Heisenberg the dragon

Hi everyone, my name is Robinlynne I am a new mom to a bd named Heisenberg (we are big fans of breaking bad, RIP Walter White) my husband has always wanted a reptile but, I didn't so I would ignore him whenever he would bring it up.I finally gave in and agreed to get one.we did some research and decided to get A bearded dragon. I did a lot of online research and thought I knew how to take care of him. So on sept. 26th we brought Heisenberg home.

after getting him I found out we were doing some things wrong (mainly the lighting) we will rectify these problems immediately. I'd like to describe his set up n care so if I am doing anything else wrong someone can let me know. even though I didn't want him now he has a big spot in my heart and, I want to give him the best care that I can. also as a proud new mom I want to brag about my baby boy. I have pictures but don't know how to post them yet.

He is housed in a 36x18x18 terrarium. For substrate I'm using reptile carpet. he has a cave to hide in, a large branch under a basking bulb and, two vines to climb on. the cool side is about 89, the warm side about 97 and the basking area is around 115. The humidity is between 20 - 27%

The lighting is the area I made some mistakes with but, I am going to rectify the problems later this week. the lights are all on timers in attempt to replicate dawn, morning, noon, dusk and, night. I have two 125 watt MVB mounted about 9-10" above the tank. On each side of the tank I have a 75 watt basking bulb and red nocturnal bulb. Both set is about 4" above the tank. Above the front of the tank is a hood that holds four compact fluorescent 13 watt bulbs. I am going to exchange the hood for two 24" repti sun 10.0 tubes. I will also replace the red nocturnal bulbs with ceramic heating bulbs. I will replace all bulbs in 6 months.

From this site I have learned that the UVB bulbs should be mounted inside the tank, not above the screen. Personally I don't want to do this , mainly for aesthetics. However I think that with the two MVB and two UVB tubes that more than enough UVB and UVA is penetrating through the screen.

We got him from petsmart on Sept. 26th. He is now 13" long and is 130g (4.5oz) so we guess he is around 4 months old.

He gets a 15-20 min. Soak in the sink every day. Some times he will swim around but usually he just sits there or tries to get out. He is basically potty trained and will poop in the sink. However, if bath time is late he will go in his cage.

Heisenberg loves to cuddle with me every night. I wrap him in his blankie and snuggle him im my arm for 2-3 hours while I watch tv. He will bury his nose in his blankie and falls into a deep sleep. he sleeps so soundly that I can get up with him in my arms to get a drink or snack and he doesn't wake up. I put him back in his cage still swaddled in his blankie and he will sleep like that all night.

I didn't want him but now we have bonded and he has become part of our family. We don't have kids so, our pets are our children. He has 6 siblings; a dog, 2 cats and, 3 goldfish. All are very pampered and spoiled. When Heisenberg runs away from my husband and comes to me I tease my husband and say "Not the mama!". It's a line a baby dinosaur would say in a cartoon from the eighties.

As far as feeding goes he gets about 10-15 crickets a day that I dust with a calcium d3 powder. He mostly eats worms, about 7 a day that I spray with a multi vitamin. I breed my own silkworms, he also eats hornworms amd butterworms. I do not give him mealworms because they have an exoskeleton. I was giving him a freeze dried mix of mealworms crickets and grasshoppers about once a week that he would devour in no time at all. But the last time I gave it to him he didn't poop for 4 days, he usually poops once a day. I started to give him canned pumpkin and he finally had a bowel movement. I don't give him that mix anymore.

I now give him canned pumpkin every morning. He LOVES it, when he sees the container I keep it in he runs over to get it. I feed it to him on a spoon because if I put it in a bowl he makes a huge mess. He trusts me so much that he lets me wipe his face with a napkin. He also gets a salad every day that he picks at and, fruit occasionally. He loves banana but I know to only give it to him now and then. I also give him a moist food that is made by nature zone called baby bites.

Sorry this is so long and, I hope I haven't put too many people to sleep. I'm excited to meet many of you and I have enjoyed reading posts other people have posted. I look forward to read replies to my post.I'm happy to have found a place to talk about my new favorite subject; my sweet baby boy Heisenberg

I meant every word I said, it's a mistake that didn't have dire consequences, thank God, and now you know to zip up the reptarium. How many people have lost beardies to never find them again? You were one of the blessed ones that did fine your baby and because of Jim's quick thinking, he was warmed up and all is well. It was a mistake, that's all. We've all made mistakes, me included, but it all turned out well in the end & lesson learned. So that's how I feel, really & truly, and am so glad that Heisenberg is back home where he belongs. :D

Thank you Deb, that means a lot to me, you were right I was so focused on the negative and not the happy ending. Jack insisting we keep looking in that one spot, Jim going out for one more time and Jim thinking to use the oven for heat. I don't believe in divine intervention but if anyone has ever had a guardian angel then Jack was Heisenbergs'. When we get paid next week she is going to get some of those tail banger cookies she likes so much. Heisenberg is wrapped in his new blankie and tucked in his snuggie just like it should be.

I am so sorry for you but he is not dead, You are not a "Bad owner, Horrible mother to him" or anything near that and not at all stupid and neglectful i promise you that! I understand i felt that way about when my sisters t\leopard gecko i loved so much got out i thought my dog ate him so i feagurd he would not last a week till we found him but it has been weeks and my parents saw him run on the floor so he is still alive. After Deb passed i was thinking of what i did wrong and then on how much of a horrible owner i was but i had to think that all of them have to die one day even is it's really sad even if they die young. I know my parents always said it was not my fault that she passed, I knew i should believe them but i did'int because i followed the putting multiple beardies in a cage and i was getting told what i was doing wrong at that point but followed what my parents said. She died of a sickness i was pretty sure MBD because she showed allot of the sights of it. But one day i just made myself believe it was not my fault that she passed.

I'm so glad to hear Heisenberg made it home. Poor little bug. Unfortunately accidents happen and sometimes owners never see their beardies again. It was destined for you to be reunited. All's well that ends well as Shakespeare would say. :)

I'm soo glad you found him. I agree. We all make mistakes. We lost two beardies (both many years ago) The first one was Miss O she had an orange beard and was scared of school buses. One afternoon I was in the house and my husband was outside with her and Miss Y. Since they never roamed very much and we always could find where they went (they loved outside) he went around the corner of the house, just a few feet away, then the local school bus stopped to let the kids out at the end of the day and then backed up, we heard the backup beep and that's what scared her. The sound hit Bill a few seconds later and he went running back to where they were to find Miss O gone. We looked everywhere and couldn't find her. She came back to the front door, about 11 am the next day, hiding in some wild flowers just waiting for us to come out to get her. She knew we loved her and knew right where to come so we could find her.

The next one was a couple of years later where a beardie we'd gotten about 4 months earlier (sandstone) was there one minute and gone the next, we believe he/she was about 8 months old at the time. We never saw her again.

Holy moly! You must've been an absolute wreck! I'm SO glad hubby found him and he's safe at home now. And jack! Wow! Like Lassie coming to tell you that Timmy fell in the well! Such smart animals. We all do things we wish we didn't. I took Zilla to the soccer fields once while Tristan was learning to ride a bike. I had no idea how fast beardies could run!!! The only thing that kept him from disappearing forever was the ball net! Never again will I go outside without a harness. Woah.

So glad you got your baby back!!

He's definitely NOT impressed with being outside again, but hopefully that will go away as time goes by. Impressive beard, though :D

RobinLynn you have such a wonderful relationship with Heisenberg! I enjoyed reading about your growing bond and I LOVED your story pix of him with your cats! You should put these together n make a children's book that you can self publish!!! I have a book I would like to do the same with if my Therapy Dog Teddy about his visits.

What an ordeal you all went through too! As a mother of three children and 10 critters I know we all make mistakes unintentionally and usually based in good intentions. I have been there many times than I'd care to mention but with each incident we learn a little more and gain new insight on how to do things better next time. We are our worst critics and that is a good sign we can learn from our trials. Like others have said you should embrace the lesson and just love the dashing fellow! Your story gave the rest of us a good wake up call on just how fast they can be and just how much we love them, so THANK YOU for sharing that experience. Like another person said it was a Lassie Story with a dramatic and joyful ending! Hooray!!!

Thank you too for mentioning the cuddle sack and blanket I crafted for Heisenberg! You were great to work with and I had fun making it. Hope Dad appreciates all your effort to help him feel comfy sleeping with your baby boy in his home. I am so glad I found this website and enjoy reading your tales very much! Look forward to more adventures of Heisenberg!

Cheers, Monique

That picture you took of Heisenberg in full beard is worthy of the calendar that is put together every year, so keep that picture! And Monique said it all, we all make mistakes and learn from them. So true. I've already told you about the mistakes I've made over the years with my crew. Now we need a picture of the snugglie that Monique made for Heisenberg with him in it. Just to see what was made as I know he likes to be in it.

Since Heisenberg got out last week he hasn't been eating and even before that his appetite wasn't bwhat it use to be. I usually weigh him once a week but haven't in a while. I think the last time I weighed him was 3 weeks ago, he was 474g he is now 444g.
He has also been doing something strange with his mouth. He will yawn then lick several times.
Not sure if that is anything but will bring it up to the vet.The vet I'm taking him too has a very good reputation as an exotic vet, he better be for the price: $110 just to be seen, $65 for a stool sample. His appointment is tomorrow at 5pm, I will let you guys know how it goes.

I'm hoping he gets a good bill of health when you take him in. I'll be waiting to hear how the visit went. The opening & licking; I've always thought that meant they were thirsty and I've always given them water by syringe but they don't do it often, not like Heisenberg. Good luck!

Heisenberg went to the vets yesterday because he hasn't really been eating. The reason why the fecal eas so mych $$ was because it gets sent out to a lab so it can also be tested for giardia.

The vet felt the reason Heisenberg hasn't been eating is because the temp of his basking spot was too low. He wants it to be 105 - 110, so I have raised the temp. He gave him a shot of B12 to help boost his appetite. He said to make a mixture of all his food the consistency of baby food and mix it all with mushed up banana. He said that banana wasn't the best thing for jdragons because ot is so starchy but to use it for now because Heisenberg loves it so much that for now it will help entice Heisenberg to eat it. So this mixture should be 1/3 pellets 1/3 greens and 1/3 bugs or worms. He said to mince the greens real small so that Heisenberg will get all his greens not just the ones he likes. So all of this gets mixed in with the mashed up banana, which will eventually get replaced with Gatorade and blueberries or some other food that can be mushed up. I will probably try canned pumpkin. He also wants me to soak him with an even mixture of water and Gatorade once a day then rinse him off with water so he wont be sticky.

He noticed that Heisenberg was standing on his wrist and not his foot. He said that could be because he is weak or it could be a neurologic problem, we will see if it goes away after Heisenberg starts eating again. I wonder if it could be due to being out in the cold overnight last week which I forgot to mention, I speak to him Friday to get the fecal results so I will mention it

If Heisenberg doesn't start to get better then He will do blood work and x-rays. If the neurologiccal symptoms don't go away once he starts eating ahain then that will have to be addressed. I really hope it dosnt turn out to be neurologic, I don't think too much can be done for that. If something like that is wrong with Heisenberg I don't think I could handle that. I was so worried last night and couldn't sleep so if something really wrong with him I would be a mess.

A few other things he said was that right now it isn't apparent if Heisenberg is male or female
He said it should become evident in a few months and he told me what to look for. The other thing he said was that not to use reptile carpet as a substrate because it has fiber glass in it which would cause an impaction. He said fleece was fine so I will have pogismom (Monique) make me a tank liner for me.I already talked to her about it and she said she would give me a discount because I would be a returning client. I think that is very nice of her. I will have to post pics of the snuggie she made when I get a chance it came out very nice and Heisenberg seems to like it too.

I really liked this vet. He spent about 45 minutes with us when a normal appointment is 15 minutes. He was very friendly and attentive. It was also nice to chat with him, as some of you know I was a veterinary tech for 16 years but not with exotic pets. We both knew a lot of the same people, and it was nice to catch up on how people I knew are doing. Plus this vet. Os a very respected exotic pet veterinarian so I wouldn't take Heisenberg to anyone else.

So I will get the fecal results tomorrow then I will talk to him next week to let him know how Heisenberg is doing and we will see where to go from there. I just hope my sweet baby boy will be ok.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
