how do i add friends ?

Do you mean under the User Control Panel (UCP), so you would see who's online?
If so, then access the UCP, then click on the "Friends&Foes" tab, then in the "Add new friends" box, enter the usernames of those you wish to add as a Friend and click on Submit.
