I don't think he is anywhere near close yet, he is currently in a 20 gallon tank, this is just a curiosity question. He is currently 12 inches 4-6 months old. Here is a pic of the little guy. He is growing so fast! I love it :D

He's a cutie and obviously given great care. I think he's definitely big enough to move to 40 gallon right now.

What is the point of keeping a younger beardie in a smaller tank? Is it just for feeding purposes? I never had a baby, but he was smaller than 12 inches when we got him. We always fed him in one of those under the bed containers, not his tank.

Thank you for your reply!

I would like just one or two more opinions before I switch him to a 20 gallon to a 40 gallon.

Thank you very much :)

This is my first beardie and by far my favorite pet ever, sorry ferrets :(

Pepper went straight into his 48x24x24 when I got him @3 months and 10". Never had the need/desire for a smaller cage.

40 gallon breeders aren't that big of cages - he shouldn't have a problem. If you add plenty of branches to climb on and places to feel hidden it can help him feel secure.

Great great, thank you both.

Does anyone have a picture/guide type thing for a good setup on a 40 gallon tank setup?

I'm sure there are some floating around. Hopefully someone can share theirs with you.

For A basic setup...
Ideally you want your UVB mounted overhead, to the same side as the basking light which should be a bright white bulb with a wide beam. The uvb should be the right length and mounted at the appropriate distance for the format - T8, T5 and MVB each have different requirments. I like to have enough branches/rocks that the dragon can have a choice of a few places to regulate heat/uvb. It's good to provide a shelter/hide or at least some area of privacy.

If you can tell us what equipment you have, or plan to get we can help you sort out how to set it up properly.

There is an article at the top of the Enclosures page that should help; probably more than one. Since lighting is the most important thing to regulate in the tank, I suggest Jess's article:" Lighting help for newbies."

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
