in and start breeding.... I'm not sure if this is right but I heard dubia roaches live for 12 - 15 months long in there adult stage.

6.) yes :) lol

7.) I'm not sure about this one, I'm actually in the process of researching this myself

8.) I wouldn't use bedding, it's not necessary and it makes cleaning there bin more of a pain in the butt.

Haha that's a good question, I've been prounoncing it duh-bye-ah, I'm pretty sure its doo-bee-ah now after I just google searched it  I'm stilling Gunna say it my way though it sounds cooler

I hope helped :D

Thanks for replying, Steph!

LOL. My bad (#2) Ooops

Oh, so they don't need any bedding to lay their eggs?

LOL. I googled and musn't have googled well. I could not get an answer on how to pronounce them. Thanks for letting me know! That was making me nuts. I thought I could find out at one petshop, one person pronounced them one way, and another another way. LOL.

Do you happen to know how long it will take for them to breed, and what their growth rate is? Trying to figure out how long it will take to get a colony going enough to feed them.

Thanks for the special! Very much apprecited! I'm going to ask my hubby about it, as we just spent a lot of money at the vet this past week for our kitty cats. I'll let ya know after I talk with him (he's asleep right now, which is what I should be doing because I can barely see this screen ATM. LOL.)

Thanks!

No they do not need bedding, they are live bearers, the male inserts a sperm packet into the female, (once this has happend the female can not mate again until she bears the nymphs), then once the female is pregnant she expels the egg sack (ootheca) and once its almost fully expelled she pulls it back inside of her, then it sits in her ooth sack (the abdomen) where the ootheca incubates for a month till the nymphs start to hatch and at that point she expels the ootheca and the nymphs (20-40) crawl the rest of the way out of it...... wish i could obtain school subjects as well as i can obtain useless random facts lol

Does anyone know the growth rate / schedule? From what I'm gathering, they are born at approximately 1/8", and grow to be full size adults (1.5" to 2") at 4 to 6 months? So, if I were to assume they were growing in fairly equal increments, then the rate would be approx. 3/8" per month? So, theoretically, at one month they’d be approximately 1/2”?

I’ve searched for some sort of growth rate chart, but couldn’t find one.

Okay, my replies :)

LOL. Well, you absorb what you enjoy :) If only schools learned to teach in ways that were applicable to their students and interested them :) But, let me not go off on that tangent :) I've been a long time advocate of that sort of thing :) Home taught my son :)

Interesting, actually, IMO. Thanks for the info :)

Awesome article! Thank you Erok000! I have questions from it :) I’m going to read the comments and I’ll ask some questions when I get through it.

Oh dear! From what I’m gathering, in order for me to get a proper colony started, I need 105 female roaches. I’ll have to try to save up some more money. But, I can start with 50 or so for now, but I suppose it’d take that much more time to get the colony started, and I really need to get that started (to SAVE money – and to provide through our winter. We’re expecting a harsh winter, and I’m concerned about possible delivery delays and getting to the stores. Plus, from what I’m reading, once they get hooked on Dubia Roaches, they are not pleased with being given crickets.

I want to read more on the heating. I’m afraid of using a human heating pad, as I’m afraid of fire. I’m going to have to put this in on of our rooms (not looking forward to that. LOL). So, I’ll have to put wood down on top of carpet. I’m afraid of using another CHE light over that. Plus, we’ll be using a Rubbermaid-type bin. From what I’ve read, thus far, he doesn’t recommend the reptile heating pad for a Rubbermaid bin, and that’s what I’d planned (I thought it would be safer). Anyone have thoughts on that? From what I saw, so far, of the discussion, people were going back and forth on that.

I was considering putting it in our wash room, but that has flooded out at times, so that’s definitely NOT a safe idea!

Thanks for the reply, Lumpdog :) We may end up doing that, as we can't afford ATM to buy full grown to get it started. I was really hoping to make the transition to dubia by now :( But, we have some expenses right now and have to prioritize (don't get me wrong, prioritizing his food is important! He's eating healthy and has his crickets and offering of veggies. But we have vet expenses ATM.).

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
